SAN DIEGO — (KGTV) -- Democrat Sara Jacobs continues to hold a double-digit lead over Democrat Georgette Gomez in the race for California's 53rd Congressional District, according to a new scientific poll.The ABC-10News Union-Tribune scientific poll shows Jacobs leading Gomez 40 percent to 27 percent, with 33 percent still undecided. The two Democrats are vying to replace Susan Davis, who is retiring in the central and south San Diego district after nearly 20 years. The poll shows Jacobs, granddaughter of Qualcomm founder Irwin Jacobs, leading in support from those who describe themselves as liberal, moderate, conservative, and very conservative. Gomez, currently the City Council president, is generating most of her support from voters who describe themselves as very liberal."With only two weeks left to go until the election, Georgette Gomez is running out of time to close the gap on Sara Jacobs," said Thad Kousser, a political scientist at UC San Diego.Kousser said the closer the election gets, the harder it will be for Gomez to catch up, because of the increase in mail-in ballots and early voting. The poll shows 26 percent of the respondents already sent in their ballots. Kousser said, however, that Jacobs still has not reached the 50 percent support threshold, leaving the door open for Gomez, who will have to convince most of the undecideds to support her. "She hasn't been making substantial progress at the same time that she's being hugely outspent on the airwaves by Sara Jacobs," he said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 22-year-old man was fatally stabbed during a fight in the College Area, police said Thursday.The stabbing was reported shortly before 7:35 p.m. Wednesday at a home near 71st Street and Mohawk Street, about two blocks north of El Cajon Boulevard, San Diego police Lt. Matt Dobbs said.Officers responded and found a man suffering from at least one stab wound to his upper torso, Dobbs said. The victim, whose name was withheld pending family notification, was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:56 p.m. Wednesday.Investigators determined the victim was hosting a gathering at the residence when some a disagreement began, prompting the him to ask people to leave, the lieutenant said. About 30 minutes later, some of the attendees returned and a fight broke out, during which the victim was stabbed.The suspects drove off in two vehicles, one described as a silver sedan and the other as a tan- or gold-colored sedan, Dobbs said.No detailed descriptions of the suspects were immediately available. 1043

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A coalition of regional partners joined together Thursday to announce the San Diego County Childcare Provider Grant Program, an initiative that will distribute million in coronavirus relief funding to childcare providers impacted by COVID-19.The coalition, which includes the County of San Diego, The San Diego Foundation, Child Development Associates and YMCA of San Diego County, will open the application period Monday. The San Diego County Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to distribute million of Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act funding to eligible childcare providers in San Diego County."The childcare sector is very important, as our economy cannot be sustainable if parents do not have safe places for their children to be cared for and educated while they are working," said Supervisor Nathan Fletcher, co- chair of the county's COVID-19 subcommittee. "This new million grant program will help childcare providers make their centers safe during the coronavirus pandemic and allow them to remain open so parents can return to work."Funding will be allocated based on predetermined categories outlined in the CARES Act agreement. Large family childcare providers -- licensed to care for a maximum of 14 children -- will be eligible to receive up to ,500 and small family childcare providers -- licensed to care for a maximum of eight children -- will be eligible for up to ,750. Non-government-contracted licensed providers will be eligible to receive up to 5 per child capacity, based on childcare license.Partially-funded government-contracted licensed childcare centers such as HeadStart will be eligible to receive up to 5 per non-subsidized child, not to exceed license capacity. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 24-year-old woman who succumbed to some type of medical emergency -- possibly a drug overdose -- and became gravely ill after being arrested in University City last week died in a hospital today, authorities reported.Aleah Jenkins was pronounced dead at UCSD Medical Center nine days after being taken into custody, according to San Diego police.On the afternoon of Nov. 27, Jenkins was riding in a vehicle that was pulled over in the 3700 block of La Jolla Village Drive, Lt. Matt Dobbs said.After determining that she was the subject of an outstanding misdemeanor warrant for possession of methamphetamine, officers arrested Jenkins. While still at the scene of the traffic stop, Jenkins became ill and vomited."The officers called for paramedics, but (Jenkins) said she had only had an upset stomach, so medics were canceled," Dobbs said.Jenkins was then taken to downtown SDPD headquarters, where, while being processed for booking into county jail, she passed out, according to police."Officers immediately began lifesaving efforts and called for medical assistance," the lieutenant said.Paramedics took over the emergency aid and rushed Jenkins in for hospital care."During the course of the medical intervention, controlled substances were found concealed in (Jenkins') clothing," Dobbs said this afternoon."At this point, there is no indication any force was used on (her)."A cause-of-death ruling will remain on hold pending autopsy results.Police, however, believe that Jenkins may have suffered a drug overdose, according to Dobbs.The officers who conducted the traffic stop during which Jenkins was taken into custody have been identified as Nicholas Casciola and Jason Taub. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 33-year-old man was in custody this morning on suspicion of trying to carjack a man in the Talmadge area.The victim was driving in the area of Euclid Avenue and El Cajon Boulevard around 2 p.m. Friday when the suspect grabbed onto the victim's vehicle and was able to get the passenger door open, Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department said.The suspect, identified as Christopher Gomez, got inside and began hitting the victim and asking for the vehicle, Heims said.The victim drove to a parking lot and got Gomez out of the vehicle. Gomez was later arrested, according to Heims.It was unclear whether the driver sustained any injuries. 681
