If you receive a call from an unfamiliar number informing you that you've missed jury duty and could be sent to jail if you don't pay a fine, be wary. The call could be a hoax.The scam has claimed a number of victims in the Baltimore area.At least one caller identified himself as a Lieutenant Steven Harris with the Baltimore County Sheriff's office. “They claimed that I had failed to show up, obey a summons in a criminal case, and that the judge had issued a bench warrant for my arrest. And they wanted me to come in right away and straighten it out or they would have to come get me,” said Professor Rena Steinzor who teaches at the University of Maryland Carey Law School.The caller gave the address of the Towson courthouse and instructed her to meet him there with money in hand.“He wanted ,868 in fines for my failure to appear and said I would get the money right back,” said Steinzor.When she explained she couldn't get down to her bank in Capitol Hill and back before the courthouse closed, he told her to purchase a MoneyPak from a CVS or office supply store. The form of payment was a red flag that alerted Steinzor to the fraud.“I think it's stupid to target somebody who's familiar with the criminal justice system and knows that you don't go to CVS and put money on a card if you have to pay a fine in court,” Steinzor said.A co-worker then called the Sheriff's Office who told her it was a trick.Steinzor didn't pay but there are many potential victims. The scheme stretches into areas around the state.Harford, Howard, Cecil, and Frederick counties have all reported similar scams recently. In Frederick County the caller gave the name of a police officer who is actively on the force. They convinced a victim to stay on the phone. The scammer didn't have an accent, they provided real addresses, and they threatened the victim with arrest.“I think the threat that they're going to come and get you is very disconcerting. I mean, I will tell you, I made it all the way to my car,” said Steinzor.The Baltimore County Sheriff said the fraudsster was after the code on the MoneyPak. He would've asked for the code and never appeared at the courthouse.They also said the person in question may be from another country. When police went to investigate, the number Steinzor provided was disconnected.Steinzor wanted to share her story because the scam can be very believable. When she initially called the number, the voicemail made it seem like it was the Sheriff's Office. They also knew where she worked.If you get one of these calls and you're not sure, police advise you to hang up and call the agency's official number on their website to verify.You could be fined or face jail time for failing to appear for jury service, however, courts do not call people to notify them about a bench warrant, nor do they instruct them to bring a “bond voucher” with them to the court.For more information on the scam, click here.  2992

Imagine applying for the top colleges in the United States hoping to get accepted to at least one.Well, that was the least of Mekhi Johnson's worries when applying for colleges this year. The Baltimore senior said that at six years old he heard a story on the radio about a student who was accepted to all of the Ivy League schools and knew that was his goal."I'm going to do that one day," said Johnson.And on 'Ivy Decision Day' he learned that he finally made it a reality. Johnson, who attends the Gilman School in Batlimore, serves as the President of the Diversity Council, a member of the school's acapella group, school band, and an avid volunteer, all while being a National Merit Scholarship Program Commended Student with a 98.1 average.More than 280,000 applicants applied to Ivy League schools last year. House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy plans to introduce legislation this week that will fully fund President Donald Trump's proposed wall along the U.S.-Mexico border with a whopping .4 billion price tag, a spokesperson for the California Republican told CNN on Tuesday.The bill is still in the drafting process but is expected to be released within the next few days in the pro-forma session this week. The House remains in recess until mid-November, after the midterm elections, so the body would not consider the legislation for another month or so. Even with a Republican-controlled Capitol Hill and White House, any proposal to fully fund Trump's signature campaign pledge of a border wall would have a difficult pathway to passing both chambers of Congress, given the threshold for such legislation and the narrow margin of control in the Senate.The legislation comes as McCarthy is headed to the U.S.-Mexico border on Wednesday for a tour and briefing by the Department of Homeland Security and as the California congressman continues to push to succeed Speaker Paul Ryan when the Wisconsin Republican departs in January.Mccarthy is not the only House Republican to express interest in leading the caucus. Majority Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana and House Freedom Caucus co-founder Jim Jordan of Ohio have talked about pursuing the top House GOP spot, and both are traditionally affiliated with the more conservative side of the caucus members. (KGTV) - An altercation over a mask turned ugly at an Imperial Beach taco shop on Thursday night.Just before 10 p.m. at Don Pancho's Taco Shop, surveillance video shows a customer at the walk-up order window. He's using his shirt and sleeve to cover his face."Our cashier says he has to wear a proper face mask. The customer gets upset. The cashier offers a face mask that we have on hand for those who don't have masks. He thinks about it and gets upset," said manager Myra Espinoza.In the video, the man waves his hand, apparently waving off the mask offer, before he begins walking away. Moments later, there is a loud sound."He heard something hit the window, and the window falling and shattering down," said Espinoza.The video revealed the cause: the man took his skateboard and thrust into one of the restaurant's windows."It hurts. That's like my house. It's so disrespectful. I wouldn't go to his house and break his window," said Espinoza.Espinoza says it's not the first time someone has gotten upset over the mask policy."We have sliding windows. One gentleman grabbed the sliding windows so hard, it bounced back," said Espinoza.Still, those types of incidents are rare. Thursday's vandalism is the first time things have turned destructive."It's uncalled for and unnecessary. We're all trying to what's best and keep people safe," said Espinoza.The vandalism totaled about 0 dollars in damage.
