UPDATE (3 p.m. ET): Kentucky police are looking for a driver that hit two brothers crossing a busy intersection to get to their bus stop, authorities say.The 11-year-old and 13-year-old were struck at around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday in Louisville, Kentucky.It was at least the sixth time in three days that children were hurt or worse at a bus stop. (KGTV) - An unscheduled Veterans Day tribute played out at a cemetery in the North County.More than a week ago, local florist Jenelle Brinneman learned Valley Center's annual Veterans Day program had been canceled by COVID-19, including a ceremony at Valley Center Cemetery.She started raising money online and during her flower deliveries. In the end, she raised enough to place roses at the graves of hundreds of veterans."We have over 300 veterans that laid to rest here and we just wanted to make sure they are remembered," said Brinneman.Donors could nominate veterans for rose bouquets. One of those donors was the family of Robert Cronin, an Army veteran who fought in World War II in France and Germany. He passed away in 1992 at the age of 83."It means a lot to me to have him honored because he was a special part of our lives," said granddaughter Francesca Pappagallo.She says Cronin earned numerous medals, including the Legion of Merit for inventing a slide rule tool to increase the accuracy of cannons. Loved ones thought his rank was 'Colonel,' but after he passed away, a different truth emerged."They did a lot of research and he was actually a retired one-star General. Veterinarians are seeing an alarming increase in the number of cases of the canine parvovirus.Nationally, Blue Pearl pet hospitals report a 70 percent increase of the virus compared to statistics collected the previous five years.While an exact reason for the spike has yet to be determined, veterinarians suspect the coronavirus pandemic can shoulder some of the blame.“If people are staying home and have strict stay at home orders, probably vet visits aren’t the first thing on their minds,” said Dr. Lenore Bacek with Blue Pearl. “Financially, some people took a large hit to their normal finances during this time and routine vaccines weren’t a priority.”She added that people may be taking their newly adopted puppies to dog parks before they are fully vaccinated.Parvovirus is highly contagious because it can live on surfaces like grass or blankets for months and years.“Just assume it’s in the environment and don’t take your puppy somewhere other dogs have been,” Dr. Bacek said.Symptoms of the virus include vomiting and diarrhea, fever, abdominal pain, decreased appetite, weakness and weight loss.Dogs can’t pass the virus to humans. However, the increase of parvovirus cases could mean other important vaccines are being neglected.“We worry if they are not getting parvo vaccines, are we missing things like rabies vaccines, which could have a public health implication?” Dr. Bacek said.Puppies are most at risk, but the virus can also impact adult dogs. Veterinarians recommend adults receive a booster vaccine every three years.If a dog falls ill, they can face expensive treatment.“With aggressive treatment, hospitalization, IV fluid therapy, supportive care, the survival rate is high, close to 90 percent,” Dr. Bacek said.However, the financial and emotional toll of a dog getting sick can be avoided with proper vaccines.“We want to make sure as the first wave continues and second waves comes, that vets are seen as an important factor in public health,” Dr. Bacek said.KSTU's John Franchi was first to report this story. 2051

Update, Aug. 8, 10:15 a.m. The victim's fiancee notified 10News of his death Wednesday night, saying "Steven Johnson went on to be a hero to save other lives."LAKESIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - Loved ones are making a gut-wrenching plea for tips after a hit-and-run crash that left a man on life support, days before his wedding day."I don't know what to do without him," said Sami Johnson, the daughter of Steven Johnson"I'm heartbroken. He was my everything," said Karlene Moen, Johnson's fiancee.Johnson - a father of six and a grandfather - was riding his motorcycle to work at a Lakeside trucking company Friday when he crashed around 5:30 a.m. on southbound Highway 67 just past Willows Road. His first call was to his fiancee."He sounded hurt. He sounded scared, and he was pissed off," said Moen.He posted photos of his injured leg on Facebook. He told Moen a woman in a car cut him off, causing him to crash."He said, 'We locked eyes. She knows I was there ... She just left me and left me laying in the road,'" said Moen. Soon after the accident, he developed chest pains. He was rushed into surgery with a torn aorta. On Sunday morning, Johnson went into cardiac arrest. He was revived but suffered severe brain damage. He was placed on life support. Moen says the he will be taken off life support in the coming days, and his organs will be donated.His wedding planned for Saturday will now be a 'Celebration of Life' service."He'll never see me in my wedding dress that I bought especially for him," said a tearful Moen.She's hoping the driver that caused the crash will be identified.We just want justice. We want her to know she killed him and left him there," said Moen."Who could leave my dad in the road? TWIN LAKES, Colo. -- Riley Tinkham has done something very special with his dad's prized Porsche.He inherited the 1982 model when his father, Richard, died of complications from cancer in 2016. The car had been sitting in a garage for several years, so Tinkham fixed it up.Earlier this summer he took the car and parked it in front of his house in Twin Lakes, Colorado.
