SAN DIEGO (KGTV and CNN) - Actor Will Ferrell is ‘grateful’ for well wishes received after a car crash on Interstate 5 in Orange County Thursday night."While traveling back to Los Angeles after hosting a voter registration event in San Diego, a car carrying Will Ferrell and three of his colleagues was struck on the freeway by another vehicle," read a statement Ferrell's representatives from United Talent Agency.Ferrell and another passenger were "unhurt" and were released from an Orange County hospital, according to UTA.RELATED: Will Ferrell rushed to hospital after crash on I-5Ferrell's longtime driver, Mark Thompson, and his another passenger, identified as Carolina Barlow, remain hospitalized in stable condition, the statement said.Ferrell is "staying close by as his friends are being treated, and has expressed his deep gratitude to the first responders who were immediately at the scene and to the hospital team that took such great care of them," the statement added.Ferrell, 50, was a passenger in an SUV that overturned during a two-car accident late Thursday at Alicia Parkway in Mission Viejo, according to an accident report from the California Highway Patrol.According to the accident report, Ferrell's vehicle was struck when another car veered into its lane. Ferrell's SUV then struck the center divider median and subsequently overturned.On Thursday night, Ferrell appeared at a Funny or Die event at Oceanside High School called Glam Up the Midterms. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A controversial retirement center proposed by Skyline Church is moving ahead following a San Diego Planning Commission vote Friday.Officials voted five to one in favor of advancing to the development to the next step.Church officials are looking to build the retirement center in the Valle De Oro neighborhood. It would be located on almost nine acres next to Skyline Church. The 232 units would be made up of independent and assistant living spaces. The facility would also have a walking trail, offices, a pool, and clinics.Those who are in support of this plan say it’s needed because of the growing aging community in the San Diego County. "This application is more than just a request. It’s asking the County’s permission to serve our community, by seeking your permission for this retirement center," said Pastor Dan Grant of Skyline Church.Opponents say this will cause traffic problems in an already congested location along I-94 just East of Via Mercado. They add, this would be a huge environmental impact on the area.Now that the Planning Commission has agreed to move forward, they will bring this recommendation to the Board of Supervisors. 1180

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Unemployment in San Diego County has dropped to 14.3%, but is likely to start increasing again due to modified public health orders, a report released Wednesday by the San Diego Association of Governments found.While unemployment has slowly but steadily declined from the high of 25% the week of May 9, county health orders on Tuesday closing bars, indoor dining at restaurants and indoor business at zoos, museums, movie theaters and other businesses will likely take a toll on the region."The recent rollbacks in opening could significantly impact the food and beverage industry," SANDAG Chief Economist Ray Major said. "Additionally, we could see another wave of layoffs as funding from Paycheck Protection Program loans is exhausted."Those industries told to shut down or modify business on Tuesday represent more than 160,000 jobs, or 11% of the region's pre-COVID-19 workforce.The unemployment rate before the pandemic was 3.1% and it could take many months for the economy to recover to that degree, the report said.The report also shows the geographical distribution of lost jobs and calculates unemployment rates for the five most impacted ZIP codes regionwide, including Encanto, College Area, City Heights, San Ysidro, and Logan Heights. Only Logan Heights is estimated to still have an unemployment rate above 20%. The five ZIP codes least affected, with unemployment rates just over 10%, are Carmel Valley, Del Mar, Rancho Santa Fe, Chula Vista NE, and Rancho Bernardo W."This data can help inform local leaders as they continue to plan our region's recovery," SANDAG Executive Director Hasan Ikhrata said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A bluff that overlooks Beacon’s Beach in Encinitas is on the brink of collapsing, which could mean changes for the walking trail that leads visitors down to the beach. The City of Encinitas says the bluff is at risk. There is a low-lying failure and the bluff could fall, taking the walking trail with it.“We’ve been told by our experts that there is a chance that the slide could happen at any time,”says Brenda Wisneski, Developmental Services Director for the City of Encinitas. Visitors at Beacon’s Beach say they feel the walking trail makes the beach different from others. “It’s one of my favorite beaches in all of San Diego. A part of that is because of the access, this trail is highly unique and it's not stairs,” says Mark Tayer. The city has a proposal to add a staircase south of the entry to the trail.“That is the most safe, the most secure. It requires a minimal amount of stability at the base of it,” says Wisneski.Wisneski says the city also has plans to move the parking lot back from the failure area. This could mean fewer parking spaces for visitors. The city hopes to begin construction in the fall of 2019. The proposal will go to the planning commission next. The trail will stay there until it poses a safety issue to visitors. On Wednesday, the City of Encinitas will have an open house where members of the community can voice their concerns.
