BARCELONA -- For adventure-seekers and travelers, the pandemic has put a damper on outdoor excursions. But for one filmmaker in Barcelona, a canceled family ski trip turned into an opportunity to bring adventure home to his living room.Philipp Klein Herrero is fanatical about skiing.“I am always skiing,” he said. “It's my passion.”So, when the pandemic lockdown forced him to cancel a long-planned family ski trip to France, the filmmaker decided to create a video for them.“I wanted to send them love from where I am and that's how the idea came about.”He taped a GoPro to his ceiling and cleared the room, bringing to life the adventure of a lifetime – on his living room floor.“It starts with me waking up on the side of the mountain in my sleeping bag and having my skis right next to me,” he said. “Once, it gets too steep to walk I switch into ice-climbing mode.”Over the next six and a half hours Klein painstakingly captured this stop-motion odyssey – one frame at a time. He used bed sheets for the side of the mountain.“And of course, nowadays the first thing you do when you reach the summit is you cheer and then take some selfies,” he said. The 57 second film has gone viral, making international headlines.“It just went absolutely crazy from there on,” he said.Klein says his only true desire was to spread a message of hope, inspiring others in challenging times. When asked what the most important thing that he wants people to take away from watching his video, he said that we all have to stay positive.“We have a tricky situation among us, and we literally don’t know how it’s going to end up, but it’s within us to make the best out of it.”He’s proving adventure can be found just about anywhere. 1724

BIRMINGHAM, Mich. (WXYZ) — A 15-year-old who was sent to a detention center for not completing schoolwork will be released from custody to her mother. The Michigan Court of Appeals made the ruling Friday.Grace had gotten into legal trouble last year, and as one of the conditions of her probation, she had to attend school and complete classwork, which her mother tells ProPublica her daughter was doing until the pandemic hit. She was ordered to a juvenile detention center for violating probation after not completing online coursework.Oakland County Judge Mary Ellen Brennan ruled on July 20 to keep Grace in detention after violating probation by failing to complete online school work.Brennan said she had to consider the actions that placed Grace on probation to begin with. Last fall, arguments between the teen and her mother turned violent. The judge says the mother was the victim and the daughter the aggressor.ProPublica, a nonprofit publication, brought attention to Grace's story."This is a student with disabilities who was struggling with remote learning situation and ended up in detention because of that," said Jodi Cohen, a reporter with ProPublica Chicago."In school the student gets one-on-one support from teachers and is allowed extra time to complete assignments because of (ADHD) and other disabilities," Cohen said.Without that support and the daily structure she was used to, Grace struggled. So she reached out to her special education teacher, "to say she needed help and that one-on-one tutoring began the day after the violation against probation was filed against her," Cohen said.ProPublica's investigation also found the situation may have been influenced by race in addition to Grace's learning disabilities. Grace is Black. "The case may also reflect, some experts and Grace’s mother believe, systemic racial bias. Grace is Black in a predominantly white community and in a county where a disproportionate percentage of Black youth are involved with the juvenile justice system," the ProPublica investigation stated. The following statement was released on behalf of Grace's mother:"She is enjoying her daughter being home, and will determine her and Grace’s interest in speaking publicly next week. In the interim, they are both extremely and deeply appreciative of the outpouring of support from around the country, and for Grace’s release; she is anxious to be with her family."View the full order from the Michigan Court of Appeals below:Release order for Grace on Scribd 2518

BALTIMORE, Md. - "I never thought that I would be on Facebook again, and going on Facebook is literally what changed my life."It was a lifesaving change for Rachel Rockwell. Her old classmate Kate Corzine would be her agent of change.“After having this condition for 12 years and knowing that I eventually needed to look for a liver donor, the time had come.”Rachel opened up on Facebook about her autoimmune disease, Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis. It was attacking her liver. She needed a transplant to survive. She and Kate hadn't spoken in about 15 years.Kate, a nurse, and mother of five did her research on live liver transplants answered Rachel's call for help."I approached my husband and said an old classmate of mine Rachel needs help and I think that this is something that we can do. I'd like to offer my help and after hearing a bit more he said, go for it."There was an outpouring of support for Rachel on social media. More than 50 people responded, but Kate ended up being the perfect match. They met for lunch two weeks prior to their Sept. 29 surgery date in the middle of a pandemic."It has been a challenging year for a lot of people and to have this hope that is shared and the joy that comes from it, it's pretty amazing."There's a lot of darkness and for people to see an opportunity for light and then see that happen so abundantly with Kate is very moving."While Rachel's grateful for Kate, both women are grateful for the medical team at Johns Hopkins that made it happen.Their surgeon, Dr. Andrew Cameron says the amazing story of Kate's willingness to share more than half of her liver with a former classmate.... is a testament to the importance of transplants.Their road to recovery is smooth so far.....Kate's liver is regenerating....and Rachel is on the mend with her PSC thanks to her new organ.“I'm on a lot of medication to keep the liver happy, Kate's liver happy, but a year from now it'll probably seem like my liver."While the two shared sisterhood at Bryn Mawr graduating from the girls' school in 1997. Now they consider themselves liver sisters. It's the piece of Kate that's giving Rachel a new lease on life. Kate has no regrets just advice.“Whether you have a loved one or a friend or you come across a bumper sticker or a Facebook post and you say wow that’s someone who needs help I think I can give that help, I would encourage you to do it."This story was first reported by Kelly Swoope at WMAR in Baltimore, Maryland. 2472
