YICHANG, Hubei, July 28 (Xinhua) -- China's Three Gorges Dam on the swollen Yangtze River is experiencing another test as flood flows peaking at 56, 000 cubic meters per second, the greatest peak flood of the year, arrived at the dam at 8 a.m. Wednesday, engineers said.The dam buffered the flood by discharging water at a rate of 40,000 cubic meters per second, holding up 16,000 cubic meters in a second, they said.The water level of the reservoir behind the dam rose to 158 meters at 8 a.m. Wednesday, about 17 meters under its maximum capacity of 175 meters. Flood waters are sluiced with the water outflux monitored at 40,000 cubic meters per second at Three Gorges Dam in Yichang, central China's Hubei Province, July 20, 2010. China's Three Gorges Dam project on the Yangtze River stood its biggest flood-control test at 8 a.m onTuesday since completion.Continuous downpours in weeks boosted the water levels of the upper reaches of the Yangtze.The flow on the Yangtze's upper reaches topped 70,000 cubic meters a second on July 20, the highest level since the dam was completed last year and 20,000 cubic meters more than the flow during the 1998 floods that killed 4,150 people.

BEIJING, July 5 (Xinhua) -- China and Britain on Monday pledged to enhance military ties.The pledge came out of the meeting between Vice Chairman of China's Central Military Commission Guo Boxiong and visiting British Chief of Defense Staff Jock Stirrup.The military relationship is an important component of China-Britain relations, and the two sides have witnessed frequent exchange of high-level visits and fruitful cooperation in many fields, Guo said.He said China's armed forces attached importance to the friendly cooperation with the British armed forces, and would work with it to enhance mutual trust and expand cooperation.Stirrup echoed Guo saying the military relationship was very important and the British side hoped to strengthen military cooperation with China.The two sides also discussed the development of China-Britain relations and international and regional issues of common concern.Highlighting the development of China-Britain relations in recent years, Guo said the bilateral relationship is at a new historic starting point. BEIJING, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao on Tuesday expressed their condolences to the families of the eight Hong Kong tourists killed in a hostage crisis in the Philippines.In a joint letter to Donald Tsang Yam-kuen, chief executive of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), Hu and Wen expressed their deep sorrow for the families of those killed and consolation for the injured."We are in grave shock and grief on hearing that eight Hong Kong compatriots fell and many others were injured in the Manila hostage incident," the letter said."We hereby express our grave condolences and our deep sympathy to the families of the Hong Kong compatriots, and we hope the injured will recover soon," the letter said.Vice President Xi Jinping on Tuesday also expressed his condolences in a letter to Tsang.Eight Hong Kong tourists were confirmed dead and seven injured, two seriously, in Monday's incident in Manila, an official of Chinese Embassy in the Philippines said Tuesday.The coachload of Hong Kong tourists were held hostage for more than 10 hours by a former policeman who was protesting his dismissal before police commandos stormed the vehicle.

ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from the massive mudslide in Zhouqu County, northwest China's Gansu Province, has risen to 1,239 as of 4 p.m. Saturday, with 505 still missing, local disaster relief headquarters said.The county education department said Saturday that primary and middle schools in Zhouqu will start the autumn semester on Aug. 25, ten days later than scheduled.This was because hundreds of homes and one primary school were buried and more schools were damaged or inundated in water. Many school classrooms are also being used as temporary shelters.By Saturday noon, power supply was resumed in 8,375 homes, or 76 percent of all affected in the blackout.Vegetables were on sale for the first time on Saturday, nearly a week after the mudslide buried the only vegetable market in Zhouqu.Local authorities ordered 8,400 kg vegetables from neighboring Longnan City and they were sold Saturday afternoon at the same or even lower prices prior to the disaster.Downpours from Wednesday night to Thursday morning have triggered severe floods and mudslides in Longnan, leaving 33 dead and 63 missing, local government said.A major road into the counties of Chengxian and Huixian in Longnan was reopened Saturday night after being damaged in the floods.More than 500 troops and 26 doctors have arrived in the hardest-hit Chengxian, where at least 20 people were killed and more than 10,000 residents had been relocated, to join in the rescue operations.In Gansu's neighboring province of Sichuan, floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains this week have killed at least 10 people and left another 57 missing.In Wenchuan of Sichuan alone, the epicenter of an 8-magnitude quake in May 2008 that left 87,000 people dead or missing, the floods had left 38 people missing by 3 p.m. Saturday.Some regions in Sichuan received a rainfall of more than 200 millimeters between Thursday and Saturday, prompting water levels in many major local rivers to rise above warning levels.Heavy rains also wrecked the eastern province of Shandong this week, forcing the evacuation of 204,500 people, damaging 547,100 hectares of crops, toppling 15,873 houses and causing a direct economic loss of 2.38 billion yuan (350 million U.S. dollars).China suffers the worst flood in at least a decade this summer. Floods and other rain-triggered disaster had left more than 2,300 people dead and further 1,200 missing nationwide this year.
