NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (KGTV) - Some unexpected joy is arriving in the mail for residents of local senior care facilities, amid the ongoing restrictions on visitors.When the coronavirus pandemic forced visitor restrictions on nursing homes, Terri Martinson was conflicted. Her father is a resident at Parkview at Paradise Village in National City. She was happy the health of her father - Clyde Hasemeyer - was being protected, but she knows her dad."My dad is very social. He loves getting visitors, and telling jokes, playing games, singing and laughing. I was really concerned he wouldn't have any visitors," said Martinson.She and her family call often and write letters, but a few days ago, Clyde got a letter from someone he doesn't know. Clyde, a Koren War Marine Veteran, received a letter from 14-year-old Christian Hughes.10news caught up with Christian and his mother Mariana a few days ago as they began a letter-writing campaign for local senior care facilities. Their idea caught fire on social media. Hundreds of letters and cards have started to arrive at nursing homes, ending up in the hands and hearts of people like Clyde."My dad was so happy. He laughed and enjoyed it so much. He asked the caregiver to tape them up on his wall, so he could look at them all the time. Just makes him feel so nice not to be so isolated away from everyone," said Martinson.It's a feeling of not being alone during a time of staying apart. NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (KGTV) -- A National City family was shocked Monday when they showed up at their business and noticed someone broke-in and vandalized their business. Dulce Tablas' parents own Diva's Fashion 2 in National City, a store in which they sell formal clothing like ball gowns and tuxedos. The family also owns a banquet hall and a second clothing store. The family showed up to find their storefront window broken, glass all over the ground and a designer quincea?era dress, worth over 0, gone. The person who took the dress grabbed it from the mannequin. Tablas says it will cost the family over ,000 to fix the window. The family is wondering if they were targeted. Last week, during the Black Lives Matter protests, they decided to paint the phrase on their windows. After the break-in, Tablas said she noticed the phrase had an "X" through it. The break-in came on the same day the family decided to close down one of their locations, not able to survive during the COVID-19 pandemic. The business that was vandalized is the one staying open. The family also says they had insurance and surveillance cameras but they had cut the expense in April since they were closed due to the pandemic. NASHVILLE, Ind. — Officials with Brown County Schools are investigating an apparent racial incident where a Black student was referred to in a photo caption as "Black Guy" and not by his name.Apparent photos of the yearbook purporting to show the error that has been posted to social media indicate it was a photo of one of the school's basketball teams.Superintendent Dr. Laura Hammack and high school Principal Matthew Stark issued a letter dated Monday that called the incident "a truly reprehensible error.""We acknowledge that yearbook is the only class at this school where all assignments and homework are published for all to see," the statement reads. "We strive for perfection and hope any errors are minor and inconsequential. This is not an inconsequential error."The district has an ongoing investigation and consequences will be determined when the investigation is completed, according to the superintendent and principal's statement."Our district has been working to advance equity and inclusion for all protected classes; however, an occasion like this evidences the need for expanded response," the statement reads. "We are committed to ensuring that Brown County Schools provide a welcoming, safe, inclusive, and equitable school community. We remain relentless in our pursuit of the same."The letter said the district "is working collaboratively with the student's family to find ways to rectify the situation."The district also said in the letter that the error is a "clear violation of our nondiscrimination policy."Hammack also addressed the situation in a Facebook Live video on the Brown County Schools - Superintendent page.
