A major warning from scientists around the world: Do not depend on antibodies for permanent immunity from COVID-19. This comes on the heels of several studies showing that antibodies only last in our bodies for about two to three months.“That’s normal,” said Dr. Michael Teng, a professor at the University of South Florida's College of Internal Medicine and a researcher.According to Dr. Teng, our immune system creates antibodies when a virus enters our bodies. Their main purpose is to stop the virus from getting into our cells. Having few or no antibodies isn’t necessarily a bad thing, and it doesn’t mean you’ll be reinfected with the virus right away.“Antibodies are supposed to go down after a while,” Dr. Teng said. “You’re not supposed to have high elevated levels of antibodies for weeks on end. It’s not normal.”Scientists were hoping the antibodies produced from COVID-19 would stick around as long as antibodies produced from other forms of coronavirus, like SARS. New transportation options are showing up in cities across the country, including shareable bikes, electric scooters, and now mopeds are even starting to compete for street space.However, with all these new electronic transportation options there are safety concerns. Starting this weekend, 400 electric mopeds will be hitting the streets of Washington, D.C. One thousand of the mopeds are already available for rent in New York City. The company behind these electric mopeds, Revel, plans to expand to other cities. “The benefit is really simple. The way you have to think about it: this is almost always at least half the cost of Uber and Lyft and twice as much fun,” says Paul Suhey with Revel. They're part of a growing number of transportation options people can rent by using their cell phone app. Most major cities already have electric scooters and bicycles. Last year in the U.S., people took 84 million trips on bikes and scooters, according to National Association of City Transportation officials. However, the influx of rides is causing safety concerns, with some concerned the vehicles will add to the congestion on the road. “If you're having to be aware of either a cyclist, a scooter rider, now a moped rider, who may go in between cars, you have to be careful and watch out for each other as you're using these different modes of operations,” says Jeanette Tejeda de Gomez with AAA. She says research shows moped riders are more likely to be injured or die than those walking, biking or driving a car. However, Revel says helmets are included with each rental, riders have to be at least 21, have a driver's license and they screen the rider's driving record. “From our first couple months operating in New York, in over 300,000 rides, 99.99 percent have happened without incident, and we understand that safety record doesn't happen by accident,” Suhey says. On one of the islands of the Florida Keys, there’s a small animal that’s causing a big stir. “You know, I love the Key Deer, they’re just, they’re warm and fuzzy,” said Cathy Rhoades, who runs the Florida Keys Wildlife Society. “We do consider them a national treasure,” said Kristie Killam with US Fish and Wildlife. The Key Deer. It’s a little known species of deer that’s native to the island chain. The animal is very small compared to its cousins on the mainland. “The small ones, can get pretty – 2 to 4 pounds at birth," explained Killam. "Some of the tinier ones that look almost like a house cat. Some of the itty bitty fawns." For more than 50 years, the baby Bambi has been a member of the endangered species act. The population declined in the 40s and 50s by hunting. “To the point there was only about 25 to 50 Key Deer left in the wild were the estimates,” said Killam. But they could be removed from the endangered species list. They are recommended on the 3-year work plan for US Fish and Wildlife for de-listing due to recovery. They’re just one of 55 species included in the report. But the tiny animal is incredibly important to Vivian Beck. "They’re just so unique that they literally live among us, or I should say we live among them, and they’re adapting,” said Beck. She’s the president of the Key Deer Protection Alliance, an organization dedicated to keeping the Key Deer protected. Beck thinks removing the animal from the list is premature. US Fish and Wildlife estimates there are between 600 and 800 deer on the island. She says she’s been told as many as 1,000 deer. “Texas A&M said there were 573, so our numbers didn’t match up at all,” said Beck. While the Department of Fish and Wildlife did give us an interview to discuss the deer’s history and biology, they said they can’t comment on an ongoing species assessment. For those that live in the Florida Keys, they just want the assessment to reflect the truth. “That’s the process I would like to see happen, just get more information, more information and refine your thinking based on the information that you have,” said Rhoades.“The Key Deer are one storm and one disease away from total extinction,” said Beck.  2230

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — Millions of drivers received refunds on their car insurance after the pandemic forced a national shutdown. But the I-Team found out at least one major insurance carrier is asking to raise rates for drivers across Florida.Pinellas County resident Robert Stickler and his wife started working from home after the pandemic shut down Florida in March. “My family hasn't been driving, the cars have been sitting," Stickler said.Their insurance carrier Geico and many other large auto insurers in the nation refunded drivers. The Sticklers were refunded 15 to 20 percent of premium costs after the pandemic delivered a drastic dip in accidents and claims. That credit was reflected on the Stickler family bill.Robert Stickler welcomed the refund but said they suffered sticker shock when Geico socked them with a 0 rate hike to their 6-month policy in June. The increase was approved by the state. “It was going to be over 4 a month for 3 older vehicles,” said Stickler.In a letter from Geico:"There are many factors that affect your insurance premium such as age, driving history, location and the increasing cost of vehicle repairs." But this driver says that explanation does not add up. “There had been no changes what-so-ever,” said Stickler.We reached out to Geico and have yet to hear back. The I-Team checked state records and found Geico petitioned the Florida Office of Insurance regulation between March and August for a separate rate hike of nearly 7 percent after the pandemic hit.Doug Heller is with the Consumer Federation of America, a watchdog group that called on Geico this past May to give back some of its profits the CFA claims the company raked in during the pandemic as drivers stayed off the road. “We are paying premiums as if the pandemic never happened,” said Heller.The I-Team reviewed second-quarter profit earnings for some of the nation’s largest insurance companies. We looked at overall profits which include their auto insurance and found Allstate, Progressive and Geico business shot up by hundreds of millions of dollars for the second quarter of this year compared to the second quarter of 2019.Geico's parent company reported to investors its 2020 overall insurance profits were, ”...largely attributable to unusually high earnings from Geico due to lower claims frequencies. These results are likely to be temporary…"Former Florida Deputy Insurance Commissioner Lisa Miller says there’s a state law that regulates how much insurance can profit. “We have very strict set of factors of what these insurance companies can profit," Miller said. No one is alleging that Geico or any other insurance company made an excessive profit. However, Miller says if state regulators find that any auto carrier made an excessive profit, customers could be refunded under a Florida law meant to protect consumers.The I-Team requested an interview with Florida's Insurance Commissioner David Altmaier. His spokesperson declined our request but said in a statement."OIR thoroughly reviews all filed auto insurance rates filings to ensure they comply with all applicable laws and are not excessive, inadequate, or unfairly discriminatory. "In its latest earnings report. Allstate credited its auto policy profits to "....Higher premiums earned and lower loss costs from reduced miles driven.”We asked the company if it planned to refund more money to customers, but have yet to hear back.
