SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The very controversial and polarizing issue of protesting the National Anthem hit very close to home this week. We shared a story about a veteran upset that high school basketball players chose not to stand for the anthem before a game. Our reporter received numerous letters about the story, some angry with our coverage. And that was the topic of our Let's Talk for the week.  410

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — This year's San Diego Pride festivities are going virtual, to comply with the Stay-at-home order brought on by the coronavirus pandemic. While hundreds of thousands of people tuned into the program online, others could not resist heading to Hillcrest for the annual celebration. No cars needed to be towed, and no streets needed to be blocked off Saturday. This year's San Diego Pride parade launched virtually in a quiet outdoor patio at Inside-Out restaurant in Hillcrest."Today's going to look a little different, but we're going to keep it as close to normal as possible," San Diego Pride Executive Director, Fernando Lopez, said.Organizers hoped to keep it "normal," despite trying times brought on by the coronavirus pandemic. But Pride is no stranger to the idea of "adapt and overcome.""Our parade has gone through a hurricane, our parade has gone through a bomb threat," San Diego Pride Philanthropy Director, Sarafina Scapicchio said. "We have had challenges to this event happening, and it is very important to keep our Pride traditions alive regardless of what's going on to the community."People who would normally be marching in Hillcrest submitted videos and logged on for live interviews. Others still made their way to University Avenue, to support local LGBTQ businesses and display their pride."Pride is feeling your true self and celebrating with your community," Lorraine Neville said while dining outdoors at Gossip Grill."It means one love," Cindy Lauritzen said, also at the restaurant.Cindy and Janine Lauritzen never miss a Pride. They say they want their love story to inspire the next generation."There was a day when we couldn't be married," Janine Lauritzen said. "Now we are and celebrating that, and getting the younger generations to see that it's OK to be who they are."They were one of the more than 160,000 people who tuned into the virtual parade from around the world.Organizers admit it was not perfect. Periodically, they faced a few digital and audio hiccups. But they say they are proud to spread this year's timely slogan."'Together We Rise,' is our message to everyone," Scapicchio said. "We're going to get through this together."They say even if mass gatherings are canceled, Pride is not.For more information on this weekend's San Diego Pride festivities, click HERE. 2341

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Supreme Court ruled Wednesday in favor of providing employers the option to opt out of providing free birth control to their staff, based on religious beliefs. The 7-2 vote was polarizing."It's a huge win for religion," Pastor Andy Ballon said."We are extremely disappointed," Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California’s President/CEO, Jodi Hicks said.Pastor Ballon said the vote is a victory because it allows people of faith the freedom to not do something they don't believe in. "We believe that life starts at conception, so we believe we should have the right to chose to not provide or not pay for these contraceptives."Ballon said women have options to access birth control outside their healthcare plan provided through work. One of those options is Planned Parenthood."We know what [the vote] means. It will have a devastating effect on women trying to plan how they want to live their lives quite frankly," Hicks said. She explained those plans could involve pursuing higher education or a career.Hicks said 5.5 million women in California could have to pay if their employers opt out. Hicks said that leaves minorities much more vulnerable, saying many can't afford birth control."We are planning on campaigning to encourage those companies still cover access to birth control for women," she said.Pastor Ballon said it's not a fight against women. "Women play an important role in my life and it's not about taking anybody's rights. It's about protecting the life in the belly of the woman."He said he has great respect for women.Hicks responded, "your religious choices can't impede on someone else's decisions to be healthy."The ruling rolls back 'Obamacare', but could be reversed in a future administration. 1753

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Three San Diego universities were ranked among the best colleges in the nation, according to an annual study.Princeton Review's "Best 385 Colleges" survey annually ranks to best colleges in America and in San Diego, students have a lot of reasons to be proud.San Diego State University; University of California, San Diego; and University of San Diego all made the list (in no particular order.) The review surveyed 140,000 students on a series of topics, including campus culture, professors and administrators, and school services. While the three schools ranked among the best colleges, they also gathered their own individual accolades on Princeton Review as well:San Diego State UniversityThe Best 385 Colleges 2019Best WesternBest Value CollegesGreen CollegesLots of Greek Life (#9)The Princeton Review says students at SDSU are fortunate to receive a "quality, affordable education" with a wide variety of majors and minors, and course flexibility. It's one reason one student tells the Review, “USD encourages its students to apply what they learn in the world to make positive, impactful, sustainable change." 2172

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The second phase of the San Diego's styrofoam ban went into effect Friday. Local restaurants are ditching styrofoam for environmentally friendly products. Customers will see more sustainable items made from paper and aluminum. The transition to more sustainable produces also comes with a price. "It's a little more expensive but we understand why we have to do it," said Maggie Rojas from Giorgino's Cheesesteaks in Golden Hill. "Little by little we started the transition, so we didn't wait until the last minute to do it.""We all care about the environment so we want to help out," said Rojas. "It’s a big problem."There are some exceptions to the rules. Grocery stores will be able to use styrofoam trays for packaging raw meat, fish and poultry through 2021. Businesses who made less than 0,000 last year will have until February 2020 to adhere to the new rules. For a full list of the items that are banned, click here. 955
