The suspect, a man in his 20s, pulled out a handgun and demanded money from the cash register.The owner, a 40-year-old man, opened the register and gave the man money, police said. The suspect went to a second cash register and demanded money. The employee opened the second register and gave the suspect money.As the suspect was turning to leave, the owner pulled out a handgun. The suspect turned to the owner and the owner shot the suspect twice, hitting him in the abdomen and in the wrist, police say.The suspect was taken to a nearby hospital, but police said his injuries do not appear to be life-threatening. 879

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- One man is behind bars after a series of events in Rancho Penasquitos, including nearly running over a firefighter. Around 2:30 p.m. California Highway Patrol received a report of a reckless vehicle on SR-76 near Cole Grade Road Monday. The blue Toyota RAV4 was reported after unsafely passing vehicles and speeding in the area. Shortly after, CHP reported that the driver - Falahi Abrahim - was involved in a crash and started a brush fire.Shortly after Cal Fire responded to the fire, 37-year-old Abrahim from fled the scene - nearly hitting the firefighter who was trying to help him.Police officers followed, but Abrahim refused to stop and a pursuit began. The pursuit continued westbound on SR-76 to I-15 and transitioned to I-15 Southbound. The vehicle continued to flee from officers on I-15 Southbound and exited the freeway at Camino Del Norte where the vehicle progressed eastbound.During the chase Abrahim failed to stop for two red lights at separate intersections and officers discontinued the pursuit in the interest of public safety.A San Diego Police Department helicopter continued to follow the car, communicating Abrahim's location to the CHP. At 3:11 p.m. the driver stopped near the 10000 block of Carmel Mountain Road. After a short foot pursuit, Abrahim was taken into custody and arrested under suspicion of driving under the influence of a drug and felony evading charges.The incident involving the assault of the firefighter at the collision scene is still under investigation. 1572

"That assessment will be based on local measures of whether the virus is sufficiently under control, as well as progress on testing and federal action on funding," the district said.The district will be announcing more information about its online learning program on Aug. 10. The district had previously offered families an option of in-person or online distance learning.Monday's announcement comes as President Donald Trump continues to put pressure on states to open school campuses. Both districts will continue planning for a return to in-person learning during the 2020-21 academic year, as soon as public health conditions allow.This announcement represents a significant disappointment for the many thousands of teachers, administrators and support staff, who were looking forward to welcoming students back in August. It is obviously an even greater disappointment to the many parents who are anxious for their students to resume their education. Most of all, this decision will impact our students in ways that researchers will take years to understand.Our leaders owe it to all of those impacted by the COVID-19 closures to increase the pace of their work. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Only 92.5 percent of San Diego County’s kindergartners were up to date on all of their vaccinations during the 2018-2019 school year, below the recommended rate.It was a slight .7 decrease from the previous year’s 93.2 percent, according to a report released by the California Department of Public Health. California as a whole also slightly fell below the 95 percent vaccination rate recommended by health experts. “We know that there are individuals that don’t believe in vaccinations and people that homeschool their kids, that’s a population,” said Dr. Wilma Wooten with the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency. Wooten says the drop shouldn’t cause panic, but should make families more aware of the importance of vaccinating their children. She said the county is doing its part by responding in three different ways: policies, practices and programs. That includes legislation like the state ban on personal belief exemptions and also CDC recommendations. Wooten says the most important thing is to make sure all parents are aware of the age appropriate vaccines that not only their children, but all family members should have. Wooten says education is key to avoid the risk of contracting and spreading serious illnesses, like the highly contagious measles outbreak across the United States. She said the county has been doing community outreach about the importance of being vaccinated, especially as more people travel overseas during the summer months.“If an individual with measles is put into a room with ten other individuals, 9 out of 10 individuals will contract the illness, it is that contagious,” said Wooten. “It’s very important that all individuals, children, adults, as well as our seniors get the age appropriate vaccinations.” 1791
