BEIJING, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- Premier Wen Jiabao on Friday urged young Chinese and Africans to remember the traditional friendship and work together to promote Sino-African relations.     "I hope young people from China and African countries will learn from each other and help each other, treat differences with an open mind, and contribute your wisdom and strength to building the strategic China-Africa partnership," Wen said.     He made the remarks while addressing the opening ceremony of the third China-Africa Youth Festival and a farewell ceremony for young Chinese volunteers departing for Africa. Wen on Friday attended the opening ceremony of the third China-Africa Youth Festival and a farewell ceremony for young Chinese volunteers departing for Africa.    The festival, originally proposed by Wen at the second China-Africa Cooperation Ministerial Conference in Ethiopia in December 2003, has become a platform for China-Africa exchanges.     "Young people bear the hope of a nation and they also shoulder the future of a friendly China-Africa relationship," Wen said, expressing his hope young people would fulfill their historic responsibilities and create better conditions for friendship development.     The Chinese government decided in 2006 to send 300 young volunteers to Africa to work in medical, agricultural, sports and educational field.     Wen encouraged the volunteers to serve the African people with their knowledge and skills, win their friendship and trust, and learn from them.     More than 750 guests, including youth delegates from 49 African countries, attended the ceremony.

LAS VEGAS, the United States, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- A record number of Chinese businesses and manufacturers are participating in the annual exhibition of Chinese products in the United States, in a way to show their confidence in the U.S. market and American consumers, a senior Chinese official said here on Monday.     Inaugurating the "China Brand Show 2009" in the Las Vegas International Convention Center, Vice Minister of Commerce Zhong Shan said the Chinese government pays much attention to the difficulties its economy is facing amid the global financial crisis.     "Ever since November last year, the Chinese foreign trade has been going down for a consecutive nine months, which complies with the world trade situation in general," said the official.     Stressing that both China and the United States are each other's essential trading partner, Zhong said that the two countries had committed to open more to trade and investment and fight protectionism at the recent China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogue, held in Washington, D.C. in July.     On China's domestic efforts to tackle the global economic recession, Zhong said the government has rolled out a huge economic stimulus package, and China's stabilizing and promising economic trend has contributed to the global confidence in an early economic recovery.     "China's GDP enjoyed a 7.1-percent growth in the first half of 2009, bringing the economic slump starting from the fourth quarter last year to an end," said the vice minister.     According to organizers of the annual show, more than 200 enterprises from China are participating this year, to showcase their products during the three-day event that ends on Wednesday.     The show also serves as a promotion event for the 106th China Import and Exports Fair, to be held in Guangzhou from Oct. 12 to Nov. 4 this year, officials said.     The China Import and Export Fair, the country's number one trade fair, has become a platform for enterprises from different countries to do business and one of the key channels for foreign companies to enter the Chinese market.

BUDAPEST, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- China wants to achieve balanced trade with Hungary by way of increased economic and trade cooperation, visiting Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping said here Friday.     At a symposium with Hungarian and Chinese entrepreneurs, Xi said the two countries should further expand trade and find more complementary products for export.     "We will continue to encourage our enterprises to import more from Hungary, and also hope Hungarian companies will make greater efforts to explore the Chinese market and increase exports of those products that meet market demand in China," Xi said.  Visiting Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping(L) meets with Hungarian Prime Minister Gordon Bajnai(R) in Budapest, capital of Hungary, Oct. 16, 2009    Xi also called on enterprises of the two countries to enhance cooperation in such areas as new energy, insurance, tourism and environmental protection.     He said the two sides should give full play to the role of the joint economic committee as a platform for consultation and properly handle trade disputes that may arise, so as to ensure smooth development of bilateral economic and trade cooperation.     Hungary is a good friend and partner of China, and China is ready to work with the East European country to strengthen their communication and cooperation and push forward bilateral trade and economic ties and the China-EU comprehensive strategic partnership, he said.     Hungarian Prime Minister Gordon Bajnai said bilateral trade and economic cooperation had expanded rapidly and Xi's attendance at the symposium demonstrated the importance China attaches to its trade relations with Hungary.     He said China plays an important role in the global economy and Hungary welcomes Chinese enterprises to seek business and invest in the country.     More than 200 business people and officials from the two countries attended the symposium.

RIGA, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu met with Latvian President Valdis Zatlers and Parliament Speaker Gundars Daudze here on Tuesday.     In his meeting with Zatlers, Hui said the China-Latvia relations have been developing smoothly in recent years. The two sides have maintained high-level contacts and strengthened mutual political trust. There has also been remarkable progress in economic and trade cooperation and people-to-people contacts.     President Zatlers visited China last year and reached important consensus with Chinese President Hu Jintao on the development of bilateral relations, said Hui.     The current visit is aimed at implementing the consensus reached last year, deepening friendship and promoting cooperation, he said.     The two sides should work together in face of the current global financial crisis, and should also look even farther and further promote cooperation, he said. BEIJING, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), the world's biggest lender by market value, posted a profit after tax of 66.7 billion yuan (9.77 billion U.S. dollars) in the first half of this year, up 2.8 percent over the same period last year.     The increase was mainly attributed to gains on incomes from the bank's intermediate business, including investment banking business and fund dealing commission, which grew 17 percent from ayear earlier to stand at 28.3 billion yuan, according to the bank's half-year report released Thursday.     Outstanding loans amounted to 5.44 trillion yuan by the end of June, jumping 18.9 percent from the beginning of this year in response to the country's economic stimulus plan.     The non-performing rate was 1.81 percent by June, 0.48 percentage points lower than at the beginning of 2009, as outstanding bad loans decreased 5.8 billion yuan after the bank intensified risks control.     At the end of June 2009, the bank's deposits increased 1.69 trillion yuan from the beginning of the year, leaving its outstanding deposits exceeding 10 trillion yuan.     The total assets of ICBC stood at 11.4 trillion yuan by the end of June, up 17.2 percent from the end of last year.     Earnings per share for the bank amounted to 0.2 yuan and the bank's stock advanced 3.26 percent to end at 4.75 yuan in Shanghai Stock Exchange Thursday. ICBC was simultaneously listed in Shanghai and Hong Kong in October 2006.
