ATMORE, Ala. (AP) — A man convicted in the 2004 shooting deaths of three police officers in which another man pulled the trigger was executed in Alabama on Thursday. Authorities said 43-year-old Nathaniel Woods was pronounced dead at 9:01 p.m. CST after a lethal injection at the state prison in Atmore. This inmate’s execution came shortly after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected his 11th-hour appeals.Woods was convicted of capital murder in the deaths of the Birmingham officers. Though evidence showed his convicted co-defendant did the shooting, prosecutors said Woods was an accomplice and deserved to die for the killings.Supporters including Martin Luther King III argued that executing Woods was unjust. No execution date has been set for Woods' convicted co-defendant, Kerry Spencer. 802

Twenty-four-year-old Brian Michael Rini, of Medina, will be on probation for a year at the end of his sentence, which includes time served dating to last April. Rini last year pleaded not guilty to identity theft and lying to FBI agents about being Timmothy Pitzen, who disappeared in 2011. As President Donald Trump moves forward with plans to build additional physical barriers along the southern border, his administration will have to contend with a slew of lawsuits challenging the national emergency declaration allowing him, in part, to do so.So far, at least four lawsuits have been filed challenging the declaration. The argument at the core of each lawsuit is similar: Trump exceeded his authority and circumvented Congress in an attempt to achieve his signature campaign promise for an emergency that, plaintiffs argue, doesn't exist. Here's a rundown of the lawsuits:State of California et al. vs. Trump et al. Plaintiffs: 16 states, led by California Attorney General Xavier Becerra. The lawsuit seeks a preliminary injunction to halt the President's declaration. The complaint accuses Trump of carrying out an "unconstitutional and unlawful scheme," and describes how states "stand to lose millions in federal funding" and could "cause damage to their economies."The complaint includes Trump's remark that he didn't need to declare the emergency.Attorneys general from Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon and Virginia joined California in the lawsuit. All states, except Maryland, are led by Democratic governors.Location: Northern District of California.Judge: Elizabeth D. Laporte, Clinton appointee.Status: Filed.Center for Biological Diversity et al. vs. Trump et al. Plaintiffs: The Center for Biological Diversity, Defenders of Wildlife and Animal Legal Defense Fund. The 1612

As health officials scrutinize marijuana vaping, it’s increasingly on law enforcement’s radar, too. From New York City to Nebraska farm country to California, authorities have seized at least 510,000 marijuana vape cartridges and arrested more than 120 people in the past two years, according to an Associated Press tally derived from interviews, court records, news accounts and official releases.A Wisconsin mother, her two adult sons and five other people were charged this fall in what investigators describe as a black-market 542

Artificially-generated faces of people who don't exist are being used to front fake Facebook accounts in an attempt to trick users and game the company's systems, the social media network said Friday. Experts who reviewed the accounts say it is the first time they have seen fake images like this being used at scale as part of a single social media campaign. The accounts, which were removed by Facebook on Friday, were part of a network that generally posted in support of President Trump and against the Chinese government, experts who reviewed the accounts said. Many of the accounts promoted links to a Facebook page and website called "The BL." Facebook said the accounts were tied to the US-based Epoch Media Group, which owns The Epoch Times newspaper, a paper tied to the Falun Gong movement that is similarly pro-Trump.The publisher of the Epoch Times denied that Epoch and The BL were linked in emails to the fact-checking organization 957
