Congress is currently honoring one of its own — longtime Georgia representative and Civil Rights leader John Lewis.Lewis' body was flown from Alabama to Washington, D.C. on Monday, and is currently lying in state in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda.Members of the House of Representatives and Senate will have a chance to pay their respects before a public viewing takes place this evening. Among those who paid tribute to Lewis with speeches were Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-California. CNN reports that the public viewing will take place outdoors due to the coronavirus pandemic. On Sunday, Lewis' body made a final trip over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, where half a century ago, he led several marches for voting rights. The first of those marches became known as "Bloody Sunday," as Lewis and other civil rights activists were met with force from state and local police as they crossed the bridge. The marches sparked a national conversation about voting rights for Black people, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was passed a few months later.Following events in Washington, Lewis' body will return to Georgia — the state he represented in Congress for more than 30 years. Lewis' funeral will take place on Thursday at the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta — the same church that was formerly led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.A public viewing at the Capitol building is one of the highest honors a Representative, a Senator or elected official can receive upon their death. Rep. Elijah Cummings, a fellow Civil Rights leader, and Congressman leader, was the last person to receive the honor upon his death in 2019. President George H.W. Bush and Sen. John McCain have also had public memorials at the Capitol in recent years.Lewis died on July 17 after a six-month battle with cancer. 1872

Community colleges have always put career readiness at the forefront of the courses they offer. Now, in the current economic downturn, they're hoping to increase their student to job pipeline."We really feel like our role is to identify what jobs are available right now for students that they can apply and be working while going to school. What are the future jobs that we need to be preparing students for?" asked Dr. Shanna Jackson, the President of Nashville State Community College in Tennessee. Dr. Jackson says students are battling so much right now, including choosing between having to work and going to school.Dr. Jackson is hoping an million investment in the company Handshake, to help expand job recruitment to community colleges, will help."We actually already have 70 community colleges that have already signed on to be early pilot partners with us so we're really learning from them. We’re listening to them. We’ve started an advisory group with this population so that we can continue to ascertain what are the biggest pain points. What are their biggest areas of need for these students," said Christine Cruzvergara, Handshake's VP of Higher Education and Student Success.Handshake helps connect students with employers through career fairs, job postings and other services, and previously only worked with four-year universities. Cruzvergara says they're working with state systems throughout the country to connect with technical and community colleges."It'll be a really similar experience. It’ll all be part of one network and that's actually why it's a huge benefit to community colleges. We know for some of our biggest employers that they want to recruit 2-year talent. They don't see 2-year talent as different from 4-year talent for internships and jobs, they simply have a number of different types of roles and positions that are available to all types of students," said Cruzvergara. The partnership hopes to bring new recruitment benefits to students."The tools that something like this provides really enhances their opportunity to cast a wider net and then they can decide which job offer they want to say yes to instead of maybe taking the first one they hear about," said Dr. Jackson. Dr. Jackson says more employers are realizing the value of an Associate's Degree and the technical skills it can often provide, especially in today's economy. 2393

Cycling legend Lance Armstrong will pay the United States million for using performance-enhancing drugs while the US Postal Service was paying millions to sponsor his team, according to the US Department of Justice. The lawsuit accused Armstrong of violating his contract with the US Postal Service and committing fraud by misleading the USPS and the public when he denied using performance-enhancing drugs, known as PEDs, according to the release from the Justice Department.Armstrong's denial influenced the USPS decision to continue sponsoring the team in 2000, the Justice Department said. The decision to do that increased fees for the sponsorship, the release said, and increased the money going into Armstrong's pocket.Between 2001 and 2004, the Postal Service paid million?in sponsorship fees to Armstrong's team."No one is above the law," Chad Readler, acting assistant attorney general for the Justice Department's Civil Division, said in a news release. "A competitor who intentionally uses illegal PEDs not only deceives fellow competitors and fans, but also sponsors, who help make sporting competitions possible. This settlement demonstrates that those who cheat the government will be held accountable."The civil lawsuit dates back to 2013, when the Justice Department?joined a lawsuit?accusing Armstrong of a breach of contract for using prohibited drugs during competition. It came just months after Armstrong sat down with Oprah Winfrey in a televised interview and admitted to using PEDs.Thomas J. Marshall, general counsel and executive vice president of the USPS, said the USPS supported the Justice Department's case. "With this case, as in all other instances, the Postal Service vigorously defends our brand and our position as a trusted government institution."The myth of Lance Armstrong began to unravel in June 2012, when the US Anti-Doping Agency filed doping charges against Armstrong, which he denied at the time. For years -- especially after he was diagnosed with and then beat testicular cancer -- Armstrong was one of the most celebrated athletes in professional cycling, winning the Tour de France seven times. He was stripped of his accolades and banned from competition. The original complaint was filed in June 2010 by Armstrong's former teammate, Floyd Landis. He admitted that he'd used PEDs as part of the team and filed his complaint under the False Claims Act -- otherwise known as the whistleblower law, which allows private citizens to file lawsuits on behalf of the government if they know the government is being defrauded. The complaint was filed under a certain provision that will allow him to share in the money recovered by the government, the release said. Landis will receive .1 million. 2770

COVINGTON, Ky. -- At least three Northern Kentucky school districts will be closed Monday after state lawmakers rushed through a pension overhaul plan.Covington Independent, Boone County and Kenton County schools confirmed they'll be closed April 2.Covington spokesperson Deb Vance said 180 of 271 teachers called to say they're taking a personal day on Monday. The day will have to be made up later, she said. In Boone County, Superintendent Randy Poe said a day off will let teachers and families travel to Frankfort."Drastic times call for drastic action," Poe said in a letter to parents. "Although closing school is the last thing anyone wants to do, one of the reasons for this decision to close school is because educators feel one of their main responsibilities is to advocate for the children of the Commonwealth."The bill passed Thursday night preserves benefits for current retirees. Most benefits for current workers would also be preserved, but sick days would be capped after this year and will not be applied toward retirement. Some teachers would also have to increase the amount they pay to fund retiree health. However, future teachers would not be guaranteed a set pension when they retire, and would instead use a hybrid 401(k) plan that requires them to contribute more. 1298
