SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Roughly 55 million Americans are getting ready to travel for Thanksgiving weekend, leaving behind millions of empty homes. Luckily, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department has a program to ensure San Diegans have peace of mind leaving their homes behind. The department offers free vacation checks year-round. From there, Senior Volunteer Patrol members keep a watchful eye of homes while residents are away. About 34,000 homes and businesses received 48 hours' notice of the possible shut-off to lower the hazard posed by power lines, according to SDG&E. The utility company issued two additional notices Thursday and downgraded the number of affected customers to about 18,000 at 4:45 p.m."Notifications are made via multiple channels: outbound dialer calls, text messages, and emails. Varner said she and her kitchen staff have to be smart about perishables in case the power goes out. “We actually don’t have a generator, so we have been kind of trying to prepare just by not overstocking any of our food or slicing perishables that will go bad,” Varner said. Like many others, he was at the pump filling up his gas can for his backup generator at home. Despite the per gallon cost, Desena gladly filled up, saying it's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. "Gotta have it. What’s another few cents? You know?" Desena said. "You have to make sure that it [the generator] is working so that we have some power. Get us through this little event. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer said Thursday that the city is expected to see a major decline in tax revenue due to the coronavirus. Faulconer said the city usually takes in an estimated 0 million in sales tax throughout the fiscal year. This year, however, the city is expected to lose million in sales tax alone. Similarly, Faulconer added that the city could lose as much as million in tourism tax. The news comes the day after the famous Hotel del Coronado announced its closure amid the COVID-19 pandemic. "We have been saving for a rainy day. This is a hurricane," Faulconer said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Police are investigating after a 12-year-old skateboarder was hit by a car in Mira Mesa Monday night. According to police, the crash happened on Reagan Road near Calico Street before 6:30 p.m. Police say the 12-year-old was taken to the hospital with major head injuries. Traffic is closed in the area as police continue to investigate. At this time, the circumstances surrounding the crash are unclear. 442

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Rideshare drivers all over California are on strike protesting recent pay cuts by both Uber and Lyft. A small but vocal group of the drivers gathered at the San Diego airport Monday morning, opting to take part in a statewide protest against the companies they say are taking money out of their pockets. Recently, Uber announced it would be cutting drivers wage from 80 cents per mile to 60 cents. Workers say that’s on top of other cuts they’ve dealt with over the years. Drivers who spoke with 10News say other states like New York require companies to pay a minimum rate of more than per hour. Uber and Lyft both issued statements after the protest.Uber said in part, “…we're introducing a new Quest promotion feature, while also changing the per minute, per mile and minimum fare rates. These changes will make rates comparable to where they were in September."Lyft told 10News: "We are always open to conversations around how we can make Lyft better for drivers, but what we hear from the majority is that this is a flexible option that works for them." 1090
