SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The fire on the USS Bonhomme Richard has impacted every sailor who works on the ship, but also those who live on the ship. To help, groups have stepped up to accept donations to give to the people who have been displaced. The Navy Life Naval Base San Diego Facebook page posted a warning to watch out for fake GoFundMe or charity request pages, and said the government is not allowed to accept donated funds to fix or replace the ship.Related: Crews battle USS Bonhomme Richard fire for fourth dayThe post highlighted three official groups to donate to who are safe and reliable: Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, which is accepting online payments and mailed in checks to be donated to sailors,Support the Enlisted Project, which is accepting all types of donations, andUSO San Diego, which is also accepting all types of donations.Gillian Gonzalez, with the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, said more than 80 sailors lost all of their belongings in the fire. Her group immediately bought gift cards for sailors displaced and they’re working on replacing uniforms as well. She advises that people who make donations to their group specify that their donation should go to the USS Bonhomme Richard sailors directly. The USO office is taking every type of donation, from hygienic items to clothes. Executive Director Ashley Camac said they’ve taken loads of items to the ship every day since the fire started.“It might have been where they lived. It certainly is where they worked. So when you bring product to them and you bring toiletries to them and you bring essential needed items, there’s a smile that happens, there’s a sense of relief,” said Camac. 1682

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The city could be heading back to square one in its quest to regulate short-term vacation rentals. On Monday, the San Diego City Council will decide whether to send its recently approved short-term rental regulations to a public vote, or scratch them altogether. In the summer, the council voted 6-3 to limit Airbnb-type rentals to primary residences. That essentially banned investors and owners of second homes from renting them out short-term.Airbnb launched a referendum that obtained enough signatures to send the decision back to the council, leaving the city those two options. "The people who own short-term rentals - they're San Diegans like you and me," said Jeff MacGurn, who owns a short-term rental in the Hillcrest area with his husband and signed the petition. "When it comes right down to it, what we want is a fair and reasonable compromise."But Ronan Gray, who heads Save San Diego Neighborhoods, said something has to be done to curtail short-term rentals in residential areas. He pointed to a City Attorney memo that says short-term rentals aren't allowed by municipal code and said the city should just enforce that code. "They're advertising houses in Pacific Beach as the ideal location for bachelor and bachelorette parties, so they're marketing it as a hotel," he said. The council meets at 12 p.m. Monday at City Hall.  1405

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The County of San Diego is providing free COVID-19 testing to all school employees returning to in-person learning, a recommendation by the California Department of Public Health. There are more than 80,000 school employees across the county. “This is everybody from bus drivers, to food service workers, to teachers, to administrators,” said Music Watson, the Chief of Staff for the San Diego County Office of Education, or SDCOE.While most schools are sticking with distance learning, for now, some are preparing to return to in-person learning starting in September. The school employees that do return will be tested for COVID-19 often.“The recommendation is that in any given two month period, you’ve tested 100% of school employees, with about half being tested in any given month,” said Watson. “People who are doing distance learning and teaching in a distance format and not coming into contact with students and school staff, they’re not going to have to be tested.”The county is partnering with SDCOE to develop more testing sites specifically for school employees by late September.Testing is currently available at the more than 20 county coordinated sites at no cost to school staff. If positive tests are discovered, classrooms, schools, and districts may need to shut down for two weeks.“If 5% of a classroom tests positive, that classroom would close, and they would self-isolate. If 5% of a school tests positive, the school would close for two weeks, and if 25% of district tests positive, the entire district would close for that two week self-isolation period,” said Watson. “In a classroom, 5% is basically one student or teacher, that’s why it’s so important to have a testing protocol in place.”If a classroom or school does have to shut down, students will continue learning for the two weeks.“That doesn’t mean all of a sudden it’s 14-days of no learning, it means transitioning to virtual which might be online or packet work depending on the particulars of that situation,” said Watson. It’s not currently recommended that asymptomatic children get tested for COVID-19, but if a parent or guardian wants their child tested, they should discuss it with their pediatrician. 2222

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The family of Kiera Bergman says a recent development in her murder case has left them frustrated and fearful. The 19-year-old woman was missing for weeks before her body was discovered in the desert outside of Phoenix last year. Bergman's boyfriend, Jon Clark, was charged in the murder; but this month, a judge lowered his bond from million to 0,000. RELATED: Friends and family celebrate the life of Kiera Bergman"I fear for my family, I fear for her roommate and any other girls out there that he could have the opportunity to start manipulating," said Kiersten Bragg, Bergman's mother. According to CBS 5 Phoenix, Clark's lawyers argued there's new evidence that might clear him in his trial. They also say that in original court paperwork, police detectives made comments that didn't add up. If Clark does bail out, he'll have to wear an ankle monitor. RELATED: Court documents: Kiera Bergman may have been pregnant at time of her death"I just yeah, I broke down and lost it, called my husband and let him know," said Bragg. She's frustrated Clark could potential go home and be somewhat comfortable, while her daughter will never get that chance again. Previous court documents reveal suspicious text messages and Wi-fi records as some of the evidence police used to arrest Clark. Documents also showed a history of domestic disputes.RELATED: Kiera Bergman case: Charges filed against ex-boyfriend in death of El Cajon womanClark's trial is scheduled for early next year but has already been postponed several times.10News reached out to Clark's attorneys but did not hear back. 1618
