CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A pedestrian died and others, including children, were injured Monday in a crash involving a construction truck in Chula Vista. The truck driver lost control about 1:15 p.m. in the 500 block of 4th Ave near Shasta Street, police said. The location is a residential street near Scripps Mercy Hospital Chula Vista. The truck hit parked cars including a black pickup, which then struck a pedestrian before flipping over, said officers.Paramedics took the pedestrian to the hospital with critical injuries. The victim, an 81-year-old, later died, police confirmed. A mother and her two children, a baby and a girl, were in a parked car and suffered minor injuries. Chula Vista police are investigating the cause of the crash. At this time, police say it's unclear whether or not drugs or alcohol were involved. 844

But some drivers working for popular ride sharing services like Uber and Lyft are willing to break the law.A hidden camera, undercover investigation by Scripps station WXYZ in Detroit exposed those willing to risk children’s lives for the price of a ride.In Michigan, the law is clear: Children younger than eight or shorter than 57 inches have to be in a child safety seat.First responders say it’s a matter of life and death.“I’ve watched a child go forward, go into the windshield and have a crushed skull,” EMS paramedic Gary McMenamin said.WXYZ decided to put Uber and Lyft drivers to the test, to find out just how many were willing to ignore state law and drive a mother and her 2-year-old son without a child safety seat.Emily Gottschling and her son “Weston” hailed six rides — three to Uber and three to Lyft. Gottschling agreed to be part of the hidden camera investigation.After calling six different drivers, five of them were willing to illegally take Gottschling for a ride without a child car seat.“People have gotten in the car and never asked, so we just go,” one driver said.“If you’re alright with it, I’m okay with it,” another driver said.A different driver acknowledged the law, then said, “Well, I’ll be careful.”The last driver would not allow Gottschling into his car for fear if being ticketed. During the investigation, the drivers never actually rode anywhere and no laws were broken.Uber and Lyft both offered statements in response to the investigatiion.  1666

(KGTV) - While the current focus is on coronavirus, doctors are warning to not forget about other killers that are always present.Dr. Marilyn Norton is the Chief of Staff at Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center and said they’ve seen drastic drops in the number of people coming in to get cancer screenings. She said the three most common cancer screenings are mammograms for breast cancer, Pap smears for cervical cancer and colonoscopies for colon cancer.Sharp Chula Vista saw an 87% decrease in mammograms in April and May of 2020 compared to the same time frame last year. The hospital did pause screenings at the beginning of the closure, but has been doing screenings again since May.Dr. Norton said these screenings can be some of the best life-saving measures.“We know that if patients get found at early stages, the chances of them dying from that cancer is much less,” she said.She said some of the reasons people still are not coming in to get screened could be because people don’t know screenings have resumed, or because people are worried about going to a hospital right now, but she said the difference between now and the beginning of the pandemic is that there is more knowledge of how to stop the spread of coronavirus now, so the hospital is taking preventative steps to keep patients coming in for screenings healthy.“Although there’s a lot of fear regarding the pandemic, we also have to realize that screening is very important to be able to try to catch that cancer at an early stage,” she said.She said she anticipates the lull in screening now to impact cancer rates in the next five to ten years because of cancer that could have been caught at an earlier stage, and she hopes people realize the importance of early screening now to stop that eventual increase.“Don’t ignore the screenings that need to be done in order for you not to have to die from cancer,” said Dr. Norton. 1927

  

CHICAGO, Ill. – The pandemic has been affecting how Americans rest. Some have experienced better sleep and odd dreams, while others are left exhausted.With no morning commute and nowhere to drop the kids off, the stress of the pandemic coupled with a lack of scheduling anchors can lead to sleepless nights.“They could have difficulty falling asleep or what I'm seeing most commonly is difficulty staying asleep,” said Dr. Cathy Goldstein, an associate professor of neurology specializing in sleep disruption at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.She says being stuck at home with unusual schedules shifts our internal body clocks, known as circadian rhythms, in unhealthy ways.“Now, we don't have to get up and go anywhere. So, I see people push their clocks later and they're falling asleep later at night and then they're sleeping in,” said Goldstein. “And so, the subsequent day, they can't fall asleep.”“Pandemic-induced insomnia” or “COVID-somnia” she says is also being compounded by over consumption of media on laptops, cell phones and tablets.“They also allow us to bring little miniature suns into the sleep period,” said Goldstein.A recent survey from Sleep Standards found that 98% of Americans developed sleep problems post lockdown and 68% feel stress or find it hard to sleep even after the lockdown.According to pharmacy benefits manager Express Scripts, between mid-February and mid-March as the outbreak began ramping up, prescriptions for sleep medications jumped nearly 15% compared to the same time last year.“We have seen an increase in prescriptions for insomnia medications. But we do recommend patients try lifestyle changes or OTC, which are over-the-counter supplements,” said Dr. Jessica Nouhavandi, lead pharmacist and CEO of California-based Honeybee Health.Things you can do to combat “COVID-somnia” include exercising early in the day, setting an alarm to wake up at the same time each day, and disabling the snooze button. You can also try winding down several hours before your fixed bedtime and put your devices away at least two hours before you hit the sack. One other tip Goldstein recommends is using amber blue blocking lenses to help with screens and energy efficient bulbs that emit blue spectrum light.“So, by putting on those glasses four hours before bedtime, you're getting rid of that circadian disrupting light. So, that's a huge help,” said Goldstein. Experts like Nouhavandi say sleep is even more essential while trying to confront the COVID-19 pandemic.“The lack of sleep directly affects not only your physical health but your mental health.” 2607

  

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A man was found with multiple stab wounds at a home late Wednesday night, according to Chula Vista police.It happened just after 10 p.m. in the 1400 block of 2nd Avenue.First responders arrived at the location and found the victim in the backyard bleeding from seven wounds, said police.The victim originally called police claiming he was shot, but when paramedics arrived they noticed the man was actually stabbed seven times.Police said his injuries are non life-threatening.It's unclear what led up to the stabbing. 556
