ATLANTA — The funeral for the late civil rights icon and congressman John Lewis will be held Thursday at Atlanta’s historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, which the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. once led. As Tropical Storm Laura began setting its sights on Puerto Rico, and eventually, the Florida coast, Tropical Storm Marco formed late Friday.Marco has top winds of 40 MPH, but is expected to gain strength by the time it reaches the Gulf of Mexico. As of late Friday, however, the storm is not forecast to reach hurricane strength.The storm is then expected to head for the Texas or Louisiana coast.In the meantime, Marco is expected to hit Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula this weekend.Tropical Storm Laura is also headed toward the Gulf of Mexico, but instead of approaching from the South like Marco, Laura is coming from the east.Laura has top winds of 45 MPH as of late Friday. Before reaching the Gulf of Mexico, it is expected to skirt Puerto Rico and Hispaniola and Florida.The combination of Marco and Laura could cause havoc for emergency managers next week. ATLANTA, Ga. – UPS expects to hire more than 100,000 seasonal employees to support the anticipated increase in packages during the holiday season.The company announced Wednesday that its filling full-time and part-time seasonal positions, primarily package handlers, drivers, driver-helpers, and personal vehicle drivers.“We’re preparing for a record peak holiday season. AZUSA (CNS) - A homeless man suspected of intentionally starting the Ranch 2 Fire in Azusa surrendered to authorities Sunday, while firefighters endured another day battling the blaze amid scorching temperatures.The fire, which grew to 2,256 acres overnight, was just 7% contained Sunday.The man suspected of intentionally starting the fire, 36-year-old Osmin Palencia, was in custody at the Azusa Police Department jail. Police did not release further information except to say that the investigation was still active, and urged anyone with information about the fire's origin to call 626- 812-3200.On Saturday, police said Palencia was believed to have a connection to the Monrovia area and possibly a woman known as "Madonna Ortiz." They added he is violent and has multiple active arrest warrants.Palencia also had four misdemeanor arrests over the last two years, three by Azusa police and one by sheriff's deputies, according to jail records.Palencia's last known residence is an encampment in the Azusa Canyon Riverbed, police said.A witness who lives in a riverbed near Mountain Cove told NBC4 an argument between two homeless men sparked the fire."There were two gentlemen in the back (of a homeless encampment) fighting and they were arguing over a bike and one guy said he'd burn the other guy out, and things got escalated to where the fire started," evacuee Jimmy Pockets told the station. As scientists learn more about COVID-19, they are realizing that how people react to the virus could be based on the body's response to viruses like common colds.Meharry Medical College President Dr. James Hildreth says some studies are showing some individuals have T-cell responses to COVID-19 even though they never been exposed to it.He is talking about recent research revealing that some people may have immunity defenders called T-cells which could determine how their body reacts to COVID-19.According to the CDC, when the body fights an infection, the immune system remembers what it learned about how to protect the body against that disease.The body will retain a few specific T-cells known as memory cells - that will alert and help the immune system identify and produce antibodies to attack the foreign germ if it enters the body again."Viruses that look alike can sometimes elicit the same kinds of immune responses," said Hildreth.Hildreth says there are six strains of coronavirus that affect humans going back to the 1960s and some result in seasonal common colds.He says if you were infected with one of these viruses in the past it can determine the severity of the toll COVID-19 would take on your body now."There’s the possibility that a response to one of them gives you a partial to another because they have genetic similarities," said Hildreth.Hildreth says this doesn't mean a person has complete immunity to COVID-19."There’s strong evidence that you may not be immune to the virus, but you’ll have an immune response that recognizes SARS partially just because those two viruses look so much alike."Hildreth says this can help with treatments and even vaccinesThis story was originally reported by Kelsey Gibbs at WTVF. 1756
