VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- If you are working from home, you may have bought some new items to accommodate the situation, or you are probably using more of the resources you already pay for.If you were planning on writing off these new expenses on your next tax return, "Unfortunately, there are no tax benefits to working from home if you are an employee,” Scott Rinehart, a tax professional and financial advisor with Carlson Financial, said. While tax season is months away, Rinehart said he has already received some questions from people."I've had people ask, 'since I work from home, can I deduct my office now?'” he explained.Say, for example, if you bought a laptop and it cost a couple hundred dollars, the rent on your apartment or certain utilities like electricity -- just to name a few examples -- you cannot write those off on your taxes.“The tax act a few years ago got rid of that tax break for employees,” Rinehart said.He mentioned an exception, however."If you are self-employed and now instead of going to your office, you're working from home, you can deduct a portion of your home you're using as your office."It is the same scenario for those homeschooling their children, Rinehart added, but he explained that extra paid leave was provided in the Family First Coronavirus Response Act for parents tending to their children.A tax write-off normally helps to reduce the amount of tax you owe."I think there will be folks who will try to claim these expenses when they itemize,” Rinehart said, “or add some sort of miscellaneous deduction, and they're just not going to be allowed."If you do make these claims or accidentally file for a write-off, Rinehart said, “You may get a letter from the IRS at some point saying, 'Hey, you owe us some money.’”In that event, Rinehart said the IRS will try to work with the filer to fix the issue. It may result in additional payments.Rinehart suggested tracking your expenses, organize receipts and use free tax resources online, as well as the IRS."Otherwise, it always makes sense to - if you have a more complex tax situation - have a professional look at it,” Rinehart said. This story originally reported by Julio Avila on wtkr.com. 2201
WASHINGTON (AP) — For the first time in Marine Corps history, women are attending a previously male-only combat training course in California.Marine Capt. Joshua Pena said 40 female Marine students checked-in Tuesday to the Marine Combat Training Battalion at Camp Pendleton. The move comes at least seven months after senior Marine leaders said they were considering the change, amid criticism that much of the early training excludes women. The entry-level course is for Marines who've finished boot camp and aren't assigned to infantry jobs. It lasts about a month and involves basic combat training, including patrol and convoy operations, marksmanship and the use of grenade launchers and machine guns.Pena said the female Marines will be fully integrated with the men, and that their inclusion triggered no changes to the course instruction. He said that eventually as many as 1,700 women would go through the combat training there each year.Currently Marine boot camp on the West Coast is only for male recruits. Women attend boot camp at Parris Island in South Carolina, where they are separated from the men for portions of the training. Congress members have been critical of that policy, and the Corps has been reviewing it.Until now, half of the Marine Corps' male recruits would go through their initial training on the West Coast where they had no female colleagues. A key reason for the limits is the shortage of female recruits. Women make up just 8.7 percent of the Corps. But Marine leaders have been eyeing changes with the belief that giving the men greater exposure to women recruits during training could foster better relations and greater respect over time. 1686
Voters are again set to render a verdict on the direction they would like to take the country. They turned out in record numbers for early voting, and polls open for Election Day have been steadily busy. Two years into Trump's tempestuous presidency, Democrats are targeting their best election results in six years. But given uncertainty over the quality of polling, questions over the makeup of the electorate and Trump's talent for busting political norms, no one can say for sure how the election will play out.Click here to see photos from around the country as people turned out to cast their ballots. 618

VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Jury selection is expected to take all week in the trial of former NFL tight end Kellen Winslow II. The San Diego football star and son of Chargers Hall of Famer Kellen Winslow Senior pleaded not guilty to charges that he raped two homeless women in Encinitas last year. He's also charged with raping an unconscious seventeen-year-old girl back when Winslow was nineteen. Prosecutors say he was out of custody on million bail in connection with the felony case when he got in trouble again. Prosecutors say he fondled himself in front of a 77- year-old woman at a Carlsbad gym, asked her if she liked it, and groped her while she was in a hot tub at the same gym.Jan Ronis is a San Diego defense attorney not affiliated with the case, but watching it closely. "From what I've seen at the preliminary examination, everyone that testified seemed to have a lot of credibility. These were older women, you would extend the greatest credibility to that kind of witness," said Ronis. Winslow played ten seasons with the NFL. His defense team is reportedly planning to call two psychiatrists to testify. It's unclear if CTE, or Chronic traumatic encephalopathy will play a role in that defense. Ronis says it might not make a difference. "You can still be responsible for your conduct , criminally responsible, after having sustained a traumatic brain injury or something of that nature. It's different than say, your mental health issue was such that rendered you incapable of understanding the nature of your conduct that you couldn't understand the difference between right and wrong, " said Ronis. Opening statements are expected to begin May 20. Winslow faces life in prison if convicted on all counts. City News Service contributed to this report. 1787
