SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police Sunday identified a 24-year-old man who was fatally wounded in a shooting in Emerald Hills on Wednesday.The victim was identified as Gai Wal, who died of his wounds in the early morning on Friday, according to Lt. Matt Dobbs of the San Diego Police Department.At 5:51 p.m. Wednesday, police received a ShotSpotter activation in the area of 6100 Imperial Ave. It was soon followed by a second ShotSpotter activation near 6300 Imperial Ave. The SpotShotter is a device used by police to locate and alert whenever it detects the sound of gunshots.When patrol officers arrived on the scene, they found a man down in the parking lot of a business with an apparent gunshot wound to his upper body, Dobbs said.The officers rendered aid to the man, who was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, the lieutenant said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The name of the 46-year-old Ramona resident killed in a predawn shooting in his hometown was released by authorities today.A resident of the 600 block of Pine Street in the rural community southeast of Escondido heard a gunshot and found Mario Velazquez Cardoso mortally wounded in front of a neighboring home about 5:45 a.m. Thursday, according to sheriff's officials.Paramedics took Cardoso to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.An arrest has not been made in the killing, sheriff's Lt. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The founder and former CEO of a San Diego startup pleaded guilty Wednesday to a federal wire fraud charge for stealing more than .5 million from his own company.Jeffrey Fildey, 56, of Las Vegas, created GoFormz Inc. -- which provides online mobile forms and reporting products -- and began illegally taking money from the company sometime around late 2015 and continued to do so through August 2017, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.U.S. Attorney Robert S. Brewer said, Fildey "abused a position of trust to brazenly steal company assets, treating GoFormz Inc. as his own private slush fund."Prosecutors say Fildey obtained loans -- supposedly for the company -- then kept the funds for himself, paid for personal expenditures on company credit cards, received cash advances for himself on company credit cards and took money directly from the company's bank account.A U.S. Attorney's Office statement announcing the plea cited examples that included a 6,250 loan he obtained for the company, which he immediately wired from the firm's bank account to his personal bank account. The U.S. Attorney's Office said GoFormz made payments on the loan while he spent the money on personal expenses.The U.S. Attorney's Office said Fildey took three unauthorized loans on behalf of the company and transferred the funds to his bank account each time, withdrew more than 0,000 in cash from the company's bank account for his personal use and made more than ,600 in unauthorized purchases on the corporate credit card.The company lost ,544,147 as a result, according to the plea agreement.Sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 9. 1658

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council voted 5-4 today to extend the city's moratorium on commercial and residential evictions until the end of September amid high unemployment rates during the coronavirus pandemic. The moratorium that was slated to expire Wednesday will be extended to Sept. 30 as a result of the council's vote. Council members Georgette Gomez, Monica Montgomery, Jennifer Campbell, Chris Ward and Vivian Moreno voted in favor, while Barbara Bry, Mark Kersey, Scott Sherman and Chris Cate voted no.The moratorium prohibits landlords from evicting renters and small businesses that are unable to cover their rent or lease payments due to financial hardship brought about by the COVID-19 outbreak.Under the moratorium, renters and small businesses cannot be evicted if they notify their landlord in writing, on or before the day the rent is due, that they are unable to pay. They have one week after notification to provide proof that their financial hardship is related to the COVID-19 pandemic.Landlords and tenants are encouraged to work out a payment plan on their own. The eviction ban first went into effect March 25, with Tuesday's vote marking its second extension.The vote came following about two hours of public comment, in which numerous residents called in to ask for the council to extend the moratorium, with some asking for an extension until as far as the end of the year.The council was also slated to take action Tuesday to establish a rental assistance program, funded by more than million in federal COVID-19 relief funds. 1578
