SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Details are beginning to emerge about the woman who was shot and killed inside a Church’s Chicken in the South Bay Wednesday night. Maribel Merino-Iba?ez, 28, was killed while working her shift at the Otay Mesa West restaurant. “I believe in God and I believe that one day justice will come his way and that won’t bring my daughter back, but I know that there will be justice for her,” said Emma Karla Merino, the victim’s mother. "I just want justice, because nobody can bring my sister back. Her body is gone, but she is here in my heart and she’s never going away,” said Gabriela Merino, the victim’s sister. Someone who knew Merino-Iba?ez told 10News she had worked at the Church’s Chicken for nine years and was a shift manager. A vigil is set to take place at the restaurant Friday at 6 p.m. Another victim was identified as Mario Rojas. He was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital where he underwent surgery and is now in stable condition. According to police, the suspect is a man in his 30s who got into an argument with employees after trying to use counterfeit money. Surveillance video showed the suspect sitting outside for about 50 minutes before walking back into the restaurant on the 3700 block of Del Sol Boulevard and opening fire at 5:27 p.m. 1603

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hundreds of veterans who bravely served our country reunited this week in San Diego.It was the first Midway Class Reunion, also known as the Three Sisters Reunion.Veterans who served on the USS Midway, USS Coral Sea, and USS Franklin D. Roosevelt were invited to attend. In addition to touring the ship veterans were able to look at commemorative books from their deployments. “They get to meet others, they get to swap sea stories as we say in the Navy, get to swap sea stories with their friends and anyone willing to listen!” said a USS Midway Museum volunteer. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hundreds of protesters gathered in Balboa Park Monday evening, the third day of protests in the San Diego region. A large group began coalescing near the San Diego Police Department headquarters near Broadway and 13th St in the afternoon. As night fell, the group marched up Park Boulevard past San Diego City College and into Balboa Park. Law enforcement officers followed closely. Freeway on-ramps and off-ramp were blocked by CHP officers in tactical gear along the route, preventing protesters from accessing the freeways. After marching through the park, the group stopped near El Prado and Sixth Ave. Many in the group laid down on their stomachs with their arms behind their backs, chanting “I can’t breathe,” in honor of George Floyd, the unarmed black man killed in police custody in Minnesota on May 25, 2020. Afterwards, they held a moment of silence for those killed at the hands of police. Many demonstrators dispersed after, though a group began forming again outside SDPD headquarters. At 10:25, SDPD tweeted that “bottles, fireworks and other objects” were being thrown at officers near their headquarters. Several minutes later, police declared the protest an unlawful assembly and began clearing the area, tweeting, “those who remain or return against this lawful order may be cited/arrested and risk exposure to chemical agents & less-lethal force applications.” As of 11 p.m. SDPD had announced they made one arrest for vandalism. 1481
