SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A shopper at Westfield UTC mall got a disturbing surprise while going to the bathroom, in the form of a cell phone's camera lens.Around noon on Saturday, amid a busy holiday shopping day, Mike Gonzalez went to the bathroom. His wife and 5-year-old daughter were waiting for him in the nearby food court."The urinals were taken so I went into the stall," said Gonzalez. Gonzalez went inside the stall at the far end."I'm finishing up my business, and I see a cell phone pop out of the stall next to me and pop back like that," said Gonzalez.He says the phone slid against the back wall just enough for the camera lens to be visible."Wow, did that actually happen?" said Gonzalez. Gonzalez' confusion quickly gave way to action."I was angry and felt violated," said Gonzalez. He told another man to get mall security before turning his attention to the stall."When you looked at the stall, he had it blocked with paper towels. You couldn't see in, top to bottom. Kicked the door a little and told him to get out," said Gonzalez.Gonzalez says the man that emerged was in his early 20s, about 5'10", 175 lbs, with curly, light brown hair. Gonzalez told him what he saw and the man denied it all."I was pushing him back, holding him in place so he couldn't leave," said Gonzalez.The shoving moved into the hallway, before the man slipped away and raced off. Gonzalez says what makes his skin crawl the most is the paper towel setup, which may mean the man had been in there awhile, taking photos. "The scariest thing is probably what if there were kids in there. You can put photos and videos online. Who knows what he does with it," said Gonzalez.Gonzalez filed a report with San Diego Police. 10news reached out to Westfield, but a spokesperson declined to comment, citing an active police investigation. 1828

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego man whose bike was stolen, decided to track the thief himself. But instead of turning him in, he turned the situation into something positive. Rob Greenfield never thought he'd see his bamboo bike again. “I didn’t lock it because I was sitting 20 feet from it and then I heard a noise and I looked back and saw the guy speeding off into the night with it.” When he found the thief, he didn't turn him in. He pulled him in for a hug, forgave him and took his bike back.  “It’s one of a kind bamboo bike but really what makes it special is that I’ve biked across the United States on it doing good deeds," he said. "So I’ve traveled thousands of miles across the country.” The theft made him want to do more good deeds, right here in San Diego. “I decided that rather than turning that into a really negative situation I would turn it into a positive situation," he said. "Knowing the feeling of having a bike stolen I decided I wanted to give bikes to kids who have had their bikes stolen and can’t afford a new one.” Greenfield started a GoFundMe to raise money for bikes. Bikes that he would then donate to the Boys and Girls Club - to kids whose bikes were stolen. He says it's a lesson in kindness that he hopes the thief who took his bike, and the kids who were given bikes, will pass on.“I can crowd out the bad with lots of good. So one bike stolen so I can give away 10 bikes, he said. "In that way it just wipes that bad deed out.”Rob gave away 10 bikes Tuesday and says that there is enough left for him to do it again.  1614

San Diego (KGTV) - About a hundred people packed the auditorium at Crown Point in Pacific Beach Wednesday night to sound off about the deckles bikes and scooters invading their community.The PB Town Council held the meeting.  Representatives from LimeBike, Ofo, BIRD, and Mobike were present to take questions from the crowd.RELATED: Coronado to begin impounding dockless?bikes, fining companiesThe two main concerns dealt with encroachment issues and safety concerns. The dockless bike and scooter rental model involves people checking them out using an app, but after they’re done using them, they can leave them anywhere for the next rider to find and use.Many complained of the vehicles cluttering sidewalks, storefronts and residential blocks.Other say people are riding them illegally, either because they are too young, without a helmet, or riding them without where the vehicles are not allowed.“They have no regard for human life I think someone is going to die,” one woman said.“it's with anything new right? You have a couple of bad actors that don’t know how to operate the vehicle responsibly,” Zack Bartlett with LimeBike said. “The community seems to be behind the technology.  We’re also in 45 markets, so this isn’t our first rodeo. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A VA hospital specialty clinic in La Jolla was evacuated Thursday afternoon due to a gas leak, the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department confirmed. According to the Department, the VA San Diego Healthcare System hospital's spinal cord facility on the 3300 block of La Jolla Village Drive was evacuated just before 3 p.m. The gas leak happened inside the two-story building, the department said. By 3:45 p.m., the situation was under control and evacuees were allowed to return.It’s unclear what caused the gas leak at this time. 10News will continue to keep you updated as soon as we receive more information. 633

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An El Cajon mother is searching for clues after her teenage son was brutally beaten and mugged in the East Village.Two Tuesdays ago, Sarah Swift-Farrow got the call every mother dreads. Her 19-year-old son, Titan Mellor, was in the ER and hurt badly."My heart dropped ... just a hopeless feeling," said Swift-Farrow.She believes around 2 p.m., her son, a Grossmont College student, was headed to the Family Health Centers clinic in the East Village, applying for some sort of state assistance, when it happened. Swift-Farrow learned details from the paramedics' report."He was attacked from behind by a group of people, hit in the back of the head with a glass bottle. He fell to the ground, was repeatedly punched, and lost consciousness. Then he was kicked in the face for an unknown duration of time," said Swift-Farrow.Swift-Farrow says the attackers took his keys, phone, and wallet, charging thousands of dollars in purchases on his credit cards during the next few days. As for Mellor, he suffered a concussion and a host of severe injuries."Multiple fractures in his eye socket, his nose, above the mouth, behind his ear and in the back of his head," said Swift-Farrow.She says his road to recovery won't be an easy one. His memory of the attack remains hazy."He remembers a group of six to eight males yelling at him, and then getting hit from behind," said Swift-Farrow.Swift-Farrow is making a plea for tips to help police fill in the missing details."They need to be caught because my son deserves justice, and I don’t want this to happen to anyone else," said Swift-Farrow.She says the first charge on the stolen credit card was at the nearby MTS stop.
