A highly specialized group of employees at public utility plants who have jobs that are impossible to do at home are some of these workers. Some workers at the Claude "Bud" Lewis Carlsbad Desalination Plant are going above and beyond to make sure our drinking water is safe from the coronavirus. When we think of heroes during this coronavirus pandemic, we immediately think of medical staff, grocery workers, and delivery people. But remember to thank those who continue to provide water. "The plant cannot run without these operators," Jessica Jones, communications director at the desalination plant said. They have been living at the Carlsbad Desalination Plant since last Thursday. For 21 days, they will be on 12-hour shifts and sleeping in their RV's parked inside the facility."Being completely locked down is the only way we can ensure that these operators remain healthy," Jones said.Having no human contact with the outside world, these quarantined employees will get food delivered to them at the gate. Cold vs. flu vs. coronavirus symptomsAnd if they get sick, San Diego County will be short 50 million gallons of clean seawater-turned-drinking water per day, about 10 percent of the county's entire water supply.The other 90 percent comes from snowpack or rainfall. It goes through the San Diego County Water Authority for a deep clean. "All treatment plants have multiple processes that will either kill or inactivate bacteria, viruses, and other contaminants in the water," Jim Fisher, director of operations and maintenance at the San Diego County Water Authority, said. So experts say there is no need for buying water bottles in bulk. "You can have confidence that the water is safe," Fisher said. "The water is continually being treated, and it's monitored 24 hours a day. The COVID-19 is not anything unusual from a water treatment perspective."The plant will soon start a campaign for local students to write letters to the quarantined workers at the Carlsbad Desalination Plant. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Every Thursday afternoon in Logan Heights, people line up to get food.Angela Brannon-Baptiste is the woman who started the pantry and the organization that supplies it, called "It's All About the Kids".The non-profit has been serving local families since 2004, handing out more than 1.5 million meals and counting."They tell us that for many of them this is the only food they're receiving because there's just no money to buy food," said Baptiste.When the pandemic hit the group saw the need grow almost overnight."We saw hundreds of additional families come to see us each week and it was a bit frightening," Baptiste explained.Although they'd like to help everyone, they're restricted by their own means.Unlike some other food distribution programs that operate on a first come first serve basis, It's All About the Kids takes a more targeted approach."We decided we needed to narrow that down and really work with the schools to identify who was most in need, so that's who we help now," Baptiste said.At this point, that help is going to about 2,200 families currently on the program.Those who show up get boxes of not just something to eat, but something good to eat.Batiste says it's important they provide as much fresh food as possible, " I think that food is so important and that is our responsibility as successful adults to give back to those that are less fortunate and to help them, so that's just always been my mantra." 1463

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Firefighters are trying to determine what caused a brush fire in Mission Valley Wednesday afternoon.The fire erupted along Interstate 8 and Texas Street near iFLY around 3:00 p.m.Firefighters say steady wind carried flames from a tree across the overpass, catching dry brush on fire near Camino Del Rio.The Texas Street off-ramp from Interstate 8 was closed in both directions due to the blaze. Firefighters say a quarter of an acre was burned in the fire.Thick brush and trees were burned, but no business in the area were damaged. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hundreds gathered in Balboa Park to pray for the 50 people killed in the New Zealand terrorist attack and spread the message that hate has no home here.About a dozen speakers shared stories of the victims or hate directed at minorities."It will take all of us to put hate back in it's corner," Sara Hassane, 17, said. "Just pure evil and again it has no place in this world and it's just sad," San Diego Police Chief David Nisleit said. He and more than a dozen of his officers surrounded the event, along with snipers on the roof of nearby buildings, ensuring the crowd felt safe."We have officers out here making sure we don't have a copycat or anyone tries to do anything," he said.Though fear, still permeated the crowd. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Federal indictments were unsealed Thursday charging 75 people nationwide, 40 in San Diego, with involvement in an international money-laundering scheme.Prosecutors said those charged have been involved with crimes ranging from drug distribution to money laundering.Investigators seized more than million, 95 kilograms of methamphetamine, 63 kilograms of heroin, 10 kilograms of fentanyl, 92 kilograms of cocaine, 252 kilograms of marijuana, and 20 firearms, including semiautomatic assault rifles and handguns.RELATED: Ex-MLB pitcher Esteban Loaiza now faces federal drug charge"We have siphoned the cash and the life out of a San Diego-based international money laundering organization with ties to the Sinaloa Cartel," U.S. Attorney Adam Braverman said.
