BEIJING, July 27 (Xinhua) -- The Supreme People's Court (SPC) of China on Tuesday urged courts across the country to accept scrutiny by the press and general public.The courts must constantly listen to the public so they can carry out their work in a better way, Shen Deyong, executive vice president of the SPC, told a national conference on the publicity work of courts.After hailing achievements of the courts in providing information to the public, Shen said some courts did not pay enough attention to public opinion."The public are paying more attention to court work, their expectations are growing. They want to know more, participate more and supervise more," he said.Shen urged courts to disclose information on major issues in a timely fashion, so as to avoid public suspicion and damage to judicial authority.The Supreme People's Court will train spokespeople and publicity officials of courts nationwide in the second half of the year.

BEIJING, July 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese spent less in June amid surging commodities prices and floods in many of the country's southern provinces, according to the latest reading of an index that gauges consumer confidence on Friday.The Bankcard Consumer Confidence Index (BCCI), compiled by the Xinhua News Agency and the national bank card association China UnionPay, slid to 86.30 in June, down 0.09 points from May.Compared with the same period last year, the June BCCI figure was 0.24 points higher. The index hit a record high of 86.89 in March.The reading in June indicated Chinese bank card spending was affected by surging commodities prices and the floods in southern China.Consumers also turned more conservative in spending due to sluggish performances of domestic stock markets and property markets in June.China's month-on-month economic growth rate is likely to have slowed in June given signs that electricity demand declined remarkably that month and the Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for China's manufacturing sector dipped 1.8 percentage points for two months in a run to 52.1 percent in June.Xinhua and UnionPay jointly started compiling the BCCI index in April 2009 based on bank card transaction data and analysis of structural changes in urban consumption. 

BEIJING, July 15 (Xinhua) -- At least 135 people had been confirmed dead and 41 are missing, as some of the worst flooding in years continues in south China.By 4 p.m. Thursday, close to 35.5 million people in 10 southern provinces and Chongqing Municipality had been affected by continuous rainstorms and floods since July 1, the Civil Affairs Ministry said in a notice on its website.About 113,000 homes were destroyed and more than 1.2 million people had been relocated, it said.Direct economic losses were estimated at about 26 billion yuan (3.8 billion U.S. dollars), up from Wednesday's 22.2 billion yuan.In Jiangxi Province alone, at least eight people have died since July 8, and direct economic losses have amounted to more than 2.9 billion yuan.The ministry had dispatched work groups to Jiangxi to direct relief work.The Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters announced earlier Thursday that floods had killed 594 people in 26 provinces since the beginning of the year. BEIJING, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- Urban residents who expect home prices to fall in first-tier Chinese cities in the second quarter outnumber those who anticipate further price hikes, according to a report by the China Economic Monitoring and Analysis Center released here Thursday.About 41 percent of those surveyed in the second quarter expected house prices to fall in popular first-tier cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen -- 18 percentage points higher than the proportion in the first quarter, according to the center which is under the National Bureau of Statistics.Meanwhile, only 36 percent of those surveyed in the second quarter anticipated house prices to continue to rise in those first-tier cities -- 24 basis points lower than the first quarter.In the second quarter, more people are expecting house prices to decline in cities at various levels, even as the proportions vary in different cities, according to the report.About 30 percent of consumers in provincial capital cities anticipated home prices to weaken in the second quarter, compared with 15 percent in the first quarter.In other small- and medium-sized cities, 28 percent of consumers surveyed foresaw house price falling in the future, up more than 11 basis points from the first quarter."The result show government measures to tighten the housing market since mid April have begun to have an effect on urban consumers' expectations," said Pan Jiancheng, deputy director of the China Economic Monitoring and Analysis Center.In spite of the rising proportions, the number of those who anticipated house price declines, however, still fell short of those who expected further price hikes in cities, except for consumers in the first-tier cities, according to the report.Housing prices in major Chinese cities rose 10.3 percent year on year in July, compared with 11.4 percent growth in June, according to NBS data released Tuesday.Property prices in 70 large and medium-sized cities grew 12.4 percent in May and 12.8 percent in April, the highest growth rate since July 2005 when the government started publishing the data.
