The federal convictions reached Thursday-- in a case investigated by the Oceanside Police Department -- trigger mandatory minimum sentences of 15 and ten years, respectively, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.According to evidence presented at trial, Smallwood-Jackson began communicating with the girl using the Spotafriend social media application. He admitted during chats with the victim -- whose profile listed her true age of 14 -- that he was 21 years old and didn't care that she was a minor.Using the internet, Smallwood-Jackson discussed sexual acts he wanted to perform with the girl and convinced her to produce and send him sexually explicit pictures and provide her address, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Mandy Griffith.The girl repeatedly told Smallwood-Jackson that she was not sure she wanted to meet with him, but he told her to take a "leap of faith." The defendant then traveled to her home, convinced her to come outside, and had sex with her, according to prosecutors.In texts afterward, Smallwood-Jackson apologized for hurting the minor victim. SAN DIEGO — Three teenagers were taken into custody in three separate attempts to smuggle fentanyl across the U.S.-Mexico border, according to federal officials.U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said the incidents occurred on March 30 and 31 at the San Ysidro Port of Entry near San Diego, California.On Friday, CBP agents stopped a 17-year-old Mexican citizen. After noticing an "anomaly" on the teen's back, agents conducted a pat down and found two packages strapped to his back. The packages contained four pounds of fentanyl — a street value of 1,000.The next day, CBP agents stopped two more male teens within 10 minutes of each other: a 17-year-old and a 15-year-old. Both were found to have packages of fentanyl strapped to their backs. The two combined were carrying about nine pounds of drugs, a street value of more than 6,000.The teens in each case were arrested and turned over to Homeland Security Investigations. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 28-year-old man who appeared to suffer some type of medical emergency and passed out after fighting with deputies arresting him at a North County convenience store last week died at a hospital, authorities reported Wednesday.Marco Napoles Rosales of El Monte was pronounced brain-dead Tuesday, six days after his violent encounter with law enforcement personnel, according to sheriff's officials. A ruling on his cause of death remains on hold pending an autopsy.The events that led to Rosales' confrontation with law enforcement personnel began about 4:30 a.m. last Thursday, when a 911 caller reported that he had been acting strangely in a Circle K market on state Route 76 in Fallbrook, seemed to be "under the influence of drugs" and was refusing to leave the business, Lt.
