BEIJING, April 7 (Xinhua) -- Top political advisor Jia Qinglin said Wednesday the mainland visit by retired generals from Taiwan has enriched the content of exchanges across the Taiwan Strait and is a sign of improved ties.Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), made the remarks while meeting with the delegation led by Hsu Li-nung.Cross-strait relations have seen significant changes in recent years and ties between the mainland and Taiwan reflect a bright future for peaceful development, he said.Jia Qinglin (R), chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, talks with Hsu Li-nung during his meeting with a delegation of retired generals from Taiwan led by Hsu, in Beijing, China, April 7, 2010.The two sides should oppose "Taiwan independence" secessionist activities and stick to the principle that the mainland and Taiwan belong to one China to maintain peace across the Strait, Jia said.Such a situation forms a solid political basis for the development of cross-Strait ties in the right direction, he added.

BEIJING, June 6 (Xinhua) -- In light of the recent school attacks, China has tightened security for the college entrance examination which begins on Monday."All the relevant departments and local governments are fully prepared to respond to emergencies during the exam," said Liu Junyi, vice-director of the exam center under the Ministry of Education, on Sunday. In Beijing, police, security guards and volunteers will work together to guard the exam venues. In Henan and Anhui provinces, emergency-responses have been prepared in case of disorder due to bad weather, serious cheating behavior, food poisoning, or traffic accidents.China's national college entrance examination will be held on Monday, with more than 9.57 million examinees competing for 6.57 million places at nationwide universities and colleges.Because of the recent slew of attacks against students, boarding school teachers in south China' s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region are required to walk students from their schools to the exam venues."The college entrance exam is a matter of great importance that demands joint efforts of relevant departments," Liu said.In Chongqing municipality, public security departments have inspected students' living areas around exam venues to ensure their safety. In Hubei province, relevant departments have completed a rehearsal using exam paper B in case that students are found cheating using exam paper A.In Jilin, an anti-cheating campaign has seized over 4,000 cheating device sets."We have organized a dozen expert teams, who are ready to handle nationwide emergencies and incidents," Liu said.In quake-hit Yushu of Qinghai Province, experts from the Ministry of Education have arrived to help hold the exam.A total of 9.57 million people have registered to sit for the exam this year. BEIJING, March 26 (Xinhua) -- China's health authorities stressed Friday a ban of hepatitis B tests for college admission and employment, saying checks, if necessary due to occupational requirements, are subjected to the Health Ministry's approval.A notice of the ministry reiterated that health institutions are not allowed to give hepatitis B virus (HBV) tests in health checks carried out for college admission and job recruitment, a policy introduced in February to prevent discrimination on HBV carriers. If candidates' liver functions must be tested to qualify special job posts, the checks must get approval from the Health Ministry, the notice said. The notice also said health institutions cannot provide HBV tests in regular health checks unless at the request of testers, in which case reports must be sealed and handed directly to testers or someone they entrust.Clinical tests must seek consent from patients and their privacy should be respected, according to the notice.Previously, an HBV test was a must on the health check list for college admission and job recruitment, and carriers were usually denied the opportunities, which caused complaints of discrimination and calls for a ban of such tests. The World Health Organization says HBV is transmitted from mother to child, through unsafe injections practices, blood transfusions or sexual contacts, and it cannot be transmitted through casual contact.

COPENHAGEN, May 28 (Xinhua) -- Danish Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Lene Espersen met here Friday with visiting Vice Chairman of the Chinese National People's Congress Standing Committee Hua Jianmin.Espersen congratulated China on its successful opening of the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai. She said Denmark has fully supported the expo by sending its national treasure Little Mermaid."I hope the Chinese audience will learn more about the Danish culture and the economic and social development of Denmark," Espersen said. The minister praised the Chinese people's hard working and entrepreneurial spirit, and lauded the miracle of China's economic development.Espersen said China and Denmark are important trading partners, not least due to the fact that there are more than 400 Danish enterprises investing in China."Denmark greatly appreciates that China recently sent a trade and investment mission to visit Denmark, and Denmark more than welcomes Chinese corporations to invest in Denmark," Espersen said.Hua, for his part, said bilateral relations have matured over the past 60 years. He said the two sides have sought a common ground on the basis of friendly cooperation.Hua noted that the bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership established in 2008 has offered new opportunity for further development of the Sino-Danish relationship. He also mentioned the increased cultural exchanges between China and Denmark, citing the establishment of a Confucius Institute in Denmark.

TOKYO, June 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said here on Tuesday both China and Japan should take the road of peaceful development. The peoples of the two countries should promote mutual understanding, trust and cooperation between them, Wen said in an interview with the Japanese public broadcaster NHK."Japan's pacifist constitution adopted after World War II stipulates that Japan should follow the road of peaceful development, which has brought tangible benefits to Japan in terms of rapid economic growth and greatly improved standards of living for the Japanese people," Wen said.Speaking of China's tremendous social and economic progress since the adoption of the reform and opening-up policy more than 30 year ago, he said China will stick to the path of peaceful and harmonious development."Both China and Japan should take the road of peaceful development. Therefore, both the Chinese and Japanese peoples should understand and trust each other and cooperate with each other," he said. The reason why China attaches so much importance to taking history as a mirror and looking into the future is by no means intended to perpetuate hatred, but to promote the feelings and friendship between the two peoples and to prevent a repeat of the past tragedy, Wen said.He called on the leaders, news media and the academic circles of both countries to play their part in facilitating the exchange of thoughts and the friendship between the two peoples and promote their mutual understanding.
