Companies can stop collecting employees’ payroll taxes starting Tuesday, September 1, after an executive order in early August gave workers a tax holiday. The deferral of payroll taxes applies to employees making less than 4,000 a year. Employees are taxed 6.2 percent that goes toward the Social Security Trust Fund and another 1.45 percent for Medicare. It’s a deferral because the payroll taxes are still due to the IRS by April 30, 2021, which they made clear in new guidance released last week with the US Treasury Department. What this means to employees: It depends on your employer. Starting September 1, employers can stop withholding taxes, but many business leaders have said they will not since the taxes will eventually be due. The decision is up to each company and is not required. If a company stops withholding payroll taxes, employees will have more money in their paychecks through the end of the year. Then on January 1, companies will need to withhold more from paychecks to collect all that is owed in April 2021.For employees making ,000 a year, the elimination of Social Security taxes would result in an extra per paycheck every two weeks. Assuming the employee has eight paychecks left in 2020, that would result in 2 in taxes deferred in 2020, which would be repaid in 2021. For employees making ,000 per year, those figures would be doubled. If an employee leaves their job before all of the appropriate taxes are collected, the guidance only states that companies can "make arrangements to otherwise collect the total applicable taxes from the employee."President Trump has stated he would “terminate” the tax if he was elected in November. However, the president does not have the ability to do that on his own. Abolishing payroll taxes requires an act of Congress. 1814

CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Warmer water temperatures are bringing out the stingray encounters in San Diego. Thursday afternoon, 12 more people were stung just days after a similar incident involving 10 to 15 people Tuesday. “I’m not used to the beach I come from Arizona so like this is actually happening,” said Angelo La Rosa, who is visiting from Arizona. “It felt like something was digging into my skin,” said 13-year-old Phoenix Stofa, who was one of at least a dozen stung Thursday. RELATED: 10 to 15 people stung by stingrays in Coronado“Yeah, yeah they don’t want to get stepped on and that’s their only defense mechanism and they have a barb,” said Sgt. Damon Bassett, a lifeguard in Coronado. Basset said he feels for those who get stung. “Anytime you get some nice weather and some warm water people don’t know to shuffle their feet. Then they can come in contact and get stung.”“Don’t walk on the water like you would on land,” Bassett added. A painful lesson for some, but still a day at the beach. “I just thought of the shark movies but it wasn’t a shark alert it was just a stingray. If it was a shark alert, I would have been more,” La Rosa said. If you do happen to get stung, lifeguards say you should soak the affected area in hot water to deactivate the venom. 1291

CUPERTINO, Calif. – Apple announced Tuesday that it has committed to becoming 100% carbon neutral across its entire business by 2030.The tech company says its corporate operations are already carbon neutral, but now it plans for its supply chain and product life cycle to be too.The new commitment means that by 2030, every Apple device sold will have net zero climate impact, the company said.Apple also released a report Tuesday, detailing its plans to reduce its emissions by 75% by 2030 while developing innovative carbon removal solutions for the remaining 25% of its comprehensive footprint.Apple released a “Climate Roadmap” it will follow as it seeks to lower emissions. Some key points of the plan include increasing the use of low carbon and recycled materials in its products, lowering energy use at its facilities, relying solely on renewable energy, tackling emissions through technological improvements, and investing in forests and other nature-based solutions to remove carbon from the atmosphere. To support its efforts, Apple says it’s establishing an “Impact Accelerator,” which will focus on investing in minority-owned businesses that drive positive outcomes in its supply chain and in communities that are disproportionately affected by environmental hazards.“Businesses have a profound opportunity to help build a more sustainable future, one born of our common concern for the planet we share,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “The innovations powering our environmental journey are not only good for the planet — they’ve helped us make our products more energy efficient and bring new sources of clean energy online around the world. Climate action can be the foundation for a new era of innovative potential, job creation, and durable economic growth. With our commitment to carbon neutrality, we hope to be a ripple in the pond that creates a much larger change.”Click here to learn more about Apple’s plan. 1936

CORONADO, Calif. -- A distracted school bus driver is being blamed for a chain-reaction crash that injured students on their way home.According to the CHP, just before 2 p.m. Wednesday, a bus carrying about 50 Coronado Middle School students rear-ended a truck that was stopped at a light, which hit another truck.Afterwards, Coronado's police chief and other officers handed out water because the bus was stuffy. There were no serious injuries, but six or seven students did complain of some pain.  It's unclear how many were taken to the hospital. The CHP says the preliminary cause is unsafe speed. The driver - in his sixties - claims he was distracted by something going on with the students.10News reached out to the school district to find out if the driver will face a suspension, but have yet to hear back. 826
