While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is urging Americans not to travel this holiday season, it's clear that many will choose to do so anyway.Between Nov. 25 and Nov. 29 — the height of the Thanksgiving travel surge —the Transportation Security Agency (TSA) said it screened about 4.5 million travelers. While that represented 39% less travelers than last year, it represented the most travelers the agency had screened since the start of the pandemic. With another surge in travel expected for Christmas and New Year's, the TSA has offered some helpful tips when it comes to packing luggage for the holiday season.Packing giftsDo not pre-wrap gifts: Gifts need to be screened like any other piece of luggage, meaning gifts need to be unwrapped if they need to be inspected. The TSA suggests wrapping once you reach your destination, or wrapping in a gift bag.Be sure to pack gifts that contain large amounts liquid, like perfumes, gel candles or snow globes, in a checked bag. TSA allows containers with 3.4 ounces of liquid or less for carry-ons.Snowboards, snowshoes and ice skates can be carried on, but be sure to check with airlines about a plane's overhead bin space. Skis and ski poles will need to be checked.Packing foodHomemade baked goods and other treats can be carried on, but any sort of jams, jellies or syrups are liquids and should be checked if they're in a container larger than 3.4 ounces. A rule of thumb? "If you can spill it, spray it, spread it, pump it or pour it, then it should be packed in a checked bag if the container is larger than 3.4 ounces."Higher-proof alcoholic beverages (between 24% and 70% alcohol by volume) are limited in check bags to five liters a passenger. Any beverage with less than 24% alcohol by volume has no size limit in a checked bag.Mini bottles of alcohol can be carried on, as long as they are less than 3.4 ounces and fit "comfortably" in a single quart-sized bag.Packing electronics Electronics to be given as a gift can be carried on, but remember to place electronics larger than a laptop in their own bin with nothing above or below it.TSA allows drones past checkpoints, but double-check with airlines on their policies about transporting drones.Remember, loose lithium batteries are prohibited in checked bags. When Bob Prebola saw a young white man riding a bike and putting up posters in his neighborhood, he and his wife took a close look and thought somebody was being racist. The picture is of a man, who appears to be Black, with his nose distorted to look larger or turned up.Prebola took down the posters near his house in Livonia, Michigan, and told 7 Action News, "the picture to me is highly offensive. People can make their own determination.”The wording on the posters says "searching for a missing friend, please contact", but the phone number goes to a cable TV customer service line. 596

With increased expenditures and decreased tax revenues, the debt owed by the US federal government is expected to exceed the GDP of the US in 2021, according to a government analysis. On Wednesday, the Congressional Budget Office released the updated figures showing that the federal government’s debt is projected to be 104% of the size of the economy in fiscal year 2021. 2021 is expected to be the first time since 1946 that the amount of debt is larger than the size of the economy. The CBO’s projection shows that the debt is expected to remain larger than the size of the economy through the upcoming decade. For several decades following World War II, the amount of debt the US owed relative to the size of the economy decreased, bottoming out in 1974 at 23%. The US debt began increasing in the 70s and 80s as balanced budgets became more of an exception. The last time the US had a balanced budget was in 2001. While the US debt burden decreased for most of George W. Bush’s presidency, it began to skyrocket amid the last recession. The CBO says that while 2020 saw a slight decline in revenue, the year saw a massive increase in government spending amid the coronavirus pandemic. To see the full analysis, click here. 1231
With most Kindergarten through grade 12 schools starting in less than a month, many parents are trying to figure out what is best for their family when given the option between in-person or virtual learning? What about preschool for 3 to 5-year-olds who were looking forward to in-person learning this fall? For parents who believe it’s safer to keep their child home, there are ways to get them learning beyond the A, B, C’s.“With our younger children we know they really thrive in predictability and routine and that is all gone right now,” said parenting expert Carly Dorogi.Preschool participation has fallen by half during the pandemic, according to the National Institute for Early Education Research. But that doesn’t mean kids can’t learn at home.Dorogi says children ages 3 to 5 can learn math using everyday items.“If I have five Cheerios on the table this is what five looks like and it’s a small amount compared to when I have ten Cheerios on the table,” Dorogi said.Playing with dolls or action figures can help language skills, forcing children to talk and put sentences together. Playtime is motor skills time.“Our little guys can actually improve their handwriting by playing with play dough or doing anything that’s a small motor that strengthens their hand muscles,” Dorogi said.If you want to introduce virtual learning, Dorogi suggests Osmo’s starter kit. It’s an app and hands-on play.If you’re looking for workbooks, check out Grand Haven-Based School Zone Publishing. They say their preschool-aged items have been selling more now due to the pandemic. And they have an app called Anywhere Teacher that has a curriculum to follow.Barbara Peacock is the managing director of School Zone Publishing.“What they need to learn first, then next and it’s a step by step program so it’s really nice to kind of tie the two together both print material, doing flashcards, working on worksheets and then putting them for 30-minutes a day on Anywhere Teacher and working with them,” she said.It is OK if your preschooler can’t sit still.“They need to move," Dorogi explained. "Sitting at a desk for even an hour is too much and I don’t want parents to feel like that’s the expectation. So, think about alternative seating. If your child learns best laying on the floor or sitting in a bean bag.”Dorogi suggests something as simple as a yoga ball on a milk crate that allows your fidgety child to focus.“That is truly how their brain works and when we allow them to move and interact and talk that’s when they are going to learn,” she said. This story was originally reported by Syma Chowdhry at WXYZ. 2615
