A New York couple who were reportedly on their honeymoon drowned after being caught in a rip current. The United States State Department confirmed to E.W. Scripps that the U.S. citizens died on Oct. 28 while in Turks and Caicos.USA Today reported that New York Attorney Mohammad Malik, 35, and his bride, Dr. Noor Shan, 29, were married just four days when they drowned after being pulled under a rip current near their resort.The groom's father, Maqbool Malik, told Long Island Newsday that the loss is "devastating."He told the newspaper that the couple was pulled out from the water by witnesses, who performed CPR, but they both died at the scene.According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, riptides are "powerful, narrow channels of fast-moving water."Officials with the State Department offered their "sincerest condolences to their loved ones on their loss" and said it had "worked to provide all appropriate consular assistance to the families" and "out of respect to the families during this difficult time, we have no further comment." 1075

A trip to the grocery store can be a difficult and stressful outing for a senior. So, two high schoolers from Maryland jumped in to help their own neighbors, and now their idea is spreading across the nation.The students, just 15 and 16 years old, are coordinating hundreds of free grocery deliveries for seniors in need during the pandemic.“We’ve learned there’s a huge problem, unfortunately, when it comes to senior hunger,” said Matthew Casertano.Casertano and his friend, Dhruv Pai, started by making grocery deliveries to their own grandparents.“I saw the fear in their eyes every time they went to the grocery store,” said Pai. “There was a trade-off they had to make between the necessities and their personal safety that I wanted to avoid at all costs.”“We knew we couldn’t rely on the goodwill of people wearing masks, keeping social distancing, so we had to do the shopping,” said Casertano.Then, one afternoon on the carpool ride home, the teens had an idea. “We thought, ‘What about people who don’t have grandchildren who can’t do the shopping for them?’” said Casertano.That’s when they started Teens Helping Seniors, where any senior in need can email a grocery list for teens to pick up at the store.“We will coordinate a volunteer in their area who can service that request in a one to two-day turnaround,” said Pai.The teens do all the shopping, and then drop off and sanitize each order. It’s a simple favor that means so much to those they help.“I thank you, and I thank God for you, for making such a unique individual as every human being is, but you’re showing it, you’re showing your heart,” said Marie Cavill, a senior who fractured her back during the pandemic. Cavill has physically been unable to leave her home, but she is also frightened to go out and risk a possible COVID-19 exposure.The teens said they were shocked by how many volunteers this program now has. They have 26 chapters in the United States and one chapter in Canada, with more than 600 volunteers. A report says three Milwaukee Police officers were suspended for varying lengths after the arrest (involving a Taser) of Milwaukee Bucks player Sterling Brown.The Journal Sentinel says that the first police officer who confronted Brown on January 26 outside a Walgreens on Milwaukee's south side was suspended for two days.The report says two supervising officers who came to the scene later received 15 and 10 day suspensions, while other officers were reprimanded.Their names were not initially divulged. A sharply divided U.S. Supreme Court has denied a rural Nevada church’s request to strike down as unconstitutional a 50-person cap on worship services as part of the state’s ongoing response to the coronavirus. In a 5-4 decision Friday, the high court refused to grant the request from the Christian church east of Reno to be subjected to the same COVID-19 restrictions in Nevada that allow casinos, restaurants and others to operate at 50% of capacity.
