BEIJING, July 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese spent less in June amid surging commodities prices and floods in many of the country's southern provinces, according to the latest reading of an index that gauges consumer confidence on Friday.The Bankcard Consumer Confidence Index (BCCI), compiled by the Xinhua News Agency and the national bank card association China UnionPay, slid to 86.30 in June, down 0.09 points from May.Compared with the same period last year, the June BCCI figure was 0.24 points higher. The index hit a record high of 86.89 in March.The reading in June indicated Chinese bank card spending was affected by surging commodities prices and the floods in southern China.Consumers also turned more conservative in spending due to sluggish performances of domestic stock markets and property markets in June.China's month-on-month economic growth rate is likely to have slowed in June given signs that electricity demand declined remarkably that month and the Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for China's manufacturing sector dipped 1.8 percentage points for two months in a run to 52.1 percent in June.Xinhua and UnionPay jointly started compiling the BCCI index in April 2009 based on bank card transaction data and analysis of structural changes in urban consumption. 

TAIPEI, June 16 (Xinhua) -- China's eastern Zhejiang Province and Taiwan have agreed to deepen cooperation in agriculture, tourism, finance and other sectors, according to sources with a Zhejiang delegation which concluded its eight-day visit to the island on Wednesday.The sources said that the delegation, led by Zhejiang governor Lu Zushan, purchased 31 million yuan (4.5 million U.S. dollars) worth fruits and tea products from local farmers in Kaohsiung and Nantou.Zhejiang provincial government also pledged to help Taiwan farmers to sell their agricultural products in Hangzhou, Ningbo, Yiwu and other cities in the province and offer them preferential treatment in participating farm produce exhibitions.Zhejiang Province plans to increase its imports from Taiwan to about 10 billion U.S. dollars by the end of this year, from last year's 7.7 billion U.S. dollars.After the first six Zhejiang companies which have been permitted to conduct investment in Taiwan, Zhejiang government will promote more companies to invest in the island.Commercial banks in Zhejiang and Taiwan have also achieved cooperation agreement on financial service, insurance, futures trading and other services for small and medium-sized companies on both sides.Zhejiang is where many Taiwan people come from.The province is also a magnet for Taiwanese investment. HONG KONG, July 9 (Xinhua) -- A moderate earthquake measuring 5. 2 on the Richter scale struck the east coast of Taiwan on Friday, the U.S. Geological Survay (USGS) said.The quake hit at 3:43 a.m. local time (1943 GMT Thursday), at about 90 km southeast of Taipei at a depth of 21 km, according to the USGS.

XI' AN, July 16(Xinhua) -- German Chancellor Angela Merkel arrived in Xi'an, capital of northwest China' Shaanxi Province, Friday night to continue her China visit.During Merkel'stay in Xi'an, she'll attend a forum with Chinese and German business leaders and meet with provincial leaders.The visit will also take her to some historic sites, including the Terra-cotta Warriors, the Great Mosque at Huajue Lane as well as a local motor company.Merkel is on her fourth China visit since taking office. She flew to Xi'an from Beijing after finishing meetings with Chinese President Hu Jintao, Premier Wen Jiabao and vice President Xi Jinping on Friday.
