SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County health officials have reported 2,416 new COVID-19 infections and 11 new deaths, marking 107,372 total cases and 1,162 deaths.Sunday marked the fifth consecutive day that more than 2,000 new cases were reported, with 2,490 cases reported Saturday, 2,867 cases -- a record - - reported Friday, 2,050 reported Thursday and 2,104 Wednesday. It is also the 13th day with more than 1,000 new cases. It is just the sixth time the daily cases have crossed 2,000 -- all of which have come in the past week.Of 25,274 tests reported Saturday, 10% returned positive. The number of hospitalizations also continued to rise, with 39 people hospitalized and 11 patients put in intensive care units. The county's hospitals have 16% of their ICU beds available, down from 21% Thursday. The state now estimates the ICU bed availability in the 11- county Southern California region at 4.2%, down from 7.7% on Thursday. In the San Joaquin Valley, only 1.5% of ICU beds are available. The Greater Sacramento region has 15.1% of ICU beds available and the Bay Area has 16.7%, with Northern California at 29.0%The county has seen a 199% increase in COVID-19 related hospitalizations in the past 30 days and a 148% increase in ICU patients in the same time frame. The previous peak in hospitalizations, in mid-July, topped out around 400 patients.Seven new community outbreaks were reported Saturday. A community setting outbreak is defined as three or more COVID-19 cases in a setting and in people of different households over the past 14 days.Meanwhile, doses of the Pfizer vaccine began shipping out from a Michigan facility Sunday bound for Southern California distribution centers and other locations in the United States. The Naval Medical Center in San Diego and the Naval Hospital in Camp Pendleton should receive doses of the first coronavirus vaccine this week, the U.S. Department of Defense said.San Diego military officials could not be reached for comment on the exact timing of the vaccine's arrival at the two naval hospitals. The head of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control signed off on the recommendation of an advisory committee Sunday, officially permitting the vaccine to be administered in the United States. It is said to be 95% effective in preventing the coronavirus.Army Gen. Gustave Perna of Operation Warp Speed told reporters Saturday that UPS and FedEx would be delivering the vaccine to nearly 150 distribution centers across the country. 2485

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials Sunday reported 373 new cases of COVID-19 and no new deaths, bringing the county's totals to 52,355 and the death toll remaining at 853.Officials are imploring San Diegans to maintain vigilance as positive case rates for the coronavirus continue to increase in the region."We are now concerned about the trends and we are concerned about the likelihood we could tip back to purple, Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said on Twitter today. The county is now in the red tier and the limit for the next tier is seven cases per 100,000 residents.Fletcher pointed to positive unadjusted case rates over six days (Oct. 11-16): 6.9 out of 100,000 residents, to 7.2 to 7.3 to 7.4 to 7.7 and 7.8.The county will be in the red, or "substantial," tier for at least another two weeks. But Fletcher and Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten held an emergency meeting Friday to "sound the alarm" as the future case rate appears to cross into the purple tier of the state's four-tier reopening system. With the state's monitoring system having a seven-day lag, the adjusted case rate of positive COVID-19 tests is 6.8 per 100,000 residents, up from 6.5 in the previous assessment.Nearly all non-essential indoor businesses would close under the purple tier."We are still in the red tier, but it is too close for comfort," Wooten said. The California Department of Public Health will update the county's data Tuesday. One new community outbreak was confirmed Saturday in a business. In the past seven days, 32 community outbreaks were confirmed, well above the trigger of seven or more in a week's time.A community outbreak is defined as three or more COVID-19 cases in a setting and in people of different households over the past 14 days. The county uses community outbreaks to get a larger sense of the pandemic locally, but the state does not include the statistic in its weekly report.Wooten said 95% of the county's cases were not related to a marked community outbreak, a clear indicator the illness has spread throughout the county.A total of 12,233 tests were reported to the county Saturday and the percentage of new laboratory-confirmed cases was 3%.The 14-day rolling average percentage of positive cases is 2.7%. The target is less than 8%.The seven-day daily average of tests is 10,573.Of 3,763 positive cases -- or 7.2% -- have required hospitalization through Saturday.Of 870 -- or 1.7% -- of all cases had to be admitted to an intensive care unit. 2504

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The city of San Diego announced a partnership today with Verizon to improve the city's wireless capacity and begin the process of introducing 5G cellular network technology.Verizon will make an investment of more than 0 million in local technology infrastructure, such as the installation of wireless equipment cells on city-owned light poles, to extend internet coverage and capability and increase public safety. The company will also offer 500 smartphones to the San Diego Police Department and 50 tablets to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department to make their communication infrastructure more efficient."Together, we're creating a platform of innovation with the latest smart city technology, supporting the city's focus on creating a digitally inclusive and connected city that benefits all residents and businesses for decades to come,'' said Ed Chan, Verizon's senior vice president of engineering.Eventually, Verizon plans to roll out 5G technology in San Diego, which the city says will enhance the region's economic might. In turn, the city plans to streamline the tech infrastructure installation process by creating a master permit to make it easier for telecommunications companies to install fiber optic internet.San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Councilman Chris Cate joined Chan to announce the partnership and tout the city's present and future technological capabilities."San Diego is a city of innovation with a long history of using groundbreaking technologies to make our city and the world a better place,'' Faulconer said. "Working together with Verizon, this agreement is going to provide resources that will further enhance cellular service for residents, keep communities safer and lower costs for taxpayers.'' 1766

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council voted unanimously Monday to expand city-imposed curfews on five local parks in North Park, City Heights and near Balboa Park. The vote will establish a midnight-to-6 a.m. curfew at Cedar Ridge Mini Park, Montclair Neighborhood Park, North Park Community Park and North Park Mini Park and a 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew at City Heights Square Mini Park. The council added curfews to the five parks after residents expressed concerns about people breaking the law after-hours on park grounds. The city does not currently have a blanket park curfew, which would make it illegal to be in a park after a certain time, but many of the city's parks generally close at or some time after sunset. Multiple City Council members expressed concern that the curfews could unfairly target homeless residents. North Park, City Heights and areas adjacent to Balboa Park currently have a significant portion of the city's homeless population. "This is about trying to address legitimate public safety concerns," said City Councilman Chris Ward, who represents the district encompassing all five parks. "A huge focus of mine is to make sure that this is not inappropriately used to criminalize homelessness." With the vote, the five parks will join Children's Park, Gaslamp Square Park, Pantoja Park, the Children's Museum Park, Fault Line Park, Cortez Hill Park and the Spruce Street Pedestrian Bridge as public spaces with overnight curfews. 1473
