SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The manager of a Cricket Wireless store in Pacific Beach is hoping the public can help identify two men involved in tagging the back of the store. Blake Beadle, the store manager, said newly installed cameras captured two men approach the store on Garnett Avenue on Monday night at around 9:30 p.m.One of the men approached the back of the store and appeared to spray paint something on the back wall. Meanwhile, the other man stood watch.Beadle said he had just painted over the spot a week and a half ago, when vandals had hit the same spot. “It seems like as soon as we paint over it, within a few weeks it gets tagged again in a similar fashion,” said Beadle. He reported the latest incident to police. He said he hopes the video can help identify the suspects. 792
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Supporters of labor unions rallied across the country on Saturday ahead of a Supreme Court case that could effect how unions collect agency fees. One was held in downtown San Diego outside the California Democratic Convention, where hundreds of union supporters gathered for the “Working People’s Day of Action” event. Demonstrators were supporting the union AFSCME, which is engaged in a court battle that has made its way to the Supreme Court. In Janus v. AFSCME, the Supreme Court will decide whether it is legal for unions, which often donate to political causes, to compel members to agency fees. Those fees are collected by unions from employees who have opted not to join the union but still benefit from collective bargaining. The plaintiff, Mark Janus, has argued it violates his first amendment rights to pay fees to an organization that he disagrees with politically. A ruling in his favor could have wide-reaching effects on public sector labor unions around the country, argues famed labor organizer, Dolores Huerta. “That is going to be very devastating to our unions here in California,” said Huerta, if the court sides with Janus. 1213

From Rancho Penasquitos to downtown, people say they are finding webs just about everywhere including hiking trailsOne person wrote on a local Reddit thread they stopped hiking because there were so many webs.Chris Conlan works with San Diego County Vector Control and says there's nothing on usual with what folks are seeing.“They hatch out in the spring and they’re small and make very small webs,” said Conlan. "But as they begin to grow over the course of the summer and beginning of fall where we are right now, they’re much larger they tend to spin bigger webs and those are they kind of webs people walk into freak out and do the spider dance."Conlan says the webs people are bumping into on trails are likely orb weavers’. They are poisonous, but their venom is not toxic to humans like other spiders.“It’s really just the black and the brown widow that people need to worry about and they tend to spin more out of the way webs in corners and dark places," said Conlan. "They’re not the type of web you’re just going to go walking through."Conlan’s advice for folks’ encountering spider’s homes is as good anyone’s.“Carry a stick in front of you,” said Conlan with a laugh. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Temperatures are forecasted to climb in Southern California and surrounding areas through the next week and as this heat persists, there are other factors in play as well. Moisture entering the region will increase humidity, and humidity overnight will lead to overnight lows staying warmer, which means an extended period of heat with less overnight relief can be expected.This is a trend that is becoming more and more common. Climate researchers from Scripps Institution of Oceanography studied the history of these warmer, prolonged and humid stretches in the San Diego area, and found that periods similar to this are on the rise.“What we found is that heatwaves in Southern California, and I would say California more broadly, have been increasing over time in their frequency and tendency,” said researcher Dan Cayan.The lack of overnight cooling means no break from the heat at night, so the long stretch of days of increased temperatures combined with a lack of overnight relief could lead to dangerous conditions.“It’s a lot easier to contend with a heatwave that lasts a day or two than one that lasts four days,” said Cayan.Cayan said this is part of a larger picture of climate change impact, and this trend will likely continue in the years to come.Humidity can make temperatures feel worse. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The brand new Continental Apartment complex in Little Italy isn't like its upscale neighbors.It's made up of studios, some smaller than 400 square feet, and offers very little parking. That's why the starting rent is "just" ,550 a month, about 35 percent below market for the trendy area. "The rent is high in San Diego because of simple math - supply and demand," said Jonathan Segal, the architect who designed The Continental.Segal says costly approval delays and fees are contributing to that very supply crunch. The Continental, no exception, was delayed for two years. Segal says he paid almost million in fees for the building. But he's specifically perplexed by how the city charges what are called Developer Impact Fees. The money goes to uses like parks, fire, library and transportation.The city charges as much as ,000 per unit, depending on location, not size. That's why the city fee on developers could be disproportionately impacting rent prices for smaller units. In other words, if a developer takes a building and creates 40 apartments, that developer would have to pay that fee 40 times. Alternatively, if that same developers takes that same building and does just one large unit, that developer only pays the fee once. Now, there's a growing push at City Hall to change how the city calculates the impact fee. This week, a city council committee held a preliminary discussion on the fee's future. One option, endorsed by City Councilman Scott Sherman, is to do it by square foot. That way, building more, smaller units won't increase costs on developers - and ultimately renters or buyers. "If you were to do it by a square foot process, then a developer would come in and say, 'you know what? I can build two units at 0,000, instead of one at 0,000,'" Sherman said.
