SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A kitchen fire caused an estimated million in damage at a popular South Park restaurant/bar early Wednesday morning.San Diego Fire-Rescue Department officials said crews were called to Hamilton's Tavern & Cafe, located on 1531 30th Street, at around 5:30 a.m. in response to a fire in the establishment’s kitchen area.ABC 10News learned flames burned into the bar’s dining hall and caused some damage to part of a brewery next door.Hamilton’s owner Scott Blair said, “The first thing I thought is I hope everyone’s OK … you’re just like, I hope everyone’s ok because a neighborhood of people living in that building.”As nearby residents were evacuated, crews were able to knock down the flames within 25 minutes, SDFD officials said.Due to the heavy damage to the kitchen, it is believed Hamilton’s Tavern may not be able to operate for the next few months.The restaurant/bar has been shut down since July and was operating out of its sister brewery because it was larger. Hamilton’s had just started operating outdoors this past weekend due to San Diego County being moved into the state’s restrictive COVID-19 purple tier.According to Blair, the kitchen was their lifeline to stay open. With it completely destroyed they’re unsure where they go from here.“The pandemic has been a nightmare,” Blair told ABC 10News. “It’s gonna take more than this to hang it up. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Point Loma woman says while her family was sleeping, someone was in her home stealing from them.Tucked away on a hill along scenic La Crescentia Drivel, the serenity was interrupted when Teresa Cesear and her husband got up around 5 a.m. Wednesday."Panic, absolutely panic," said Cesear.Cesear says her purse and laptop bag — computer inside — were not where she had placed them on her kitchen stool.Reality quickly set in. Those items didn't disappear on their own. "My entire personal and work life were in those two bags. Then came the fear and sense of violation," said Cesear.The violation happened quietly as she, her husband, and her grown son slept."The police said that they must have looked in the window. There's a nightlight in the kitchen, so they see my laptop and purse and somehow got this locked kitchen door open," said Cesear.Among the missing items were credit cards, keys and one special key: The original key to her 1973 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia."Really sad ... It's an important part of it because it's a very unique key," said Cesear.The break-in is the second burglary in her cul-de-sac in the past few months. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new technology platform launched this week is making it easier for restaurants, hotels, and caterers to donate food to those facing hunger in San Diego County.The new platform, MealConnect, was unveiled by Feeding San Diego. CEO Vince Hall says the free platform will help rescue the more than 14 million pounds of food going into San Diego landfills every year. "This is an issue that is compelling, it is serious, and it is urgent because hunger is debilitating," said Hall. Restaurants and food service providers use the MealConnect app to submit a food donation. It's then picked up by a volunteer and delivered to a nearby charity. Nancy Kane is one of the first San Diego volunteers to take part in the program. "It's flexible, it's not that hard to do, I can do it on my own time. I love it; it's one more thing I can do to make a difference," said Kane.Volunteers receive training and equipment to ensure food is delivered safely. They can choose their delivery hours and can accept or decline requests via text message. MealConnect enables food donors of all sizes, such as hotels, meeting and event planners, restaurants, farmers market vendors, and convenience stores to post surplus food to the system.Feeding San Diego received a ,500 grant from the Walmart Foundation to support the launch of MealConnect in San Diego County. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man was hospitalized after being shot as he sat in his car at a Southcrest park, San Diego police said.The incident happened just before 11:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 4100 block of Newton Avenue, according to police.The 26-year-old victim and a 19-year-old man were sitting in a BMW when two men walked up to the car. Police said the two men pounded on the car’s windows before they opened fire.The victim was shot in the left thigh and left wrist, police said. The 19-year-old was not hurt.The victim drove the bullet-riddled BMW away from the park and called 911 to report the shooting. Police made contact with the BMW on National Avenue and the victim was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.According to police, the suspected shooters are believed to have fled the park in a white pickup truck. Twelve shell casings were recovered at the scene, police added.Descriptions of the two suspected shooters were not immediately available. 984
