BEIJING, June 10 (Xinhua) -- China hopes the United States will take an objective, rational and just view towards China's national defense policy and the development of its armed forces, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang here on Thursday.Qin's comment came in response to a question on China's attitude towards a U.S. military officer's remarks on China's military development.The Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen said in a speech to the Asia Society's annual dinner that he was now "genuinely concerned" about "the gap as wide as what seems to be forming between China's stated intent and its military programs."Responding to the remarks, Qin urged the U.S. side to do more to build military relations with China, rather than harming them, so to ensure regional peace, stability and security.Qin said the sole purpose of China's defense policy is self-defense and its military is being developed in a peaceful way.China's development will not pose a threat to any country and anyone, he stressed, adding "We will not threaten and invade others."China opposes hegemonism, he said. China is still a developing country, and even if it becomes a developed country in the future, it will still stick to the road of peaceful development and will not seek hegemony."It is the solemn commitment made by the Chinese government to the outside world," he said.

SHANGHAI, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) - Swiss President Doris Leuthard Thursday said the rise in bilateral trade between Switzerland and China is a delightful surprise, as she seeks to expand economic cooperation with China through a free trade agreement.The trade increase was a surprise as it came during the economic crisis last year, Leuthard said.In the first six months of 2010, Swiss exports to China increased more than 30 percent and Chinese exports to Switzerland increased more than 16 percent.Total trade volume between the two countries during the period hit 6.2 billion Swiss Francs (5.86 billion U.S. dollars), she added.Leuthard said she is optimistic about the future of Sino-Swiss bilateral trade, as the two countries are working on a free trade agreement."We are ending feasibility study (for the agreement) so both sides know the market, the opportunities and the risks very well. It is very promising," she said.After the joint feasibility study, the two sides will enter the final stage ahead of the signing of the deal, she added.Talks on the free trade agreement began in 2007 when Leuthard, as head of the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, signed an agreement with then-Minister of Commerce Bo Xilai. The agreement recognized the full market status of China.Switzerland hopes to be the first European country to have a free trade agreement with China, Leuthard told Xinhua in an interview last year.China is Switzerland's second largest trade partner in Asia after Japan.

BEIJING, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- China continued a five-day military exercise on Wednesday as the country's air defense forces carried out reconnaissance, early warning, electromagnetic interference and ground-to-air attack drills.More than 12,000 Chinese military personnel, along with seven types of military aircraft divided into Red and Blue rivals, took part in the exercise code-named "Vanguard-2010,"-- which started on Tuesday in seven cities across Henan and Shandong Provinces.On Wednesday morning, the Blue forces used reconnaissance planes and electronics warfare aircraft to conduct surveillance and jam the network systems used by the Red forces for command and communications as well as reconnaissance and early warning.A ground-to-air attack drill began at Wednesday noon, as the Blue forces launched unmanned aerial vehicles, fighters and helicopters to attack their rivals.The ground-to-air attack drill will last overnight till 6 a.m. Thursday, military sources said.

HARARE, June 15 (Xinhua) -- Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) Secretary-General Sindiso Ngwenya on Tuesday urged China to enter into joint ventures with Africa's largest regional trading and economic grouping to capitalize on the customs union that was launched last year.The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa, boasting 19 member states and a population of more than 450 million, is endowed with vast natural and human resources that make it a fertile investment destination, Ngwenya said."With a combined population of 456 million and a combined Gross Domestic Product of 450 billion U.S. dollars, this region is very rich in natural resources, rich in human resources and land for agriculture."This region will therefore become the region of first choice for investment and has the potential to feed the whole world," Ngwenya told Xinhua in an interview.He said China should take COMESA as its preferred investment destination and increase trade with Africa's largest trading and economic grouping.Ngwenya has previously urged more Chinese investment in the manufacturing sector so that Africa can move up the value chain and increase the incomes of its people while ensuring that less wealth is exported abroad.Trade between COMESA countries and China has also been growing by between 50 percent and 100 percent depending on the country, but on average by more than 50 percent annually and by the end of 2008 China-Africa trade was approaching the 100 billion U.S. dollars, according to Ngwenya.Ngwenya said the COMESA Customs Union presented immense opportunities for the Asian giant to deepen and consolidate economic cooperation with member states, most of whom it had strong bilateral, economic and political ties with. BEIJING, June 24 (Xinhua) -- In effort to enhance its supervisory role, China's top legislature held an inquiry Thursday into the central government's final accounting for 2009, the first-ever inquiry held into a particular matter.On behalf of the State Council, China's Cabinet, several senior officials from the Ministry of Finance, attended the inquiry to answer questions raised by lawmakers at the 15th session of the Standing Committee of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC), the top legislature.The lawmakers focused on issues of general public concern such as how to improve the management of central government's budgeting and accounting, deepen the reform of financial and tax systems, and increase spending on social welfare projects.The decision to order inquiries into government work on certain issues of general public concern, which would require the attendance of senior officials of central government departments, was adopted during the annual NPC session in March.Li Fei, vice chairman of the Legislative Affairs Commission of the NPC Standing Committee, said the inquiry was a concrete and important step for the NPC Standing Committee to exercise and improve supervision of the government.According to the Law on Oversight, which took effect in 2007, senior officials of central government departments, the Supreme People's court and the Supreme People's Procuratorate, if requested, are required to attend legislative meetings to respond to lawmakers' questions over bills or government work reports being reviewed.
