(KGTV)— Family and friends of 19-year-old Kiera Bergman gathered at the Ronald Reagan Community Center to celebrate her life. A month-long search ended in a body discovery in the Arizona desert. Her ex-boyfriend, 23-year-old John Clark is accused of killing her. Kiera Bergman was the eldest daughter of the Bergman-Bragg family. Her mother Kiersten Bragg remembered Kiera had a strong personality, even before she was born.“I never forget I would always crave SpaghettiOs and that was one of her favorite things to eat,” Bragg said. She said as a teen Kiera would crave the canned spaghetti. Her family told 10News, Kiera was a spunky, playful, chunky toddler. "I always compared her to the Michelin man because she had tons of rolls everywhere,” her mother laughed. Then she became a big sister to Braydee. Kiera was silly, artistic, a talented singer, with a big heart. In his speech at the ceremony, her grandfather shared the time she spent her first ever paycheck from her part-time job on the homeless.“She bought the lady lunch. And I don't know many teenagers who will take their first paycheck and do that. So that kind of shows you what kind of girl she was,” Jim Bergman said, in tears. They said Kiera hoped to one day combine her giving personality with her dream job - America's best hairstylist.“Her dream was to at least once or twice a month, go to the homeless and do their hair and make them feel better about themselves,” Bragg said. But she was not able to live out her dream. Her boyfriend at the time, John Clark, convinced her to drop out of Cosmetology school. The two them moved to Arizona in March. Her boyfriend is accused of killing and leaving Bergman in the Arizona desert."That's what breaks my heart. (KGTV) - A day after a massive fire broke out in an East County recycling plant, smoke was seen billowing from a building just a freeway exit away Thursday.San Diego firefighters responded to the site at about 12:30 p.m. Smoke could be seen pouring from a building in the 100 block of Fletcher Parkway in El Cajon. The site is that of the city's former police station, that has since sat abandoned.It's not clear if there were active flames inside the building, but footage from Sky10 showed thick smoke coming from the building.San Diego Police officers were also seen nearby with three individuals sitting on the ground. Police have not confirmed if anyone was in custody or being questioned.The site was approved for redevelopment last year, with plans to build a hotel and retail stores on the site.Wednesday, a metal recycling facility burst into flames, sending black smoke into the air. (KGTV) — A judge increased bail for the woman accused of hitting a 9-year-old boy with her car and driving away last Thursday. Courtney Webber appeared in court for the very first time since the crash. Webber's bail was increased to 0,000. The 25-year-old is accused of running a red light and hitting the boy, on his bike, as he was crossing the street at the intersection of Sunshine Avenue and West Main Street in El Cajon. She was located about 12 hours later, hiding under a bed at her mother's Lakeside home. Court documents indicate Webber was on probation for a previous DUI conviction and had a suspended license. The 9-year-old boy hasn't been identified but attorneys tell 10News he is still recovering at a local hospital. DUNCAN, Okla. -- Rural hospitals faced unique challenges preparing for a rush of COVID-19 patients. From financial struggles to attaining PPE, smaller facilities did everything they could to get ready.One regional hospital in Oklahoma has waited for months for coronavirus cases to flood their emergency room, but that wave of patients is just now starting to trickle in.“We saw cases increasing, but as of now, it hasn’t come to Duncan quite like we expected,” said Dr. Michael Hemphill, a pulmonary and critical care physician and Duncan Regional’s Director of the ICU.As coronavirus cases overload emergency rooms across the country, this rural hospital—one of few medical centers in Southern Oklahoma—has only seen a handful of cases. After the holiday weekend, their facility is starting to see cases increase.As they wait for the surge, the fear of what would happen if beds or supplies ran out looms over the staff.“The most difficult thing is, there’s not a lot of backup,” said Hemphill. “I’m the only pulmonogist in Duncan,” he said.So, the hospital gathered as much personal protective equipment as possible—preparing for the worst.Chief Nursing Officer Kristen Webb said it’s been tougher to get critical supplies as a smaller hospital.“The last time we were able to receive N95’s was probably in December,” said Webb. She said they needed them again come February, but were never able to fill any of the orders they placed.When she was able to find supplies, she spent every penny she could to make sure staff would be safe.“We probably spent close to a million dollars on equipment, PPE, or other supplies and equipment towards a pandemic that we didn’t fully realize at this point,” said Webb.That massive expense was made tougher because the hospital had to cancel all elective procedures and appointments.“We spent quite a bit of money at a time where we weren’t bringing in our normal resources,” said Webb.“Rural hospitals are especially financially strained, especially here in Oklahoma, so when everything shut down…our elective procedures shut down. So, there is a financial burden the hospital had to bear,” said Dr. Hemphill.The burden extends past these walls to Jefferson County Hospital. Duncan Regional helps the critical access hospital stay open. It’s a facility with only 18 beds that was on the verge of shutting down just a couple years ago.But if the pandemic hits, that critical access facility and Duncan Regional are the places people will turn to. So it’s necessary these facilities maintain enough revenue to stay open so communities have access to care. 2601
