SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego coffee drinkers plenty to be buzzed about with the local java scene.Recently, Mostra Coffee in Carmel Mountain was named Micro Coffee Roaster of the Year by Roast Magazine. The company, led by Filipino-American friends Jelynn Malone, Beverly Magtanong, Sam Magtanong, and Mike Arquines, has operated in San Diego since 2013 and gained a reputation for their creative drinks."We dreamt up this company and wanted our Filipino culture to be a part of it, but we didn't know anything about coffee or where to begin to source Philippine coffee," said Malone. "Traditional lattes, cappuccinos and a sprinkle of a few manual pour over methods. Maybe even a few shops carried something called 'cold brew' ... if you were lucky of course. You now have more than a couple dozen talented roasters (with 2-3 opening every couple months), each with a varying range of eclectic menu offerings, roast styles and gorgeous interiors worthy of any [Instagram] post or lifestyle blog," Arquines added.Mraz Family Farms grew the first geisha coffee bean in San Diego recently, putting America's Finest City on the coffee growing map. The farm, developed by Grammy-winning musician Jason Mraz, grows about 2,800 coffee trees with several other varieties. The farm partnered with Frinj Coffee to offer the beans. Taste makers and brew masters get the craft of what we are doing," Taylor said. A workplace needed to have a 3.5 out of 5 overall rating, and workplace factor ratings in career opportunities, compensation and benefits, culture and values, senior management, and work-life balance of at least 2.5.For the eleventh year in a row, Boston-based consulting firm Bain & Company took the top spot. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Police Chief David Nisleit has ordered an internal investigation into a controversial arrest that is making the rounds on social media. The video shows a protester being taken away in an unmarked van as one officer warns her family around her not to follow them or he will shoot. Thursday at around 9:30 pm, a young woman is handcuffed on Park Avenue. Moments later, she is snatched off the street and taken away in the unmarked police vehicle. "She said somebody took Shayla; like somebody came and took her," the woman's mother, Breann Piccini, told ABC 10News exclusively. (WATCH VIDEO IN PLAYER ABOVE STORY)The woman detained in the video is a 20-year-old biracial San Diego State University student, Shayla Piccini. Piccini's mother said Shayla and her cousins spent the day at a massive protest in Downtown San Diego. After several hours, the group was walking back to their car when Shayla saw several police motorcycles driving past them. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego International Airport is reporting an increase in travelers as coronavirus restrictions continue to lift.New numbers from the San Diego Airport Authority showed that from June 18 to 21, an average of 8,679 daily travelers went through the TSA Checkpoint. That's a drop off of 80 percent from the same time last year. However, during the height of the coronavirus restrictions in April, the drop off was as much as 95 percent compared to the same time in 2019. "From what we are seeing and based on our conversations with airlines, leisure travel is coming back faster than business travel, and this is consistent with nationwide trends and reports," said Airport Authority spokeswoman Sabrina LoPiccolo. LoPiccolo says the airport has taken numerous steps to help stop the spread of COVID-19, including plexiglass sneeze guards in some areas, increased cleaning and floor markers to encourage social distancing. The large drop off in travel has taken a toll on businesses that depend on travelers to survive.Across the runway at Park, Shuttle, and Fly, owner Al Cruz says the lack of air travel forced his family to temporarily lay off the lots 15 workers."We were very scared," Cruz said. "We moved real quick, we have to survive. We're family-owned and we're not a big corporation. We don't have a lot of money to sustain us.During the height of the shutdown, Cruz rented hundreds of spots to a rental car company to store excess cars, but it was a revenue cut. In June, he received a Paycheck Protection Program loan and reopened, hiring back the 15 workers. There are now about 45 cars owned by travelers in the lot. Cruz said he needs the trend of increased flying to continue to make it. "If it does not, it flattens out like it was three months ago, we can't survive on that," he said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police officers on Friday were working to get a suspect to surrender after a reported shooting.Police say a shooting between the two vehicles occurred just before 2:30 p.m. in the 9800 block of Scripps Westview Way in Scripps Ranch. No one was injured in the shooting.The person who was shot at told police he knew where the suspect lived and officers responded to an apartment complex at 9700 Scripps Westview Way.Officers were trying to get the suspect to come out as of 3:15 p.m.10News is following this breaking news.
