Enrollment in public schools nationwide has gone down during the pandemic. According to data obtained by Chalkbeat and The Associated Press, enrollment dipped by about 2% since last year.Experts say several factors are to blame. Many students struggled to attend classes online, so they have been expelled from school for missing too many days. Also, kindergarten isn't required in some states.Surprisingly though, remote learning is more popular among parents than originally thought, according to a Pew survey.That's not to say all parents are on-board with virtual learning. In the grand scope, more parents prefer in-person instruction.Educators are more dissatisfied with virtual learning. About two thirds of teachers said students weren't prepared for grade-level work because of distanced learning.They also said students who were fully remote were completing less of their assignments and were absent more often. Teachers also reported high levels of stress and burnout.In a separate study by RAND Corporation, a nonprofit research organization, superintendents said they'd like to keep virtual schooling as an option after the pandemic.“The reasons the superintendents said they wanted to keep online schools after the pandemic really related to parental demand, so they cited reasons like retaining student enrollment in their district. Enrollment is the way that districts get funding and also the benefits of offering more choices to students and parents,” said Heather Schwartz, PK-12 Program Director and Senior Policy Researcher at RAND Corporation.The survey also found lower-income students are suffering the most during this time.“Low-income students are likely to attend schools that are fully remote during the pandemic than upper- and middle-income students. And it's the lower income parents on the surveys who are more concerned about their children falling behind academically during the pandemic,” said Schwartz.Lower income students are less likely to have the devices and internet access necessary for online learning.While there are some resources to help lower income families, researchers at RAND Corporation are making a recommendation. They want to see the federal government develop open-source curriculum materials that are of high quality and specifically for online instruction. 2323

(KGTV) -- Neighbors in an Escondido neighborhood are worried after they say dozens of tires were slashed overnight Saturday.The incidents reportedly happened on 4th Avenue and 2nd Avenue between Date and Elm Streets.Residents on 4th Avenue reported waking up Sunday morning to find that at least 11 vehicles had their tires slashed.Similarly, residents on 2nd avenue reported that nearly 30 vehicles had slashed tires.Police said they have been made aware of the incidents but it’s unclear if they have a suspect or will be investigating.Imagine waking up and finding your tires slashed, then finding out it happened to DOZENS more on your block. ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) -- Video from a witness shows a driver slamming into a crowd outside an Encinitas bar early Sunday morning. In the video, a U-Haul van can be seen accelerating onto a sidewalk. Video shows pedestrians leaping out of the way before the vehicle crashes into the crowd. In a Monday news release, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department said one person is in an intensive care unit while another is undergoing surgery with serious injuries following the crash. The department says a 24-year-old victim is in an intensive care unit while a 25-year-old is in surgery with serious injuries. All three of the victims were struck when the suspect, Christian Davis, 28, reportedly drove the van onto a sidewalk outside The Saloon Bar around 1:30 a.m. Sunday. Two others received minor injuries when they detained Davis outside the bar. Deputies say Davis was asked to leave the bar because he was too intoxicated. After complying with the request, deputies say Davis got into the van, intentionally driving it onto the sidewalk. Davis was later arrested and is being charged with three counts of attempted murder and one count of attempted escape with force. Davis is scheduled to be arraigned in Vista on March 3. ESCANABA, Mich. (AP) — A bald eagle launched an aerial assault on a drone operated by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy — which is known as EGLE — ripping off a propeller and sending the aircraft into Lake Michigan. The department says the attack happened July 21, when the drone was mapping shoreline erosion near Escanaba in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Drone pilot Hunter King says he had completed about seven minutes of the mapping flight when satellite reception became spotty and the drone began to twirl. King and two birdwatchers saw the eagle flying away, apparently unhurt. Tracking data indicates the drone landed in the lake, about 150 feet offshore. It has not been found. 723
