At X3 Sports, trainers have a goal of bringing out the warrior within their students by building up their cardiovascular endurance and their self-confidence.After being shut down because of COVID-19 concerns, this mixed martial arts gym in Atlanta is reopening and seeing a major increase in enrollment.“Since a lot of things have been going on in our community, it has increased at least 50% than what it was,” kickboxing coach Rica Grandison said.Grandison says more people are taking these self-defense classes and citing concerns ranging from the pandemic to the protests. She added that these students enrolling represent all races, genders and sexual orientations:“I am part of the LGBTQ community,” Grandison said.“I’ve been called the 'N' word just waiting for a bus. I’ve been called the 'D' word just hanging out with my partner, my significant other at the time,” she said. “So, I have been there.”Now the X3 coaches are sharing their championship credentials with gym members like Shannon Dunlap, who joined this gym to get stronger physically and emotionally.“I am a lot more comfortable in my body; I’m a lot more self-assured,” she said. “I don’t get nervous walking down the street.”The coaches at X3 say the more someone trains, the more muscle memory they will develop. Which means if they ever become a victim of an act of violence, it’s easier to escape that situation without things getting even more physical.“If somebody’s charging you just, just give them a push kick," Grandison said. “Push them away, knock them down, run away.”While Grandison says the best fight is a fight that never happens, she also believes it best for people to have the physical skills to defend themselves. 1714

As our country works to rebound, we're helping you manage the pressure as the pandemic is shifting caregiving responsibilities.More millennials are taking on this responsibility now. They're becoming a greater percentage of what's known as the "sandwich generation." Those are people who are caring for both their own kids and their aging parents.New numbers from insurance company New York Life show a third of millennials are doing this now.“We're not replacing the typical 49-year-old woman who's the family caregiver. She's still doing it, but the need is so great that more and more young people are called into the role as well and that's going to continue well after the COVID pandemic,” said John Schall, CEO of the Caregiver Action Network.Nearly half of the so-called "sandwich generation" expect to be a caregiver in some capacity for six or more years. The added financial strain is one concern. Schall says out of pocket expenses can be about a thousand dollars a month.More than half of these caregivers say they're spending more than usual per month to care for others as a result of the pandemic. That means they're contributing less to their savings and their retirement. There's also the concern about the mental toll.“With millennial generation caregivers, you may not be thinking about depression, you know, at that age, but the fact is the sheer stress of the role of being a family caregiver increases that risk of depression twice as often,” said Schall. If you are feeling overwhelmed, the caregiver help desk from the Caregiver Action Network can be one place to turn. You can call them free of charge at 855-227-3640. 1648

ATLANTA — The funeral for the late civil rights icon and congressman John Lewis will be held Thursday at Atlanta’s historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, which the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. once led. Lewis’ family announced that the funeral will be private, but the public is invited to pay tribute over the coming days during a series of celebrations of Lewis’ life beginning Saturday in his hometown of Troy, Alabama. Ceremonies will also be held in Selma, Alabama, and his body will lie in state at the Alabama State Capitol in Montgomery, the Georgia State Capitol in Atlanta and the U.S. Capitol in Washington.Lewis, 80, died Friday after a six-month battle with pancreatic cancer. He represented Georgia as a Congressman for more than 30 years, winning 17 elections. He also fought for Civil Rights for Black people in the 1960s, originally gaining notoriety as one of the 13 original "Freedom Riders." 914

At a rally on Sunday, President Donald Trump said that he might fire Dr. Anthony Fauci, his administration's top infectious disease expert, shortly after Tuesday's election. At a rally in Opa-Locka, Florida on Sunday, supporters broke into a "Fire Fauci!" chant as Trump discussed the COVID-19 pandemic."Don't tell anyone, but let me wait 'til a little bit after the election," Trump said. The comments marked the first time that Trump has publicly indicated that he may fire Fauci, who has been the head of the National Institute for Allergies and Infectious Diseases since 1984.Fauci, a member of the White House's corornavirus task force, has consistently been the most plain-spoken Trump administration official when speaking about the challenges the country faces amid the pandemic.Trump has publicly criticized Fauci throughout the pandemic. In October, with COVID-19 cases on the rise, Trump tweeted an attack on Fauci. Days later, during a campaign call, Trump called Fauci a "disaster" and said he and other health experts were "idiots."Polling has shown that Americans consistently believe that they trust Fauci more than Trump when it comes to handling COVID-19.In the past, Fauci has implied that the White House has limited the number of media appearances he can make, and has also said an ad by the Trump campaign took him out of context. 1358
