SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Students at Gompers Preparatory Academy were evacuated following a threat the school said it received Monday. San Diego Police say they received a call around 3:50 p.m. after someone reportedly left a voicemail on an administrative line at the school, making a vague bomb threat. A staff member at the school pulled a fire alarm, initiating the evacuation. "GPA received a telephonic threat after school today and the campus has been evacuated," the school said in an Instagram post. According to authorities, the students were evacuated to a nearby park. Roughly 80 students were still on campus along with 30 to 35 staff members. Police arrived and used a K9 to comb through the school, but found no trace of a bomb. An investigation is underway to determine who left the voicemail. Today was the first day students returned to class at the academy. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Unified is fast-tracking several security-related upgrades on several schools. The first upgrade started this week at Miramar Ranch Elementary school, where a new, taller perimeter fence was installed. The district made the decision last week to prioritize roughly -million worth of projects.  They will be paid for by a voter-approved bond measure. The plans were already on the district's to-do list, but they now moved up the schedule.A district spokeswoman says it is in response to the climate plaguing classrooms across America, where school safety and security are front and center.  Campus security has been under heavy scrutiny following the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.“Of course we are worried about school security in the wake of all the shootings,” Diane Hunter, a Miramar Ranch Elementary parent said,  “It’s a naughty problem because we want to balance logistics and ease of access for parents and volunteers, but we also want our kids to be safe.  So I’m glad that the school is taking a look at it and making improvements."The list of projects includes adding and upgrading things like fences, door locks and gate, visitor access control, site radios and security cameras.A timeline for the projects in the individual schools was not readily available.  1380

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego’s unemployment rate is near historic lows, but plenty of people are still out of work. 10News is exploring ways to help you improve your competitive edge in the job market. “I freelance, and I have a part-time job that has been helping me get through,” said Katie Orchard, who has been looking for full-time work for the past four months. Orchard is in search of stability, but in a competitive job market, that search becomes more difficult. RELATED: Making It in San Diego: Hiring growth reported in all San Diego fields“It’s hard, it’s hard for everybody,” said OrchardCurrently, the unemployment rate in San Diego as of April 2019 is at 3 percent. However, the employment rate in San Diego is also down. With a job market continually changing, how do you improve your edge and stand out?According to Allie Barara and Dana Ellison, both recruiters at Creative Circle in San Diego, the key to standing out, is your resume. RELATED: LIST: Jobs available for retirees“Because there are so many people looking for positions they get lost in the shuffle, and they are not hearing back. It’s kinda like that black hole of the unknown once you submit your resume,” said Allie Barara. Barara says, job candidates need to be specific with programs and software. “I think what a lot of people miss on their resume, is that they don’t spell out the specific softwares they are proficient in. I think showing that at the top of their resume is really going to highlight and give you those extra buzzwords,” said Barara. Another way to make your resume stand out is including or obtaining certificates in your specific field of interest. RELATED: Making It in San Diego: Single mom uses free training to switch careers“The world is becoming so digital in general, so any digital certifications you can get, Google AdWords, Facebook Ads Manager, Facebook Analytics, anything like that. But also the specific softwares and CMS’ will really stick out to employers. They want you to have the experience, but having that certification to back it up, will also go a long way as well,” Barara said. According to Dana Ellison, a senior recruiter, a common mistake job seekers make is not applying for the right job.“I say titles are a little nebulous. If you see a job and say hey this describes all the skill sets I do, but it’s not how I’m marketing myself, that would be a great way to start,” said Ellison. Ellison also suggests job seekers ditch the fluff words to make room for things that matter. “If someone says they are a good communicator, a team player, a fast learner, those are things literally everyone says, so those things can be left off,” said Ellison. Both Ellison and Barara also suggest being patient and confident in your work. See the Creative Circle resume guide here. 2813

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Some "national holidays" make lunch and dinner that much easier. Take Wednesday, when America celebrates National Cheeseburger Day.Across the country, hungry Americans can grab special burger deals in honor of the delicious day.And what's a holiday without a little tradition. The burger is said to have been invented in New Haven, Conn., in 1900 when Louis Lassen took a steak trimmings, grilled them into a patty, and served it between two slices of bread. But, of course, there are several rival claims to that. The cheeseburger has its own origin claim out of Denver, Colo., where it's believed Louis Ballast created the cheeseburger at his restaurant in 1935.In any case, the dish is enjoyed by many throughout the world who are much more interested in its taste than true origin. And by now, we're sure you're more interested in today's deals. Go forth and enjoy!Applebee's: Get a Classic Bacon Cheeseburger for .99, plus the chain's endless fries with the burger on Wednesday.Burger King: Burger King's deal lasts through Sunday, giving diners the chance to get a cheeseburger for 59 cents via the chain's mobile app.Dairy Queen: Grab the two for Super Snack deal, which comes with mix and match options of a cheeseburger, a small sundae, fries, pretzel sticks or chicken tenders.Island's: Take off any burger at Island's on Wednesday by becoming a Rewards Member through the Island's mobile app.Jack in the Box: Order up a free burger with any purchase through the Jack in the Box mobile app at participating locations Wednesday.McDonald's: Get two cheeseburgers for via the McDonald's mobile app from Sept. 18 - 24 at participating locations.Red Robin: Red Robin is offering a Gourmet Cheeseburger and Bottomless Steak Fries for with any beverage purchase at participating restaurants on Wednesday.Smashburger: Get buy-one-get-one free double classic Smashburgers on Wednesday.Wendy's: It's not a special deal for National Cheeseburger Day, but a Biggie Bag with a bacon double stack, nuggest, fries, and a drink is the perfect fix for Wednesday. 2097

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- SeaWorld San Diego is being allowed to reopen, but certain parts of the park will have to remain closed, a San Diego County spokesman said.A county spokesman told ABC 10News that the park is being allowed to reopen under California’s guidance for zoos.SeaWorld San Diego will be able to open its outdoor areas of the park, but indoor areas -- such as its aquariums -- and rides will not be open to guests under the specific zoo guidance.Under the zoo guidance, the park will have to post a Safe Reopening Plan like other businesses. It remains unknown when the park will officially reopen; SeaWorld San Diego officials did not immediately respond to ABC 10News’ request for comment. The park has been closed since March due to the coronavirus pandemic. The park's website states that for season passholders, tickets will be extended as long as the closure lasted. The company’s most recent earnings report revealed troubling numbers from the second quarter and first six months of 2020, including revenue down 96 percent compared to the same time last year.Parents around San Diego said the news is a welcome sign after a summer of closures. Raquel Cusi said her four kids ask when they can go back to SeaWorld on a daily basis."For me I feel like I’ve been born and raised in San Diego, SeaWorld is a staple, and the fact that we can’t be there is sad, so I think it’ll be really awesome for San Diego families," said Cusi.Claudia Harris is a mom of three and said her kids love going to see the killer whales. In a zoom call, the kids all shared their excitement."I’m so excited to watch the killer whale show because the whales are so cool," said her son, while holding a whale toy.SeaWorld is joining the San Diego Zoo and the USS Midway in partial reopenings, but a LEGOLAND spokesperson said they have not been told when that park will reopen. LEGOLAND General Manager Kurt Stocks said, in a statement, “LEGOLAND California Resort is ready and eager to open once the state and county guidelines are given. All health and safety guidelines that have been approved for other San Diego attractions can easily be observed at our Park even if it means closing the very few indoor attractions.” 2219
