SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Customs and Border Protection officers seized more than .4 million over three months across San Diego County's ports of entry, according to the agency.CBP says the undeclared money bound for Mexico was seized between April and June at ports of entry including Calexico, Otay Mesa, Cross Border Xpress, San Ysidro, and Tecate, CBP says.One of the largest stops occurred in May when a vehicle was stopped in Otay Mesa and discovered money hidden in boxes with other items in the cargo area of the vehicle."These various interdictions by our vigilant officers are just a fraction of the regular attempts we see during the year," said Pete Flores, Director of Field Operations for CBP in San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Caltrans is alerting San Diegans of a closure that will shut down SR-163 Wednesday and Thursday nights.According to the agency, all lanes of SR-163 will close between Interstate 8 and Genesee Avenue between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday nights.Caltrans says the northbound lanes will close Wednesday night and the southbound lanes will shut down Thursday night. At no time will the road close in both directions at the same time.RELATED: Check traffic conditionsSome of the lanes will begin closing at 7 p.m. with all the lanes closing by 11 p.m. The closure will also include the eastbound and westbound I-8 connector ramps to northbound SR-163. The eastbound Friars Road on-ramp to northbound SR-163 will also be closed.Caltrans says all southbound motorists will be rerouted to southbound I-805. Northbound travelers will be rerouted to eastbound I-8.The closures will take place so crews can continue installing falsework on the Friars Road Bridge. 1002

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Before taking children trick-or-treating this Halloween, families are encouraged to visit The Megan's Law Website where hundreds of registered sex offenders are listed across San Diego. The search tool allows families to look up registered sex offenders in their neighborhood or other parts around the state and see them on a map."Megan’s Law also authorizes local law enforcement agencies to notify the public about sex offender registrants found to be posing a risk to public safety," the site says.The map lists markers surrounding the address used in the search.  Users can input any address and radius for a broader search. Information includes images of the sex offender, known aliases, addresses, description of the person, offenses, and a risk assessment.According to website, some of the registrants are currently in violation of their registration requirements and asks the public to contact police with information they may have about these individuals.The website was created and named after 7-year-old Megan Kanka, of New Jersey, who was brutally raped and killed in 1994 by her neighbor, Jesse Timmendequas.  Timmendequas had been convicted for sexually assaulting young girls.  After serving less than a year in a correctional facility, he  moved into a home across the street from the family without their knowledge. "In the wake of that tragedy, the Kankas sought to have local communities warned about sex offenders in the area. All states in the U.S. now have some form of Megan's Law," the website says.The website indicates that some of the registrants are currently in violation of their registration requirements. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Armed private security guards - and others with nonlethal ways to defend themselves - could soon patrol iconic San Diego locations like Balboa Park and the downtown Central Library.The city of San Diego is officially seeking proposals from security firms that would authorize armed or enhanced safety personnel outside more than 50 places, including community parks, skate parks, and library branches. The guards could either carry guns or non-lethal weapons, such as mace or hand restraints, depending on the arrangement. The city currently has very few armed guards - mostly stationed around public bathrooms downtown. RELATED: City may seek armed guards at Central Library, other parksA firm called Able Patrol and Guard patrols city parks and libraries, However, those guards are unarmed and essentially observe and report. The change comes after guards reported being threatened, spit on, and harassed, namely by a growing homeless population outside the Central Library. The city is now aiming to increase their ability to defend themselves. "The goal of the RFP is to provide the proper level of security for City facilities as determined by City departments."Graham said a San Diego Police expert reviewed the document for technical soundness. He said the police chief would always be notified in the event of armed security dispatched. The city is seeking responses by Sept. 7. Mayor Kevin Faulconer was not available for an interview. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - City leaders say the canyon near the 163 that caught fire Tuesday afternoon was overdue for tree trimming and a homeless flushing.The fire only burned 10 trees but it has many neighbors frustrated that the fire even started in the first place.“That was a pretty big one,” said Councilman Chris Ward on the fire, “we’re pretty scared here in the mid city neighborhoods with the urban canyons which catch fire from time to time.”Ward says he has been trying for over a year to get CalTrans and the City of San Diego to clear out the canyons.Officials have not announced the cause of the fire but it is believe to have been from a cooking fire started by homeless illegally camping.RELATED: Brush fire breaks out near 163“About a generation ago we lost 75 homes in Normal Heights to a canyon fire so this is a real, real danger.” said Ward, “We gotta take this seriously.” 896
