SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Firefighters on alert after seeing the latest Wildland Fire Potential Outlook maps released by the National Interagency Fire Center. The maps show San Diego with an above average wildfire potential that increases from June through August and starts to wane slightly in September.Cal Fire Public Information Officer Thomas Shoots said the outlook focuses on three things; "We're dealing with fuel, weather and topography." Shoots said the agency can't do anything about the topography or weather, but every neighbor can do their part reducing fuel, especially around their home.RELATED: How to prepare defensible space around your homeShoots acknowledged the winter weather gave San Diego County a reprieve fire-wise, but it posed a new problem: new growth that's already drying out."A grass fire can run a lot faster and spread faster which means our resources are spread out quicker, and then that means it has the heat and momentum to build up to the bigger fuels," Shoots said.Just down the road, a neighbor had landscapers pruning her yard."I think it's very important to have this done...helps the whole neighborhood," said the woman named Gene.Cal Fire said the best time to get the landscaping work done is before 10 a.m. and after 4 p.m.Last week, neighbors in Rancho Santa Fe saw the danger become a reality when Cal Fire said a landscaping crew using the lawn mower sparked a 3-acre fire near Fairbanks Ranch."It's starting to get to the point where it's too late; we need you to clear while we have the chance," Shoots said, referring to hot weather making these incidents more likely."We need all the help we can get," he said."Definitely, they've got a lot of work ahead of them, I think," Gene said.Cal Fire reported this year to June 16th, there have been 1,386 fires, burning 11,954 acres across the state. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Details are beginning to emerge about the woman who was shot and killed inside a Church’s Chicken in the South Bay Wednesday night. Maribel Merino-Iba?ez, 28, was killed while working her shift at the Otay Mesa West restaurant. “I believe in God and I believe that one day justice will come his way and that won’t bring my daughter back, but I know that there will be justice for her,” said Emma Karla Merino, the victim’s mother. "I just want justice, because nobody can bring my sister back. Her body is gone, but she is here in my heart and she’s never going away,” said Gabriela Merino, the victim’s sister. Someone who knew Merino-Iba?ez told 10News she had worked at the Church’s Chicken for nine years and was a shift manager. A vigil is set to take place at the restaurant Friday at 6 p.m. Another victim was identified as Mario Rojas. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Governor Gavin Newsom said Friday that more than 670,000 doses of the new Moderna vaccine could be in the state as early as next week. Unlike the first Pfizer vaccine, it does not require ultra-low temperature freezers, so experts predict the rollout logistics will be much smoother. While the new vaccine is promising, the fight against the surge continues.The FDA's Emergency Use Authorization of Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine could not have come at a more dire time."[There has been a] 58% increase over the last 14 days, now over 3400 Californians [are] in our ICU's," Governor Gavin Newsom said in a social media COVID-19 update Friday.As more people get sick after Thanksgiving gatherings, space, staff, and resources in our hospital systems are dwindling. San Diego County's ICU capacity is now at 19%, while the Southern California region is 0%."When you see 0%, that doesn't mean there's no capacity, no one's allowed into an ICU," the Governor explained. "It means we are now in our surge phase, which is about 20% additional capacity that we can make available."Hospitals are now repurposing regular beds into ICU beds, postponing non-essential procedures, and moving around staff to accommodate the surge."We are still going to have accidents, unfortunately," Dr. Abisola Olulade with Sharp Rees Stealy said. "Someone may have the need for emergency surgery. All of these things don't go away just because we are in the middle of a pandemic."Dr. Olulade says while the Moderna vaccine rollout will undoubtedly help slow the surge, it is not the end-all-be-all."The vaccine is not going to help someone that is in the ICU now," Dr. Olulade explained. "It's really possibly not going to help for the next few months. It does take a while before you achieve herd immunity or when enough people have gotten the vaccine, and that could be several months."That is why, in the meantime, she believes it is vital that we continue to do our part in protecting ourselves and others."If past events are predictors of the future, then we can see that the upcoming holidays are a very risky time because we tend to see these numbers go up drastically after holiday celebrations," Dr. Olulade said.
