GUANGZHOU, July 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping has praised Guangdong's pioneer role in the 30-year reform and opening drive and urged the south China province to continue promote cooperation with Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions (SARs).     Guangdong played the role as a window, laboratory and pioneer in the construction and development of socialism with Chinese characteristics, said Xi during a study tour of the south China province on July 4 and 5.     Xi, a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, visited towns, enterprises, communities, ports and research institutions, with Guangdong Party chief Wang Yang and governor Huang Huahua.     Xi hailed Guangdong's economic and social development, highlighting the fact that only socialism could save China, only the reforms and opening up to the outside world could develop China, socialism and Marxism. Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping (L Front) talks with a worker at Weiming company in Shenzhen, south China's Guangdong Province, July 5, 2008He paid special attention to the issue of Guangdong's cooperation with Hong Kong and Macao.     With some Hong Kong-funded companies suffering from the decrease of overseas consumer demand and price hikes of oil and raw materials, Xi asked local officials to give assistance.     Greater Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao cooperation and the development of the SARs' economies were of great significance for maintaining a long-term prosperity and stability in Hong Kong and Macao, and the success of the "One Country, Two Systems" policy, and eventually achieving national reunification, he said.     Xi urged Guangdong to open up to cooperation with Hong Kong and Macao, by strictly following the "One Country, Two Systems" policy and the basic laws of the two SARs.     Xi called for implementation of instructions by President Hu Jintao on the development of the Party.     China must adopt the concept of scientific, coordinated and harmonious development, said Xi.

BEIJING, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- President Hu Jintao and other Chinese leaders including top legislator Wu Bangguo and Premier Wen Jiabao on Tuesday visited an exhibition which pays tribute to victims of the May earthquake in Sichuan Province and the nation's concerted efforts to assist the disaster-stricken areas.     Photos and videos showing the aftermath of the catastrophic earthquake, as well as items that were used to rescue victims drew attentions of the leaders.     They were also briefed on how the people from all walks of life had made donations and contributions to help the earthquake-stricken areas recover from the country's worst disaster in the past 30 years. Chinese President Hu Jintao visits an exhibition featuring the rescue work on the May 12 earthquake that hit southwest China's Sichuan Province, in Beijing, capital of China, Oct. 7, 2008    Carrying on the great spirit displayed in the quake rescue and relief efforts, the nation would be able to overcome all difficulties on its way of development, Hu said during his visit.     State and Communist Party leaders Jia Qinglin, Li Changchun, XiJinping, Li Keqiang, He Guoqiang and Zhou Yongkang also visited the exhibition at the Military Museum of the Chinese People's Revolution in Beijing.     The exhibition, which featured pictures and objects collected in the quake, aimed to serve as a lively lesson to promote patriotism and the selfless spirit displayed in the quake-relief work.     It has received more than 300,000 visitors since it was opened on Sept. 20.     The exhibition was jointly sponsored by the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, the National Development and Reform Commission and the General Political Department of the People's Liberation Army.     On May 12, a quake measuring 8.0 on the Richter Scale struck Wenchuan County in the southwestern Sichuan Province. The quake, which has left more than 80,000 dead or missing, was the deadliest and strongest tremor to hit China since the 1976 Tangshan earthquake.

  

BEIJING, April 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and other senior leaders took part in a voluntary tree planting activity at the Olympic Forest Park here on Saturday.     China's top legislator Wu Bangguo, Premier Wen Jiabao, top political advisor Jia Qinglin, as well as Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, He Guoqiang, and Zhou Yongkang also planted trees at the park next to the national stadium, the main venue of the Beijing Olympic Games.     Covering some 680 hectares in the north of Beijing, the park is a major part of the 2008 Olympics infrastructure, which is expected to improve the city's environment and air quality.     Hu said during the activity that the Beijing Olympics and Paralympics are approaching. He urged Beijingers to support the Green Olympics initiative and make the city greener and more beautiful before athletes from worldwide come in August. However, many have acknowledged that the city has done much to improve its air quality.     This is the fifth time since 2001 for top leaders to take part in planting at the park, where nearly 500,000 trees have been planted.     Hu said voluntary tree planting is an effective way to get everyone involved in improving the environment. "For every tree we plant today, we gain another spot of green in the future," he said.     About 2 million Beijingers took part in planting activities in the capital on Saturday, which is Beijing's 24th voluntary tree planting day.
