President Donald Trump and Democrat Joe Biden will have their microphones cut off in Thursday’s debate while their rival delivers their opening two-minute answer to each of the debate topics. The 90-minute debate is divided into six 15-minute segments, with each candidate granted two minutes to deliver uninterrupted remarks before proceeding to an open debate. The open discussion portion of the debate will not feature a mute button, but interruptions by either candidate will count toward their time in the second and final debate Thursday. The nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates announced the rule changes Monday, three weeks after a chaotic opening faceoff between the two presidential contenders that featured frequent interruptions — most by Trump. The commission has faced pressure from the Trump campaign to avoid changing the rules, while Biden’s team was hoping for a more ordered debate. In a statement, the commission said it “had determined that it is appropriate to adopt measures intended to promote adherence to agreed-upon rules and inappropriate to make changes to those rules.” 1115

President Donald Trump dug into his protectionist trade position on Friday, arguing that trade wars can be good and vowing to slap reciprocal tariffs on any goods even as his actions rattle markets and anger US allies. The tweets were a retrenchment of long-standing views on trade that Trump hopes will rally his base and spur job creation in the United States. But the views have worried investors -- markets opened sharply lower -- and even some of Trump's own advisers have resisted the harsh new actions."When a country (USA) is losing many billions of dollars on trade with virtually every country it does business with, trade wars are good, and easy to win," Trump wrote on Twitter early Friday.  715

President Donald Trump said Thursday that General Motors CEO Mary Barra made a "big mistake" by laying off thousands of workers and pledged to retaliate against the company. In a Fox News interview with Harris Faulkner, he said he was upset with GM's plan to restructure its global business, including halting production at five facilities in North America and eliminating about 14,000 jobs. He?lashed out against Barra, calling her actions "nasty.""To tell me a couple weeks before Christmas that she's going to close in Ohio and Michigan -- not acceptable to me," Trump said. "And she's either going to open fast or somebody else is going in. But General Motors is not going to be treated well."GM said in a statement Thursday that the company is focused on "our employees currently working at our impacted plants in Maryland, Michigan and Ohio."Trump's comments were only his latest in a string of highly unusual public attacks on the CEO of a major American corporation by a president.GM has said it closed plants and laid off workers to better prepare for the future. The company wants to shift production from sedans, which have fallen out of favor with Americans, to SUVs and trucks. It also wants to save money for the expensive task of inventing self-driving car technology. In a statement Thursday, GM said its "focus remains" on the employees at the plants that are closing, adding that hourly workers may be able to find jobs at other locations."We continue to produce great vehicles today for our customers while taking steps toward our vision of a world with zero crashes, zero emissions and zero congestion," the company said.Trump predicted Barra's actions to remake GM's business will fail."I think she's making a big mistake," Trump said. "They've changed the whole model of General Motors. ... I don't run a car company but all-electric is not going to work. It's wonderful to have it as a percentage of your cars but going into this model is not going to work."Trump's claim that GM has plans to stop making gasoline-powered engines isn't quite true. GM does not currently plan to go "all-electric," as Trump suggested, but Trump may not be far off. Auto industry experts believe self-driving cars will one day replace virtually all human-driven cars -- and those cars will require electric batteries to power the cars' on-board technology. He also claimed the new trade agreement between Canada, Mexico and the United States would make business difficult for GM. He criticized the company for making some of its vehicles and parts in Mexico, and he said the new USMCA agreement will remedy that."Now the new deal, the USMCA, that I made, really makes it very uncomfortable for people to go out of the country," Trump said. "And it will be very uncomfortable for them."The USMCA will require companies to pay about the same minimum wage to their employees in each of the USMCA countries, effectively requiring GM to give its Mexican workers a raise. That could reduce some of the advantages of building vehicles in Mexico, although GM has no plans to bring back production to the United States.Ultimately, Trump said, GM's job cuts won't hurt the US economy."It doesn't really matter because Ohio is under my leadership from a national standpoint," he said. "Ohio is going to replace those jobs in like two minutes." 3355

POWAY (CNS) - The second of two San Diego area ``Stop the Steal'' rallies will be held today in Poway from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to support President Donald Trump's claims that the Nov. 3 presidential election was marked by fraud.A similar rally was held Saturday at Waterford Park in San Diego to coincide with the ``Million MAGA March'' in Washington, D.C., and similar events nationwide.``So much love of country and our president. 2000+ in attendance,'' Tony P. Krvaric, the volunteer chairman of the Republican Party of San Diego tweeted Saturday after driving by Waterford Park during the rally. ``Law enforcement was there but had little to do as everyone behaved. No looting or destruction. Imagine that. #MAGA is here to stay.''Multiple media reports and election officials have found no evidence of widespread election fraud.Sunday's rally is set for 14969 Pomerado Road from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. 915

President Donald Trump had immigration on his mind Wednesday morning, firing off a collection of tweets praising his administration's efforts.Trump started by hailing a court ruling on Tuesday that allowed his border wall to proceed, but seemed to acknowledge that no actual construction on any new border barriers can begin until Congress authorizes funds."I have decided that sections of the Wall that California wants built NOW will not be built until the whole Wall is approved. Big victory yesterday with ruling from the courts that allows us to proceed. OUR COUNTRY MUST HAVE BORDER SECURITY!" Trump tweeted.   629
