HAMPTON, Va. - Hampton University's Mo'ne Davis took the country by storm in 2014, becoming the first girl to pitch a shutout in Little League World Series history. That performance led to another historic moment when Davis became the first Litte Leaguer to be featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Due to the stardom Davis experienced after making headlines as a 13-year-old, there was a lot of excitement when she decided to play softball at Hampton. “I was like oh snap," Hampton outfielder/first baseman Brianna Anderson said. "I was like oh this is big.” “When everyone found out she was coming it was kind of a cool deal, you know,” Hampton head softball coach Angela Nicholson said.Although, the position that earned her fame more than five years ago is now in the past for Davis.In fact, she won't even pitch to her teammates during practice, even though they ask to hit off her "like every day," Nicholson said.As a 13-year-old baseball player, Davis was pitching as fast as 70 miles per hour, but now she utilizes that arm strength at middle infield.“I wanted to keep hitting so I was like I'm just gonna play an field position," Davis said. “Her transition and her glove work is phenomenal, and that’s where you see the baseball side of things,” Nicholson said.The transition, early on, was accompanied with some uncertainty by the Pirates. The team was unsure what to expect from someone who experienced stardom at such a young age.“I thought the kid was gonna be arrogant or cocky, but it was complete opposite," Nicholson said. "If you didn’t know who she was it would never come out. She doesn’t speak of it. She just wants to be a normal everyday person.” “From the moment she stepped on campus she’s worked harder than everybody," Hampton pitcher Emily Workman said. Ghost kitchens are starting to pop up around the country as new ways to get the same food from familiar restaurants. CEO Paul Damico has restaurants in six states. However, with his newest kitchen called Naf Naf, he’s trying something different. “It’s very unique to train your staff that they'll never see a customer,” he explains. “It's a very different business model.” The type of kitchens Damico is describing is what some call “ghost kitchens,” which are strictly a place to cook. There are no servers and no dining rooms. "I've been operating restaurants for 35 years and they're capital intensive, they’re high risk, and they take years to come out of the ground,” Damico says. “This is the complete opposite of that.”Jim Collins’s business Kitchen United houses several ghost kitchens. “This was a culinary school location originally, and the culinary school closed, and it was perfect for us, because it's a bunch of kitchens in a big building,” Collins says. The Kitchen United model helps to efficiently feed the demand of a growing number of people, especially millennials, who want to eat restaurant food but stay at home. "We're really at an intersection, a shift, in the way consumers are dining,” says Collins. “And because consumers are dining in a new way, the restaurant industry can serve consumers in new way.”The company operates locations in Chicago and Pasadena, but they’re expanding. Hundreds have been sickened with salmonella in recent weeks due to the presence of backyard poultry, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Thursday. According to CDC statistics, 227 have been sickened since May 16 by chickens and ducks being raised in backyard flocks. Overall, 279 people have reported salmonella illnesses this year from backyard poultry. The CDC says that many of those who reported an illness got their chicks or ducklings from agricultural stores, websites, and hatcheries. Nearly one-third of those sickened are younger than age 5. Of the 279 reported cases of salmonella, 40 have caused hospitalization. The CDC added that there has not been any reported fatalities. The CDC offers the following advice to the public: Always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water right after touching poultry or anything in their environment. Use hand sanitizer if soap and water are not immediately available.Do not let backyard poultry inside the house, including in bathrooms. Be especially careful to keep them out of areas where food or drink is prepared, served, or stored, such as kitchens and outdoor patios.Set aside a pair of shoes to wear while taking care of your birds and keep those outside of your home.Children younger than 5, adults over 65, and people who have health problems or take medicines that lower the body’s ability to fight germs and sickness shouldn’t handle or touch chicks, ducklings, or other poultry.Don’t eat or drink where poultry live or roam.Don’t kiss backyard poultry, or snuggle them and then touch your face or mouth.Stay outdoors when cleaning any equipment or materials used to raise or care for poultry, such as cages, or feed or water containers.The CDC says that salmonella symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps.
