Once the boat made it to shore, 14 people began running from Border Patrol agents. Thirteen people were captured, but one got away. San Diego (KGTV)- For many people who live on a fixed income buying groceries may be a challenge. But now, 95,000 San Diegans receiving Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, will be able to apply for the CalFresh program (food stamps). “Individuals receiving SSI receives no more than 0 a month,” says Amanda Schultz Brocheo, with the San Diego Hunger Coalition. “For the majority, of SSI recipients, this all the money they have.”In San Diego, 1 in 11 older adults don’t have enough food to eat. “In some cases, we’ve heard of SSI recipients that will pull out a calendar and circle the days they are going to choose not to eat.”The San Diego Hunger Coalition says they are happy about the expansion but say the amount per day the is less than a day. “We determined that here in San Diego County the average CalFresh allotment is .07 a day.” This week also marks CalFresh Challenge Week. The organization encourages San Diegans to try living off a day for food. It’s meant to bring awareness to the food insecurities around the county. “We know that the CalFresh program is our strongest tool to for fighting hunger and also recognize that the current allotment is fairly small,” says Brocheo. “It makes it fairly difficult for people to live on that amount. With that said that a day is a more than they would have received otherwise.”To apply for the CalFresh program: - apply online- Call 2-1-1 - attend an upcoming CalFresh program event 1466

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - A couple in San Diego are spending the holiday telling everyone they know to register as an organ donor."People don't like to talk about their death, but rather than bury these organs or burn them up, you can save lives," says Nancy Marlin, who is recovering from a kidney transplant.Marlin had a genetic kidney disease and would have needed dialysis if not for the donation. Her new kidney came from a co-worker."I was so fortunate," says says. "Someone gave me the most amazing gift."It's a gift her family knows well. Marlin's husband, Fred Kolkhorst, had a heart transplant just 18 months ago after being diagnoses with heart failure."It changes you immensely in ways that are difficult to describe," he says.Kolkhorst and Marlin are rare in that they're a married couple who have both received donated organs. Sharp Memorial Hospital Transplant Coordinator Tammy Wright says she can't think of any couples in her 25 years in the field.Wright says the holidays are the perfect time for families to talk about their wishes in regards to organ donations."It's a time of giving," she says. "The simple thing is to tell your family what your wishes are. If they know what your wishes are, they usually will follow that if something does happen."Wright also says to consider being a living donor for organs like kidneys, which have an 8-12 year wait list for donors."The simple act of saying 'yes' can make somebody live," she says.More information on organ donation can be found here. 1520

od safety and the coronavirus diseaseOn Monday, the FDA approved Hologic's clinical trials for Emergency Use Authorization. Since then, they have shipped hundreds of thousands of their test kits to their clients, including local hospitals, laboratories, public health systems, and the Department of Defence, for testing military personnel.“What you’ll see is something like this," Thornal held a small vile. "This is just a small vile that has a nasal swab that looks like a Q-tip. And that will be put up your nose, and they’ll put it into a vile this and send it off to the lab. Their machines can test up to 1,000 samples in a day, and results come out in about three hours. RELATED: UC San Diego, manufacturers increase COVID-19 testing capacityUnlike early manual-style tests, Thornal said Hologic's automated kits take out the possibility of human error. Plus, everything from research and development to production happens here. “The test was invented by scientists that live here right here in San Diego," Thornal. "And right now, our operations team right here off of Mira Mesa Boulevard, that’s where all of this manufacturing is occurring, is shipping out from here to the globe.”Hologic said their goal is to send out 600,000 test kits per month, worldwide by April. 2416

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Gov. Gavin Newsom declared an emergency Tuesday over wildfires burning throughout California as the state's power grid operator pleaded for continued conservation to avoid rolling blackouts. The grid operator praised residents and businesses for astonishing conservation efforts that kept the power on Monday night. The state is in a days-long heatwave that has stressed the electrical system and resulted in rolling blackouts over two nights last weekend. Outages, excessive heat, wildfire and the pandemic have people on edge. Evacuations were in effect or growing in several Northern California communities because of growing fires. Newsom demanded an investigation into two smaller weekend blackouts. 733
