San Diegans were reminded again this weekend that what was formerly known as Qualcomm Stadium is not the city's most glamorous place. The lights just turned off in the middle of San Diego State’s game winning drive against Stanford on Saturday. But the aging San Diego Stadium, as its currently known, appears to be primed for yet another new chapter - even as public officials debate how the site should be redeveloped.  San Diego County Credit Union, which already sponsors the Holiday bowl, is stepping up with 0,000 to place its name on the stadium until the end of next year.  But that's not all.  The credit union’s proposal to the City Council outlines plans to market the venue. SAN DIEGO — A College Area nonprofit that is seeing record requests for its services may not survive the pandemic itself.Sharia's Closet provides free clothes to people who have an emergency need. Founder Shamine Linton said with the Coronavirus pandemic, the organization has already served more than 2,500 families in 2020, a record pace. "Due to unemployment, homelessness and domestic violence, our needs have grown," Linton said. Sharia's Closet, named for Linton's daughter, operates out of a former dental office near San Diego State University. It's divided into five rooms that are filled with clothes for children, teens, men and women - casual to professional. Linton said the organization gets connected to families through 54 social service organizations. While the demand is at an all-time high, the prospects of surviving past 2020 are not. "I don't think I'll have the money to continue for the next year," Linton said. Linton said the organization survives off community donations, but those have lagged in this economy. She has reduced hours for her staff of two, and the closet is now only open three days a week. The formerly manageable ,500 in monthly operating costs is now becoming daunting. "I'm hoping for financial donations to help keep our doors open, to help keep the service for the community that needs it the most," Linton said.Linton said Sharia's Closet has been able to receive public assistance for personal protective equipment, but not operations. SAN CLEMENTE (CNS) - A woman was arrested today for allegedly collecting funds and items she claimed would benefit firefighters battling the Holy Fire and then keeping them for herself.Ashley Bemis, 28, of San Juan Capistrano allegedly "presented herself on social media as the wife of a firefighter working on the fire line of the August 2018 Holy Fire in Riverside and Orange counties," according to Orange County Sheriff's Department Public Information Manager Carrie Braun."On multiple social media pages, Bemis posted pictures of herself and her fictitious firefighter husband asking for donations," Braun said. "She solicited for items she claimed would benefit the firefighters working alongside her husband battling the blaze that ultimately burned more than 23,000 acres in the Cleveland National Forest and destroyed 18 structures."The posts led people and businesses in San Clemente to make donations and Bemis is suspected of taking more than ,000 in cash and items such as socks, sports drinks, water and camping equipment, Braun said."A captain with a local fire agency became suspicious of Bemis' requests, and contacted the Orange County Sheriff's Department to investigate," Braun said. "Investigators interviewed victims and obtained search warrants for Bemis' vehicle, residence and garages. They recovered donated items consistent with the items Bemis collected intended as donations for the Holy Fire."Investigators believe Bemis concocted a phony story, complete with a fictitious husband, "with the intention of soliciting donations to defraud victims," Braun said. "They also became aware, through additional social media posts from members of the community, of past (allegedly) fraudulent activity by Bemis, including multiple prior faked pregnancies in an attempt to illegally obtain money from unsuspecting victims."The investigation led to warrant being issued for Bemis' arrest. She was arrested and was booked on suspicion of felony grand theft, second-degree burglary, witness intimidation and making false financial statements, Braun said.Bemis was being held in lieu of ,000 bail, Braun said. 2138

SALEM, Ore. – Oregon voted to legalize psilocybin mushrooms for therapeutic use on Tuesday.A psilocybin is a hallucinogenic chemical obtained from certain types of fresh and dried mushrooms, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).With 81% of votes reported Wednesday morning, 55.8% of the electorate had voted to approve Oregon Measure 109, The Associated Press reports.While some states have decriminalized the so-called “magic mushrooms” or "shrooms," this measure makes Oregon the first state to legalize them.Under the measure, licensed service providers are permitted to administer psilocybin-producing mushroom and fungi products to those 21 years or older. The DEA says it’s often ingested orally, brewed as a tea or added to foods.The measure authorizes the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) to create a program to help these licensed providers to administer the products.The measure was backed by war veterans with PTSD, those with terminal illnesses and others who suffer from anxiety or depression, who claim psilocybin helps.Some opponents say science does not yet indicate that psilocybin is a safe medical treatment. 1150
