SAN FRANCISCO, June 13 (Xinhua) -- Google on Monday confirmed that it had signed an agreement to buy Admeld, an on-line advertising optimization firm, in a deal seen as the Internet search giant's latest move to bolster its on-line display ad business.Admeld, launched in 2007 and headquartered in New York City, has developed a service that can help on-line publishers manage their ad space more efficiently and profitably.Admeld now has more than 500 customers worldwide, among them are FOX News, IDG TechNetwork, Discovery and The Weather Channel, according to information posted on its website."By combining Admeld's services, expertise and technology with Google's offerings, we're investing in what we hope will be an improved era of flexible ad management tools for major publishers, " Neal Mohan, Google's vice president of display advertising, said in a blog post announcing the deal."We believe that this investment will be an important step to help on-line publishers, and will further improve and grow the display advertising industry as a whole," Mohan noted.On-line display ads usually appear in forms that consist of images and may be interactive. According to the Interactive Advertising Bureau, a U.S. trade association, display-related on- line ad revenue in the United States totaled nearly 10 billion U.S. dollars in 2010.Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed by the two companies. JAKARTA, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- Comprehensive efforts are needed to save coral reefs as their living compound is prone to environmental damage, an Indonesian expert told Xinhua in an exclusive interview on Tuesday.Nurul Dhewani Mirah Sjafrie, coordinator of Coral Reef Information and Training Center (CRITC) for western Indonesia at the Indonesian Science Institute, the government think-tank institution, said that currently only more than five percent of coral reefs in Indonesia are in "excellent condition.""Based on monitoring of the thousands of observation stations we have, the rest are in damage, bad and moderate condition," Sjafrie said in her office.She said that it is not impossible to increase the number as long as all people are aware of the importance to save coral reefs."People should be aware that coral reefs live in sea with warm enough temperature of 18-25 Celsius degree with certain level of brightness, among others. If the requirements are fulfilled, we can see coral reef growing safely," said Sjafrie.She also said it needs upstream-to-downstream arrangement to support the efforts."For example, in western Indonesia, we have many big rivers. If illegal logging practice keeps continuing, it will cause sedimentation in the sea. It means there is a decreasing quality. LOS ANGELES, June 8 (Xinhua) -- NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity is heading toward "Spirit Point" on the rim of a large crater, a long-term destination that the rover has been trying to reach for nearly three years, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) announced on Wednesday.Opportunity has moved toward the crater, Endeavour, since climbing out of Victoria crater in August 2008.Having driven 11 miles (18 kilometers), the rover has about two miles (about three kilometers) to go before reaching the rim of Endeavour, said JPL in Pasadena, Los Angeles.Rover team members last week selected "Spirit Point" as the informal name for the site on the rim where Opportunity will arrive at Endeavour crater. The choice commemorates Opportunity's rover twin, Spirit, which has ended communication and finished its mission."Spirit achieved far more than we ever could have hoped when we designed her," said Steve Squyres of Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, principal investigator for the rovers. "This name will be a reminder that we need to keep pushing as hard as we can to make new discoveries with Opportunity. The exploration of Spirit Point is the next major goal for us to strive for."Endeavour offers the setting for plenty of productive work by Opportunity. The crater is 14 miles (22 kilometers) in diameter -- more than 20 times wider than Victoria crater, which Opportunity examined for two years. Orbital observations indicate that the ridges along its western rim expose rock outcrops older than any Opportunity has seen so far. Spirit Point is at the southern tip of one of those ridges, "Cape York," on the western side of Endeavour.Opportunity and Spirit completed their three-month prime missions on Mars in April 2004. Both rovers continued for years of bonus, extended missions.
