A University of Florida research unit killed more than 150 birds over the past 10 years, the Gainesville Sun reported, citing U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service documents.The paper says that of the birds killed at the Plant Science Research and Education Unit, 47 were sandhill cranes and 105 were ring-billed gulls.While the Florida sandhill crane isn't considered endangered, it is a threatened species according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.Director of the unit, Jim Boyer, told the Sun the cranes and gulls had damaged or eaten crops grown for research, including high-value peanuts part of a breeding study.The unit says it has since decided to use non-lethal means to protect crops from cranes. 732

A new report card is out for dozens of fast-food restaurants, and overall, most failed when it comes to serving antibiotic-free beef.Only two of the restaurant chains received an A grade for having no antibiotics in their beef. Those two included the up-and-coming chain BurgerFi and Shake Shack. A police official confirmed that 15 adults were shot outside a funeral home on the South Side of Chicago Tuesday evening.The incident took place around 7 p.m. ET. Chicago Police First Deputy Eric Carter said that there was an officer outside the funeral home at the time the incident took place. Carter said that the incident began when a person in a black car began shooting at funeral attendees who were standing along a street. Funeral attendees reportedly began shooting back at the car. A police report provided by the Chicago Police indicated that the vehicle then came to a rest and those in the vehicle fled.One person of interest is being questioned, Carter confirmed. WLS-TV in Chicago reports that 10 women and five men were injured in the shooting. Six of the victims were listed as being in serious condition at local hospitals, the other nine were in good condition.The age range of the victims spanned between 21 and 65. 943

A newly married man hasn't had much time to celebrate his marriage as he's been in the hospital with the rare condition acute flaccid myelitis for more than 100 days.Bridget Williquette and Adam Spoerri got married July 21, 2018. They left for their road trip honeymoon a few days later. But on August 5, Adam had to be taken to the emergency room with a respiratory disease that was affecting his breathing.Adam's body became increasingly paralyzed while in the ER, leaving his chest, arms, lungs, throat, facial muscles and neck without feeling. He was admitted to the Respiratory Intensive Care Unit that same day and has since been on life support.Adam and Bridget now communicate through writing on paper, as Adam's hands and wrists were not affected by paralysis as much as other areas of his body.He has been doing daily occupational and physical therapy and has made progress in being able to hold his head up on his own.A GoFundMe page has been set up for Adam and Bridget. After a shortage of poll workers in Kentucky's June primary meant limited polling locations, the partnership between Secretary of State Michael Adams and the Kentucky Guild of Brewers is intended to reach people who may have never considered working election day."Everybody needs to be out there voting every single year, but especially this year," said Bailey Johnson, marketing and sustainability manager for Pivot Brewing in Lexington.
