SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- People living along the coast in north county say they can't remember the last time mosquitoes were so bad.Sharon Mauro lives near the San Elijo Lagoon in Solana Beach."Oh, we couldn't leave the house without them attacking us," said Mauro.She hired Tony Gallardo of Mosquito Joe to spray her property."The last few weeks have been very busy. Basically, from the coastline all the way to Poway, the mosquito problem is pretty significant right now," said Gallardo.Gallardo says he sprays roughly 15 homes a day."This is kind of a perfect storm in everybody is stuck at home now, they want to be outside. The kids are getting tired of being inside. You get outside the mosquitos are eating everybody up, they're breeding cause they have more food, strange way to put it," said Gallardo.San Diego County Vector Control crews sprayed the lagoon last week. They also discovered a new trouble spot."A new spot showed up, and we didn't find until it was a wee bit too late. We do have it treated now, so it's going to be a one-time event," said Chris Conlan, the county's supervising vector ecologist.Conlan said the recent high tides contributed to the increase in mosquitoes."Whenever we get a very high tide event, especially something like a King Tide, as the water recedes from those high tide events sometimes leaves standing pools, and this mosquito is very good at taking advantage of that," said Conlan.Conlan said the Black Salt Marsh Mosquito doesn't transmit disease, but it's an aggressive "day biter," and can travel up to five miles.Residents worried about mosquitos near their property should contact the county's vector control program. 1675

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Parks and libraries in city limits of San Diego are back open as of Saturday, Oct. 3 after more than six months of closures and caution tape.To begin, 12 city libraries first opened for in-person services, then more will gradually open. The first library locations to resume in-person services include Central, Carmel Valley, Point Loma, Mission Valley, Rancho Bernardo, Malcolm X/Valencia Park, Mira Mesa, Logan Heights, San Ysidro, La Jolla, Mission Hills-Hillcrest, and College-Rolando.The libraries will open at 25% capacity starting Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The facilities will close for cleaning from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. daily and frequently touched areas will be cleaned hourly and after each usage. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Phone and tuition scams have stole more than 0,000 from the UCSD community since July, university police warn.Police say in just two months, victims within the university community have collectively lost 2,000 to suspects claiming they were with law enforcement in their home country. The scammers would demand money or threaten the victims with detention.In the case of phone scams, scammers would call and pose as an IRA employee or officer claiming to have an open case or, for international students, law enforcement of their home country. International students should refer to their local consulate for any type of government communications.When it comes to reported tuition scams, police say scammers have been targeting students with promises of tuition reduction if they use a third-party service to pay their fees. Scammers often promise a 5% tuition discount and request the victims send the reduced tuition funds. The scammers then request the victim's university credentials to pay their tuition with fraudulent or stolen credit card info. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are investigating after a body was found in Balboa Park Wednesday afternoon. According to officers, the body was found on the 2100 block of Balboa Drive near Juniper Road and the San Diego Chess Club. The cause of death is unclear at this time. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Police released a sketch Thursday depicting the suspect of a sexual assault at Black's Beach near La Jolla Shores this week.San Diego Police say the female victim was jogging on the beach Wednesday when she was sexually assaulted. The suspect slapped the woman's buttocks twice and grabbed her in the genital area before she broke free and called for help.Officers responded by did not find the man. The suspect is described as a Black man between 30 and 40 years old, with short to no hair and an earring in one ear. The man was naked at the time of the attack, police said.Anyone with information on this incident or any other information about the suspect is asked to call SDPD's Sex Crimes Unit at 619-531-2210. 742
