SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A former U.S. Navy captain and two chief petty officers were indicted in San Diego Friday on charges they allegedly received cash bribes, lavish hotel suites and the services of prostitutes from a foreign defense contractor and allegedly reciprocated by using their influence within the Navy's Seventh Fleet to approve inflated invoices from the contractor.Retired U.S. Navy Capt. David Williams Haas, 50, faces charges of conspiracy to commit bribery, bribery and conspiracy to commit honest services fraud. He allegedly received at least 5,000 in bribes from defense contractor Leonard Francis, who plied him with parties at luxurious hotels, prostitutes, top-shelf booze and food, according to indictments handed down by a federal grand jury.RELATED: 783
SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 16-year-old boy was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries he sustained in a stabbing attack in the Egger Highlands area.The victim and a friend were in the 1500 block of Thermal Avenue at 10:30 p.m. Friday when a dark-colored vehicle pulled up next to them and two suspects got out of the back and began fighting with the victim, according to Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department.The suspects threw a bottle at the victim and stabbed him in the hip, then jumped back in the vehicle, which was last seen southbound on Thermal Avenue, Heims said.The boy was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Heims said.A detailed description of the suspects was not available. 737
SALEM, Ore. – Authorities responding to a hostage situation in Oregon found three people dead from gunshot wounds in an Oregon home Monday.The Marion County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release that its deputies responded to the hostage situation at a home in Salem at about 12:30 p.m. local time.At the home, Oregon State Police says deputies were able to establish communications with the suspect, 34-year-old Jose Jesus Lopez-Tinoco, in an attempt to resolve the situation peacefully.But upon hearing gunshots inside the home, officers forced their way inside in a rescue attempt. During the rescue, police say one deputy fired an undetermined number of shots.Inside the home, police say deputies located the body of Lopez-Tinoco with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The officers also found a deceased 24-year-old, Diari Rocio -Bustos, and the body of an 11-year-old boy. Both suffered fatal gunshot wounds.A 13-year-old boy and a 43-year-old woman were also found alive in the home. The boy was unharmed, but the woman was seriously injured and was transported to a hospital.No law enforcement officers were injured and there’s no reason to believe there is any outstanding danger to the Salem community, officials say.The 2-year deputy who fired shots during the incident, Ricky Kittelson, has been placed on administrative leave, as is protocol.The investigation into the incident is being turned over to the Oregon State Police, concurrent with state policy regarding officer-involved shootings. 1534

(KGTV) -- The two soldiers killed in an aircraft accident on San Clemente Island have been identified, the U.S. Army Special Operations Command said Saturday.According to the news release, 33-year-old Staff Sgt. Vincent P. Marketta of New Jersey and 22-year-old Sgt. Taylor M. Shelton of San Bernardino died on August 27 during an aviation training mishap.Marketta enlisted in the Army in 2011 as a 15T UH-60 Black Hawk Repairer and was assigned to the 160th Special Operations Regiment. While assigned to the unit, Marketta deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. He also deployed multiple times to Iraq for Operation Inherent Resolve, according to the Army.Shelton enlisted in the Army in 2016 also as a 15T UH-60 Black Hawk Repairer and was assigned to the same unit as Marketta. During his service, Shelton deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.“The loss of Staff Sgt. Marketta and Sgt. Shelton has left a scar in this Regiment that will never completely heal,” said Col. Andrew R. Graham, commander of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne).“Their level of dedication to the 160th SOAR (A) and their exemplary service in the Army is the embodiment of what it means to be a Night Stalker and a Soldier.
