SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The suspect of a Spring Valley murder nearly seven years has been arrested in New York.Waverly James, 49, was arrested in New York for the Dec. 6, 2012, murder of 52-year-old Stanford Roy Johnson, according to the San Diego Sheriff's Department.Deputies say they were called to a home in the 9000 block of Lemon St. on Dec. 6, 2012, for a welfare check. Deputies found the rear door open and discovered Johnson dead from multiple stab wounds.James was identified as a suspect and arrested on a warrant in New York. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- There are increasing calls for more police oversight. In San Diego, a proposed measure would create a new independent body to investigate alleged misconduct. Both San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer and District Attorney Summer Stephan have pledged support for a new body to hold police accountable.Maresa Talbert with San Diegans for Justice said they welcome the support, but there is still some skepticism.“It seems very reactionary after all of this pressure that now they come out and support. This ballot measure is not a new thing. This has been proposed since 2012,” Talbert said.There is currently a Citizens Review Board on Police Practices, but Talbert said it is far from independent. “Their legal council is the city attorney, who represents both the Police Officers Association and the CRB so it represents a true conflict of interest,” Talbert said. The new proposed commission would have the ability to investigate cases. It would also have independent lawyers and subpoena power. The head of the San Diego POA said the support a measure on the ballot to let the people decide what is best for police oversight. “I think if people go into things with an investigative mind trying to find the truth, I think that any of these things can be very effective,” said POA President Jack Schaeffer. Talbert said even if passed, the city council still has to write an ordinance and some of the language could change. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Thousands of San Diego students Friday are expected to take part in the county's largest ever high school walkout on climate change. "I think it's a pivotal moment for youth," said Katelynn Sutton, a senior at High Tech High in Point Loma and event organizer. Around 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Sutton will lead dozens of students plan on a walkout. The students will hop on a bus to San Diego's City Hall, where they will attend a public rally for climate action for the rest of the school day."It's going to show adults they need to take action now because we don't have any more time," said Sutton.Around the same time at University City High, senior Summer Camporesi will be leading hundreds of students on a walkout."We'll be meeting in the middle of school and then walking up Genesee [Avenue] to Standley Middle School," said Camporesi.At a park near the school, they will join several hundred middle school students for an hour-long rally, before heading back to class. In all, dozens of schools across San Diego County are expected to take part in the global climate strike, most of them high schools."We're showing it's super important. We're willing to take time out of our education," said Camporesi.Several area school districts, including San Diego Unified and Sweetwater Union High School District, have passed resolutions supporting the youth-led global campaign. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The woman who was shot in the forehead by a police bean bag during Saturday's protest in La Mesa is slowly recovering but her attorney told 10News that the family is still desperate for details from police about what happened.10News has video of 59-year-old Leslie Furcron as she was recording a Facebook Live. She is heard yelling and then the phone drops and the screen goes black.“She was struck in the forehead with a ballistic bean bag projectile,” said attorney Dante Pride during Thursday’s interview with 10News.Pride said Furcron was among the thousands of people in front of the La Mesa Police Department. He said that she was peacefully protesting police violence and the killing of George Floyd when he said that it all turned to chaos and an officer fired at Furcron. On Wednesday, the department said that once officers deemed the gathering to be an unlawful assembly, they began to use measures to disperse protestors, including tear gas and bean bag rounds. Furcron was placed in a medically induced coma with a breathing tube, which was just removed. “On June 3rd, they took the tube out of Ms. Furcron’s mouth. She is still is unable to speak at this point and she did have a surgery I believe on the 2nd to repair the damage to her forehead,” added Pride. He said that doctors still don’t know if she’ll lose an eye.On Thursday afternoon, La Mesa Police reported that the investigation is ongoing and there are no new details to release.Pride said he believes that a third party should be investigating the incident and that the officer who fired the bean bag should face criminal charges if it's deemed appropriate. “There should never be a point in time where an officer should shoot a metal projectile bean bag from an elevated position down on a crowd. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Three animal rights activists have been banned from SeaWorld San Diego following a demonstration at an orca show this year.A San Diego Superior Court order issued Thursday banned three protestors affiliated with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) from entering SeaWorld San Diego and Aquatica San Diego, SeaWorld said in a statement.Included in that ban were Ricky Rodriguez, Lyanne Fernandez, and Lisa Lange, PETA's senior vice president of communications.
